Smarter Planet is a corporate initiative of the information technology company IBM. The initiative asserts that information technology can be used to make the world's systems and industries more efficient and productive.
Origins
On November 2008, IBM’s CEO, Sam Palmisano, during a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, outlined a new agenda for building a Smarter Planet. The premise holds that the world's systems and industries are becoming more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent, and that leaders and citizens can take advantage of this state of affairs to improve these systems and industries.
Advertising Campaign[1]
IBM has created an advertising campaign to support the Smarter Planet initiative.
In 2008 and 2009, IBM ran a series of full-page advertisements in newspapers such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Each of these "op-ads" featured an essay about a system or industry which IBM claims can be made "smarter" through the application of technology.[2] Industries and systems covered in the campaign include:
- Energy
- Traffic
- Food
- Infrastructure
- Retail
- Intelligence
- Stimulus
- Banking
- Telecom
- Oil
- Health-care
- Cities
- Water
- Public Safety
- Buildings
- Work
- Rail
- Products
- Education
- Government
- Cloud Computing
xkcd Comics created for a Smarter Planet
In June 2009, the Smarter Planet blog team asked Randall Munroe the creator of xkcd to create a few comics for their blog.[3][4][5]
