Sura 3. - Imranova obitelj (Al-Imran)

CHAPTER 3 THE FAMILY OF IMRAN ĀL ʿIMRĀN ( آل عمران ) 200 verses • revealed at Medinan

»The surah that mentions that God has chosen The Family of Imran to inherit prophethood above the people of all the world (Imran was a common ancestor of Moses and Jesus). It takes its name from the expression “the House of ʿImrān” (āl-i ʿImrān) mentioned in . It begins by emphasizing that the Quran confirms the earlier scriptures and goes on to say later that the central tenet of faith is devotion to God ( ff.). The story of Zachariah, Mary, and Jesus is given in ff. and the fact that Jesus was unfathered, just as Adam was created without a father, is accentuated. Aspects of the battles of Badr (year 2/624) and Uḥud (year 3/625) are described, especially the latter, where most of the early Muslims disobeyed the Prophet Muḥammad and were defeated. The surah first introduce the tension that arose between the Muslims and certain of the Jews and Christians ( ff. and ff.), then closes by emphasizing the unity of faith and conduct between the Muslims and some of these People of the Book, explaining that these will have their reward from God ().«

The surah is also known as: The Family of Imraan, The House of Imran, The Imrans.

TRANSLATION It is He who has sent down to you the Book. Parts of it are definitive verses, which are the mother of the Book, while others are metaphorical.1 As for those in whose hearts is deviance, they pursue what is metaphorical in it, courting temptation and courting its interpretation. But no one knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly grounded in knowledge; they say, ‘We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord.’ And none takes admonition except those who possess intellect. TRANSLITERATION rabbanā lā tuzigh qulūbanā baʿda ʾidh hadaytanā wa-hab lanā min ladunka raḥmatan ʾinnaka ʾanta l-wahhābu

TRANSLATION As for the faithless, neither their wealth nor their children shall avail them anything against Allah; it is they who will be fuel for the Fire;

TRANSLITERATION ka-daʾbi ʾāli firʿawna wa-lladhīna min qablihim kadhdhabū bi-ʾāyātinā fa-ʾakhadhahumu llāhu bi-dhunūbihim wa-llāhu shadīdu l-ʿiqābi

TRANSLATION There was certainly a sign for you in the two hosts that met: one host fighting in the way of Allah and the other faithless, who saw them visibly twice as many.1 Allah strengthens with His help whomever He wishes. There is indeed a moral in that for those who have insight. Or ‘whom they [i.e. the faithful] saw visibly twice as many.’ 14 زُيِّنَ لِلنّاسِ حُبُّ الشَّهَواتِ مِنَ النِّساءِ وَالبَنينَ وَالقَناطيرِ المُقَنطَرَةِ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ وَالفِضَّةِ وَالخَيلِ المُسَوَّمَةِ وَالأَنعامِ وَالحَرثِ ۗ ذٰلِكَ مَتاعُ الحَياةِ الدُّنيا ۖ وَاللَّهُ عِندَهُ حُسنُ المَآبِ TRANSLITERATION zuyyina li-n-nāsi ḥubbu sh-shahawāti mina n-nisāʾi wa-l-banīna wa-l-qanāṭīri l-muqanṭarati mina dh-dhahabi wa-l-fiḍḍati wa-l-khayli l-musawwamati wa-l-ʾanʿāmi wa-l-ḥarthi dhālika matāʿu l-ḥayāti d-dunyā wa-llāhu ʿindahū ḥusnu l-maʾābi

TRANSLATION To mankind has been made to seem decorous the love of [worldly] desires, including women and children, accumulated piles of gold and silver, horses of mark, livestock, and farms. Those are the wares of the life of this world; but Allah—with Him is a good destination.

TRANSLATION Say, ‘Shall I inform you of something better than that? For those who are Godwary there will be gardens near their Lord, with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], and chaste mates, and Allah’s pleasure.’ And Allah sees best the servants.

TRANSLITERATION alladhīna yaqūlūna rabbanā ʾinnanā ʾāmannā fa-ghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa-qinā ʿadhāba n-nāri

TRANSLATION Those who say, ‘Our Lord! Indeed we have faith. So forgive us our sins, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.’

TRANSLITERATION aṣ-ṣābirīna wa-ṣ-ṣādiqīna wa-l-qānitīna wa-l-munfiqīna wa-l-mustaghfirīna bi-l-ʾasḥāri

TRANSLATION Patient and truthful, obedient and charitable, and pleading [Allah’s] forgiveness at dawns. TRANSLITERATION shahida llāhu ʾannahū lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa wa-l-malāʾikatu wa-ʾulū l-ʿilmi qāʾiman bi-l-qisṭi lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa l-ʿazīzu l-ḥakīmu

TRANSLATION Allah bears witness that there is no god except Him —and [so do] the angels and those who possess knowledge— maintainer of justice, there is no god but Him, the Almighty, the All-wise.

19 إِنَّ الدّينَ عِندَ اللَّهِ الإِسلامُ ۗ وَمَا اختَلَفَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ إِلّا مِن بَعدِ ما جاءَهُمُ العِلمُ بَغيًا بَينَهُم ۗ وَمَن يَكفُر بِآياتِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ سَريعُ الحِسابِ TRANSLITERATION ʾinna d-dīna ʿinda llāhi l-ʾislāmu wa-mā khtalafa lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba ʾillā min baʿdi mā jāʾahumu l-ʿilmu baghyan baynahum wa-man yakfur bi-ʾāyāti llāhi fa-ʾinna llāha sarīʿu l-ḥisābi

TRANSLATION Indeed, with Allah religion is Islām,1 and those who were given the Book did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. And whoever defies Allah’s signs [should know that] Allah is swift at reckoning. Or ‘religion is submission [to Allah].’ 20 فَإِن حاجّوكَ فَقُل أَسلَمتُ وَجهِيَ لِلَّهِ وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَنِ ۗ وَقُل لِلَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ وَالأُمِّيّينَ أَأَسلَمتُم ۚ فَإِن أَسلَموا فَقَدِ اهتَدَوا ۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّوا فَإِنَّما عَلَيكَ البَلاغُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ بَصيرٌ بِالعِبادِ TRANSLITERATION fa-ʾin ḥājjūka fa-qul ʾaslamtu wajhiya li-llāhi wa-mani ttabaʿani wa-qul li-lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba wa-l-ʾummiyyīna ʾa-ʾaslamtum fa-ʾin ʾaslamū fa-qadi htadaw wa-ʾin tawallaw fa-ʾinnamā ʿalayka l-balāghu wa-llāhu baṣīrun bi-l-ʿibādi

TRANSLATION So if they argue with you, say, ‘I have submitted my will to Allah, and [so has] he who follows me.’ And say to those who were given the Book and the uninstructed ones,1 ‘Do you submit?’ If they submit, they will certainly be guided; but if they turn away, then your duty is only to communicate; and Allah sees best the servants. That is, the Arabs, who unlike the Jews and the Christians did not possess any scripture and had not received any scriptural instruction.

TRANSLATION Those who defy Allah’s signs and kill the prophets unjustly,1 and kill those who call for justice from among the people, inform them of a painful punishment. That is, the Jews. Verses - relate to them. TRANSLITERATION ʾulāʾika lladhīna ḥabiṭat ʾaʿmāluhum fī d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati wa-mā lahum min nāṣirīna

TRANSLATION They are the ones whose works have failed in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers.

TRANSLATION Have you not regarded those who were given a share of the Book, who are summoned to the Book of Allah in order that it may judge between them, whereat a part of them refuse to comply and they are disregardful?

TRANSLITERATION dhālika bi-ʾannahum qālū lan tamassanā n-nāru ʾillā ʾayyāman maʿdūdātin wa-gharrahum fī dīnihim mā kānū yaftarūna

TRANSLATION But how will it be [with them] when We gather them on a day in which there is no doubt, and every soul shall be recompensed fully for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged?

26 قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ مالِكَ المُلكِ تُؤتِي المُلكَ مَن تَشاءُ وَتَنزِعُ المُلكَ مِمَّن تَشاءُ وَتُعِزُّ مَن تَشاءُ وَتُذِلُّ مَن تَشاءُ ۖ بِيَدِكَ الخَيرُ ۖ إِنَّكَ عَلىٰ كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ TRANSLITERATION quli llāhumma mālika l-mulki tuʾtī l-mulka man tashāʾu wa-tanziʿu l-mulka mimman tashāʾu wa-tuʿizzu man tashāʾu wa-tudhillu man tashāʾu bi-yadika l-khayru ʾinnaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

TRANSLATION Say, ‘O Allah, Master of all sovereignty! You give sovereignty to whomever You wish, and strip of sovereignty whomever You wish; You make mighty whomever You wish, and You abase whomever You wish; all good is in Your hand. Indeed You have power over all things.

27 تولِجُ اللَّيلَ فِي النَّهارِ وَتولِجُ النَّهارَ فِي اللَّيلِ ۖ وَتُخرِجُ الحَيَّ مِنَ المَيِّتِ وَتُخرِجُ المَيِّتَ مِنَ الحَيِّ ۖ وَتَرزُقُ مَن تَشاءُ بِغَيرِ حِسابٍ TRANSLITERATION tūliju l-layla fī n-nahāri wa-tūliju n-nahāra fī l-layli wa-tukhriju l-ḥayya mina l-mayyiti wa-tukhriju l-mayyita mina l-ḥayyi wa-tarzuqu man tashāʾu bi-ghayri ḥisābin

TRANSLATION You make the night pass into the day and You make the day pass into the night. You bring forth the living from the dead and You bring forth the dead from the living, and You provide for whomever You wish without any reckoning.’ 28 لا يَتَّخِذِ المُؤمِنونَ الكافِرينَ أَولِياءَ مِن دونِ المُؤمِنينَ ۖ وَمَن يَفعَل ذٰلِكَ فَلَيسَ مِنَ اللَّهِ في شَيءٍ إِلّا أَن تَتَّقوا مِنهُم تُقاةً ۗ وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ اللَّهُ نَفسَهُ ۗ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ المَصيرُ TRANSLITERATION lā yattakhidhi l-muʾminūna l-kāfirīna ʾawliyāʾa min dūni l-muʾminīna wa-man yafʿal dhālika fa-laysa mina llāhi fī shayʾin ʾillā ʾan tattaqū minhum tuqātan wa-yuḥadhdhirukumu llāhu nafsahū wa-ʾilā llāhi l-maṣīru

TRANSLATION The faithful should not take the faithless for allies instead of the faithful, and whoever does that Allah will have nothing to do with him, except when you are wary of them out of caution. Allah warns you to beware of [disobeying] Him, and toward Allah is the return.

TRANSLITERATION qul ʾin tukhfū mā fī ṣudūrikum ʾaw tubdūhu yaʿlamhu llāhu wa-yaʿlamu mā fī s-samāwāti wa-mā fī l-ʾarḍi wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

TRANSLATION When Allah said, ‘O Jesus, I shall take you[r soul],1 and I shall raise you up toward Myself, and I shall clear you of [the calumnies of] the faithless, and I shall set those who follow you above the faithless until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me will be your return, whereat I will judge between you concerning that about which you used to differ. Tawaffā means ‘to exact fully’ something, ‘to receive in full,’ ‘to take one’s full share,’ and in the present Qurʾānic context it is used in the sense of taking away of the soul, either temporarily, as during sleep (as in ), or permanently, as at the time of death (as in ; ; ; , ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; , ; ). In verse , it is used to refer to the taking of the soul both during sleep and death: ‘It is Allah who takes (yatawaffā) the souls at death, and those that have not died during their sleep. He retains those for whom He has decreed death, but releases the rest for a specified term.’ The passive form of the verb, tuwuffiya means ‘to die,’ ‘to expire,’ and to ‘pass away.’ It occurs in , . In a tradition, Imam ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā (ʿa) explains that Jesus Christ (ʿa) “was raised alive from the earth to the heaven. Then his soul was taken away between the earth and the heaven. After he was raised to the heaven his soul was restored to his body, and hence the words of God, the Almighty and the Glorious, ‘When Allah said: ‘O Jesus, I shall take you[r soul], and I shall raise you up to Myself…’ ” (ʿUyūn akhbār al-Riḍā, Tehran: Intishārāt-e Jahān, n.d., ed. Sayyid Mahdī al-Ḥusaynī al-Lājwardī, vol. 1, p. 215; cf. Biḥār al-anwār, vol. TRANSLITERATION fa-ʾammā lladhīna kafarū fa-ʾuʿadhdhibuhum ʿadhāban shadīdan fī d-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati wa-mā lahum min nāṣirīna

TRANSLATION And among the People of the Book is he who if you entrust him with a quintal1 will repay it to you, and among them is he who, if you entrust him with a dinar will not repay it to you unless you stand persistently over him. That is because they say, ‘We have no obligation to the non-Jews.’ But they attribute lies to Allah, and they know [it]. Quintal: hundredweight. The American Heritage Dictionary gives the following history of the English ‘quintal’: Middle English, a unit of weight, from Old French, from Medieval Latin quintāle, from Arabic qinṭār, from Late Greek kentēnarion, from Late Latin centēnārium (pondus), hundred(weight), from Latin centēnārius, of a hundred. TRANSLITERATION balā man ʾawfā bi-ʿahdihī wa-ttaqā fa-ʾinna llāha yuḥibbu l-muttaqīna

TRANSLATION Yes, whoever fulfills his commitments and is wary of Allah —Allah indeed loves the Godwary.

TRANSLATION Those who sell Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a paltry gain— there shall be no share for them in the Hereafter and Allah will not speak to them nor will He [so much as] look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and there is a painful punishment for them.

TRANSLATION There is indeed a group of them who twist their tongues to mimic the Book, that you may suppose that it is from the Book, though it is not from the Book, and they say, ‘It is from Allah,’ though it is not from Allah, and they attribute lies to Allah, and they know [it].

TRANSLATION It does not behoove any human that Allah should give him the Book, judgement and prophethood, and then he should say to the people, ‘Be my servants instead of Allah.’ Rather [he would say], ‘Be a godly people, because of your teaching the Book and because of your studying it.’

TRANSLATION Say, ‘We have faith in Allah, and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the Tribes, and that which Moses and Jesus were given, and the prophets, from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit.’

TRANSLITERATION kayfa yahdī llāhu qawman kafarū baʿda ʾīmānihim wa-shahidū ʾanna r-rasūla ḥaqqun wa-jāʾahumu l-bayyinātu wa-llāhu lā yahdī l-qawma ẓ-ẓālimīna

TRANSLATION How shall Allah guide a people who have disbelieved after their faith and [after] bearing witness that the Apostle is true, and [after] manifest proofs had come to them? Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

TRANSLATION except such as repent after that and make amends, for Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.

TRANSLITERATION ʾinna lladhīna kafarū baʿda ʾīmānihim thumma zdādū kufran lan tuqbala tawbatuhum wa-ʾulāʾika humu ḍ-ḍāllūna

TRANSLATION All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel1 had forbidden himself before the Torah was sent down. Say, ‘Bring the Torah, and read it, should you be truthful.’ That is Jacob (ʿa). TRANSLITERATION fa-mani ftarā ʿalā llāhi l-kadhiba min baʿdi dhālika fa-ʾulāʾika humu ẓ-ẓālimūna

The Holy Mosque or the city of Makkah, or the territory where they stand. 97 فيهِ آياتٌ بَيِّناتٌ مَقامُ إِبراهيمَ ۖ وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كانَ آمِنًا ۗ وَلِلَّهِ عَلَى النّاسِ حِجُّ البَيتِ مَنِ استَطاعَ إِلَيهِ سَبيلًا ۚ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِ العالَمينَ TRANSLITERATION fīhi ʾāyātun bayyinātun maqāmu ʾibrāhīma wa-man dakhalahū kāna ʾāminan wa-li-llāhi ʿalā n-nāsi ḥijju l-bayti mani staṭāʿa ʾilayhi sabīlan wa-man kafara fa-ʾinna llāha ghaniyyun ʿani l-ʿālamīna

TRANSLATION In it are manifest signs [and] Abraham’s Station, and whoever enters it shall be secure. And it is the duty of mankind toward Allah to make pilgrimage to the House —for those who can afford the journey to it— and should anyone renege [on his obligation], Allah is indeed without need of the creatures. TRANSLITERATION qul yā-ʾahla l-kitābi li-ma takfurūna bi-ʾāyāti llāhi wa-llāhu shahīdun ʿalā mā taʿmalūna

And you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, whereat He saved you from it. Thus does Allah clarify His signs for you so that you may be guided.

TRANSLATION Abasement has been stamped upon them wherever they are confronted, except for an asylum from Allah and an asylum from the people; and they earned the wrath of Allah, and poverty was stamped upon them. That, because they would defy the signs of Allah and kill the prophets unjustly. That, because they would disobey and used to commit transgression.

TRANSLITERATION laysū sawāʾan min ʾahli l-kitābi ʾummatun qāʾimatun yatlūna ʾāyāti llāhi ʾānāʾa l-layli wa-hum yasjudūna

TRANSLATION As for the faithless, neither their wealth nor their children will avail them anything against Allah. They shall be the inmates of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].

TRANSLATION The parable of what they spend in the life of this world is that of a cold wind that strikes the tillage of a people who wronged themselves, destroying it. Allah does not wrong them, but they wrong themselves.

118 يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا لا تَتَّخِذوا بِطانَةً مِن دونِكُم لا يَألونَكُم خَبالًا وَدّوا ما عَنِتُّم قَد بَدَتِ البَغضاءُ مِن أَفواهِهِم وَما تُخفي صُدورُهُم أَكبَرُ ۚ قَد بَيَّنّا لَكُمُ الآياتِ ۖ إِن كُنتُم تَعقِلونَ TRANSLITERATION yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā tattakhidhū biṭānatan min dūnikum lā yaʾlūnakum khabālan waddū mā ʿanittum qad badati l-baghḍāʾu min ʾafwāhihim wa-mā tukhfī ṣudūruhum ʾakbaru qad bayyannā lakumu l-ʾāyāti ʾin kuntum taʿqilūna

TRANSLATION O you who have faith! Do not take your confidants from others than yourselves; they will spare nothing to ruin you. They are eager to see you in distress. Hatred has already shown itself from their mouths, and what their breasts hide [within] is yet worse. We have certainly made the signs clear for you, should you apply reason.

119 ها أَنتُم أُولاءِ تُحِبّونَهُم وَلا يُحِبّونَكُم وَتُؤمِنونَ بِالكِتابِ كُلِّهِ وَإِذا لَقوكُم قالوا آمَنّا وَإِذا خَلَوا عَضّوا عَلَيكُمُ الأَنامِلَ مِنَ الغَيظِ ۚ قُل موتوا بِغَيظِكُم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَليمٌ بِذاتِ الصُّدورِ TRANSLITERATION hā-ʾantum ʾulāʾi tuḥibbūnahum wa-lā yuḥibbūnakum wa-tuʾminūna bi-l-kitābi kullihī wa-ʾidhā laqūkum qālū ʾāmannā wa-ʾidhā khalaw ʿaḍḍū ʿalaykumu l-ʾanāmila mina l-ghayẓi qul mūtū bi-ghayẓikum ʾinna llāha ʿalīmun bi-dhāti ṣ-ṣudūri

TRANSLATION Ah! You are the ones who bear love towards them, while they do not love you, though you believe in all the Books; and when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe,’ but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips out of rage at you. Say, ‘Die of your rage!’ Indeed Allah knows best what is in the breasts.

TRANSLITERATION ʾin tamsaskum ḥasanatun tasuʾhum wa-ʾin tuṣibkum sayyiʾatun yafraḥū bihā wa-ʾin taṣbirū wa-tattaqū lā yaḍurrukum kayduhum shayʾan ʾinna llāha bi-mā yaʿmalūna muḥīṭun

Indeed Allah comprehends what they do. TRANSLITERATION wa-ʾidh ghadawta min ʾahlika tubawwiʾu l-muʾminīna maqāʿida li-l-qitāli wa-llāhu samīʿun ʿalīmun

TRANSLATION Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were slaying them with His leave, until you lost courage, disputed about the matter, and disobeyed after He showed you what you loved.1 Some of you desire this world, and some of you desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you away from them so that He might test you. Certainly He has excused you, for Allah is gracious to the faithful. That is, the spoils of war.

TRANSLATION When you were fleeing without paying any attention to anyone, while the Apostle was calling you from your rear, He requited you with grief upon grief, so that you may not grieve for what you lose nor for what befalls you, and Allah is well aware of what you do.

TRANSLATION Then He sent down to you safety after grief —a drowsiness that came over a group of you— while another group, anxious only about themselves, entertained false notions about Allah, notions of [pagan] ignorance. They say, ‘Do we have any role in the matter?’ Say, ‘Indeed the matter belongs totally to Allah.’ They hide in their hearts what they do not disclose to you. They say, ‘Had we any role in the matter, we would not have been slain here.’ Say, ‘Even if you had remained in your houses, those destined to be slain would have set out toward the places where they were laid to rest, so that Allah may test what is in your breasts, and that He may purge what is in your hearts, and Allah knows best what is in the breasts.’

TRANSLATION Those of you who fled on the day when the two hosts met, only Satan had made them stumble because of some of their deeds. Certainly Allah has excused them, for Allah is all-forgiving, all-forbearing.

TRANSLATION O you who have faith! Do not be like the faithless who say of their brethren, when they travel in the land or go into battle, ‘Had they stayed with us they would not have died or been killed,’ so that Allah may make it a regret in their hearts. But Allah gives life and brings death, and Allah sees best what you do.

TRANSLITERATION wa-la-ʾin qutiltum fī sabīli llāhi ʾaw muttum la-maghfiratun mina llāhi wa-raḥmatun khayrun mimmā yajmaʿūna

TRANSLATION If you are slain in the way of Allah, or die, surely forgiveness and mercy from Allah are better than what they amass.

TRANSLITERATION wa-la-ʾin muttum ʾaw qutiltum la-ʾilā llāhi tuḥsharūna

TRANSLATION And if you die or are slain, you will surely be mustered toward Allah.

TRANSLATION It is by Allah’s mercy that you are gentle to them; and had you been harsh and hardhearted, surely they would have scattered from around you. So excuse them, and plead for forgiveness for them, and consult them in the affairs, and once you are resolved, put your trust in Allah. Indeed Allah loves those who trust in Him.

TRANSLITERATION ʾin yanṣurkumu llāhu fa-lā ghāliba lakum wa-ʾin yakhdhulkum fa-man dhā lladhī yanṣurukum min baʿdihī wa-ʿalā llāhi fa-l-yatawakkali l-muʾminūna

TRANSLATION If Allah helps you, no one can overcome you, but if He forsakes you, who will help you after Him? So in Allah let all the faithful put their trust.

TRANSLITERATION wa-mā kāna li-nabiyyin ʾan yaghulla wa-man yaghlul yaʾti bi-mā ghalla yawma l-qiyāmati thumma tuwaffā kullu nafsin mā kasabat wa-hum lā yuẓlamūna

TRANSLATION A prophet may not breach his trust, and whoever breaches his trust will bring his breaches on the Day of Resurrection; then every soul shall be recompensed fully for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.

TRANSLATION Allah certainly favoured the faithful when He raised up among them an apostle from among themselves to recite to them His signs and to purify them, and to teach them the Book and wisdom, and earlier they had indeed been in manifest error.

TRANSLITERATION ʾa-wa-lammā ʾaṣābatkum muṣībatun qad ʾaṣabtum mithlayhā qultum ʾannā hādhā qul huwa min ʿindi ʾanfusikum ʾinna llāha ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun

TRANSLATION What, when an affliction visits you —while you have inflicted twice as much— do you say, ‘How is this?’! Say, ‘This is from your own souls.’ Indeed Allah has power over all things.

167 وَلِيَعلَمَ الَّذينَ نافَقوا ۚ وَقيلَ لَهُم تَعالَوا قاتِلوا في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ أَوِ ادفَعوا ۖ قالوا لَو نَعلَمُ قِتالًا لَاتَّبَعناكُم ۗ هُم لِلكُفرِ يَومَئِذٍ أَقرَبُ مِنهُم لِلإيمانِ ۚ يَقولونَ بِأَفواهِهِم ما لَيسَ في قُلوبِهِم ۗ وَاللَّهُ أَعلَمُ بِما يَكتُمونَ TRANSLITERATION wa-li-yaʿlama lladhīna nāfaqū wa-qīla lahum taʿālaw qātilū fī sabīli llāhi ʾawi dfaʿū qālū law naʿlamu qitālan la-ttabaʿnākum hum li-l-kufri yawmaʾidhin ʾaqrabu minhum li-l-ʾīmāni yaqūlūna bi-ʾafwāhihim mā laysa fī qulūbihim wa-llāhu ʾaʿlamu bi-mā yaktumūna

TRANSLATION and ascertain the hypocrites. [When] they were told: ‘Come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend [yourselves], they said, ‘If we knew any fighting, surely we would have followed you.’ That day they were nearer to unfaith than to faith. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah knows best whatever they conceal.

TRANSLITERATION alladhīna qālū li-ʾikhwānihim wa-qaʿadū law ʾaṭāʿūnā mā qutilū qul fa-draʾū ʿan ʾanfusikumu l-mawta ʾin kuntum ṣādiqīna

TRANSLATION Those who said of their brethren, while they themselves sat back: ‘Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed.’ Say, ‘Then keep death off from yourselves, should you be truthful.’

TRANSLATION Do not suppose those who were slain in the way of Allah to be dead; rather they are living and provided for near their Lord,

TRANSLATION exulting in what Allah has given them out of His grace, and rejoicing for those who have not yet joined them from [those left] behind them that they will have no fear, nor will they grieve.

TRANSLITERATION yastabshirūna bi-niʿmatin mina llāhi wa-faḍlin wa-ʾanna llāha lā yuḍīʿu ʾajra l-muʾminīna

TRANSLATION They rejoice in Allah’s blessing and grace, and that Allah does not waste the reward of the faithful.

TRANSLITERATION alladhīna stajābū li-llāhi wa-r-rasūli min baʿdi mā ʾaṣābahumu l-qarḥu li-lladhīna ʾaḥsanū minhum wa-ttaqaw ʾajrun ʿaẓīmun-i

TRANSLATION Those who responded to Allah and the Apostle [even] after they had been wounded —for those of them who have been virtuous and Godwary there shall be a great reward.

TRANSLITERATION alladhīna qāla lahumu n-nāsu ʾinna n-nāsa qad jamaʿū lakum fa-khshawhum fa-zādahum ʾīmānan wa-qālū ḥasbunā llāhu wa-niʿma l-wakīlu

TRANSLATION Those to whom the people said, ‘All the people have gathered against you; so fear them.’ That only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is an excellent trustee.’

TRANSLITERATION fa-nqalabū bi-niʿmatin mina llāhi wa-faḍlin lam yamsashum sūʾun wa-ttabaʿū riḍwāna llāhi wa-llāhu dhū faḍlin ʿaẓīmin

176 وَلا يَحزُنكَ الَّذينَ يُسارِعونَ فِي الكُفرِ ۚ إِنَّهُم لَن يَضُرُّوا اللَّهَ شَيئًا ۗ يُريدُ اللَّهُ أَلّا يَجعَلَ لَهُم حَظًّا فِي الآخِرَةِ ۖ وَلَهُم عَذابٌ عَظيمٌ TRANSLITERATION wa-lā yaḥzunka lladhīna yusāriʿūna fī l-kufri ʾinnahum lan yaḍurrū llāha shayʾan yurīdu llāhu ʾallā yajʿala lahum ḥaẓẓan fī l-ʾākhirati wa-lahum ʿadhābun ʿaẓīmun

TRANSLATION Let the faithless not suppose that the respite that We grant them is good for their souls: We give them respite only that they may increase in sin, and there is a humiliating punishment for them.

179 ما كانَ اللَّهُ لِيَذَرَ المُؤمِنينَ عَلىٰ ما أَنتُم عَلَيهِ حَتّىٰ يَميزَ الخَبيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ ۗ وَما كانَ اللَّهُ لِيُطلِعَكُم عَلَى الغَيبِ وَلٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَجتَبي مِن رُسُلِهِ مَن يَشاءُ ۖ فَآمِنوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ ۚ وَإِن تُؤمِنوا وَتَتَّقوا فَلَكُم أَجرٌ عَظيمٌ TRANSLITERATION mā kāna llāhu li-yadhara l-muʾminīna ʿalā mā ʾantum ʿalayhi ḥattā yamīza l-khabītha mina ṭ-ṭayyibi wa-mā kāna llāhu li-yuṭliʿakum ʿalā l-ghaybi wa-lākinna llāha yajtabī min rusulihī man yashāʾu fa-ʾāminū bi-llāhi wa-rusulihī wa-ʾin tuʾminū wa-tattaqū fa-lakum ʾajrun ʿaẓīmun

TRANSLATION Allah will not leave the faithful in your present state, until He has separated the bad ones from the good. Allah will not acquaint you with the Unseen, but Allah chooses from His apostles whomever He wishes. So have faith in Allah and His apostles; and if you are faithful and Godwary, there shall be a great reward for you.

TRANSLATION Let the stingy not suppose that [their grudging] what Allah has given them out of His grace is good for them; rather it is bad for them. They will be collared with what they grudge on the Day of Resurrection. To Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is well aware of what you do. 181 لَقَد سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَولَ الَّذينَ قالوا إِنَّ اللَّهَ فَقيرٌ وَنَحنُ أَغنِياءُ ۘ سَنَكتُبُ ما قالوا وَقَتلَهُمُ الأَنبِياءَ بِغَيرِ حَقٍّ وَنَقولُ ذوقوا عَذابَ الحَريقِ TRANSLITERATION la-qad samiʿa llāhu qawla lladhīna qālū ʾinna llāha faqīrun wa-naḥnu ʾaghniyāʾu sa-naktubu mā qālū wa-qatlahumu l-ʾanbiyāʾa bi-ghayri ḥaqqin wa-naqūlu dhūqū ʿadhāba l-ḥarīqi

TRANSLATION Allah has certainly heard the remark of those who said, ‘Allah is poor and we are rich.’ We will record what they have said, and their killing of the prophets unjustly,1 and We shall say, ‘Taste the punishment of the burning. Verses - are addressed to the Jews. TRANSLATION Every soul shall taste death, and you will indeed be paid your full rewards on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever is delivered from the Fire and admitted to paradise has certainly succeeded. The life of this world is nothing but the wares of delusion.

TRANSLATION You will surely be tested in your possessions and your souls, and you will surely hear from those who were given the Book before you and from the polytheists much affront; but if you are patient and Godwary, that is indeed the steadiest of courses.

187 وَإِذ أَخَذَ اللَّهُ ميثاقَ الَّذينَ أوتُوا الكِتابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنّاسِ وَلا تَكتُمونَهُ فَنَبَذوهُ وَراءَ ظُهورِهِم وَاشتَرَوا بِهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا ۖ فَبِئسَ ما يَشتَرونَ TRANSLITERATION wa-ʾidh ʾakhadha llāhu mīthāqa lladhīna ʾūtū l-kitāba la-tubayyinunnahū li-n-nāsi wa-lā taktumūnahū fa-nabadhūhu warāʾa ẓuhūrihim wa-shtaraw bihī thamanan qalīlan fa-biʾsa mā yashtarūna

TRANSLATION When Allah made a covenant with those who were given the Book: ‘You shall explain it for the people, and you shall not conceal it,’ they cast it behind their backs and sold it for a paltry gain. How evil is what they buy!

188 لا تَحسَبَنَّ الَّذينَ يَفرَحونَ بِما أَتَوا وَيُحِبّونَ أَن يُحمَدوا بِما لَم يَفعَلوا فَلا تَحسَبَنَّهُم بِمَفازَةٍ مِنَ العَذابِ ۖ وَلَهُم عَذابٌ أَليمٌ TRANSLITERATION lā taḥsabanna lladhīna yafraḥūna bi-mā ʾataw wa-yuḥibbūna ʾan yuḥmadū bi-mā lam yafʿalū fa-lā taḥsabannahum bi-mafāzatin mina l-ʿadhābi wa-lahum ʿadhābun ʾalīmun

TRANSLATION Do not suppose those who exult in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they have not done —do not suppose them saved from punishment, and there is a painful punishment for them.

TRANSLATION To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and Allah has power over all things.

TRANSLATION Indeed in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day, there are signs for those who possess intellects.

TRANSLATION Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth [and say], ‘Our Lord, You have not created this in vain! Immaculate are You! Save us from the punishment of the Fire.

TRANSLITERATION rabbanā ʾinnaka man tudkhili n-nāra fa-qad ʾakhzaytahū wa-mā li-ẓ-ẓālimīna min ʾanṣārin

TRANSLATION Our Lord, whoever that You make enter the Fire will surely have been disgraced by You, and the wrongdoers will have no helpers.

193 رَبَّنا إِنَّنا سَمِعنا مُنادِيًا يُنادي لِلإيمانِ أَن آمِنوا بِرَبِّكُم فَآمَنّا ۚ رَبَّنا فَاغفِر لَنا ذُنوبَنا وَكَفِّر عَنّا سَيِّئَاتِنا وَتَوَفَّنا مَعَ الأَبرارِ TRANSLITERATION rabbanā ʾinnanā samiʿnā munādiyan yunādī li-l-ʾīmāni ʾan ʾāminū bi-rabbikum fa-ʾāmannā rabbanā fa-ghfir lanā dhunūbanā wa-kaffir ʿannā sayyiʾātinā wa-tawaffanā maʿa l-ʾabrāri

TRANSLATION Our Lord, we have indeed heard a summoner calling to faith, declaring, “Have faith in your Lord!” So we believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins and absolve us of our misdeeds, and make us die with the pious.

TRANSLITERATION rabbanā wa-ʾātinā mā waʿadtanā ʿalā rusulika wa-lā tukhzinā yawma l-qiyāmati ʾinnaka lā tukhlifu l-mīʿāda

TRANSLATION Then their Lord answered them, ‘I do not waste the work of any worker among you, whether male or female; you are all on the same footing. So those who migrated and were expelled from their homes, and were tormented in My way, and those who fought and were killed —I will surely absolve them of their misdeeds and I will admit them into gardens with streams running in them, as a reward from Allah, and Allah—with Him is the best of rewards.’ 196 لا يَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ الَّذينَ كَفَروا فِي البِلادِ TRANSLITERATION lā yaghurrannaka taqallubu lladhīna kafarū fī l-bilādi

TRANSLATION It is a trivial enjoyment; then their refuge is hell, and it is an evil resting place.

TRANSLATION But those who are wary of their Lord —for them shall be gardens with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever], a hospitality from Allah; and what is with Allah is better for the pious.

199 وَإِنَّ مِن أَهلِ الكِتابِ لَمَن يُؤمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيكُم وَما أُنزِلَ إِلَيهِم خاشِعينَ لِلَّهِ لا يَشتَرونَ بِآياتِ اللَّهِ ثَمَنًا قَليلًا ۗ أُولٰئِكَ لَهُم أَجرُهُم عِندَ رَبِّهِم ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَريعُ الحِسابِ TRANSLITERATION wa-ʾinna min ʾahli l-kitābi la-man yuʾminu bi-llāhi wa-mā ʾunzila ʾilaykum wa-mā ʾunzila ʾilayhim khāshiʿīna li-llāhi lā yashtarūna bi-ʾāyāti llāhi thamanan qalīlan ʾulāʾika lahum ʾajruhum ʿinda rabbihim ʾinna llāha sarīʿu l-ḥisābi

TRANSLATION Indeed among the People of the Book there are surely some who have faith in Allah, and in what has been sent down to you, and in what has been sent down to them. Humble toward Allah, they do not sell the signs of Allah for a paltry gain. They shall have their reward near their Lord; indeed Allah is swift at reckoning. TRANSLITERATION yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ṣbirū wa-ṣābirū wa-rābiṭū wa-ttaqū llāha laʿallakum tufliḥūna

TRANSLATION O you who have faith! Be patient, stand firm, and close [your] ranks, and be wary of Allah so that you may be felicitous.

U ime Boga: onog koji čini milosrđe, Milosrdnoga.

1 Alif, Lam, Mim. 2 Allah!...

6 On je taj koji vas oblikuje u krilu vaših majki, onako kako on to hoće.

– Bog pomaže, svojom pomoću, koga on hoće –

Suverenu Kraljevstva: Ti daješ kraljevstvo kome ti hoćeš i ti oduzimaš kraljevstvo kome ti hoćeš. Ti uzdižeš koga ti hoćeš i ti spuštaš koga ti hoćeš. Sreća je u tvojoj ruci, ti si, uistinu, nadmoćan nad svakom stvari. »

27 Ti daješ noći prodrijeti u dan i daješ danu prodirati u noć. Ti izvodiš živog iz mrtvoga i ti izvodiš mrtvoga iz živoga. Ti daješ potrebno kome ti hoćeš, bez računa. »

31 Reci: «Slijedite mene, ako volite Boga; Bog će vas voljeti i oprostiti vam vaše grijehove. »

32 Reci.

37 Njen Gospod prihvati djevojčicu priređujući joj jedan lijep prijam; on njoj dade rasti u lijepom odgoju i povjeri ju Zahariju.

Svaki put kad bi Zaharije nju išao vidjeti, u Templu, on bi pokraj nje našao potrebnu hranu, i on ju upita: « O Marijo! Otkud ovo dolazi?»

Ona odgovaraše: « To dolazi od Boga: Bog daje, ne računajući, svoju ishranu kome on to hoće. »

38 Tad Zaharije zazva svog Gospoda: on reče: « Moj Gospode! Dodijeli meni, s tvoje strane, jedno izvrsno potomstvo. Ti si, uistinu, onaj koji uslišava molitvu.»

39 Dok je on uspravljen molio u Templu, anđeli mu povikaše: « Bog ti najavljuje dobru vijest o rođenju Ivanovom: on će proglasiti istinitom Riječ koja izvire iz Boga; jedan poglavar, jedan čisti, jedan Prorok među pravednicima. »

40 Zaharije reče: « Gospode moj! Kako ću ja imati dječaka? Starost me dosegla, a moja je žena nerotkinja.»

On reče: « Bit će tako, Bog čini što on hoće.»

41 Zaharije reče: « Gospode moj! Daj mi jedan Znak.»

On reče: « Tvoj Znak Bit će da ćeš ti govoriti s ljudima pomoću gesta, tijekom tri dana. Zazivaj često svog Gospoda; slavi ga u sumrak i u svitanje. »

42 Anđeli rekoše: « O Marijo! Bog te izabrao, uistinu, on te očistio; on te izabrao predpostavljajući te svim ženama svemira.

43 O Marijo!

46 Od kolijevke, on će ljudima govoriti poput starca; on će biti u broju pravednika. »

47 Ona reče: « Gospode moj! Kako ću ja imati sina? Ni jedan me čovjek nikad nije dotakao. »

On reče: « Bog stvara onako kako on hoće: kad je on propisao jednu stvar, on kaže njoj: « Budi!...» i ona jest. »

48 Bog će ga poučiti Knjizi, Mudrosti, Petoknjižju i Evanđelju; 49 i evo ga proroka, poslanog sinovima Izraelovim: « Ja sam došao k vama s jednim Znakom vašeg Gospoda: ja ću za vas stvoriti od gline nešto poput oblika ptice. Ja puhnem u to, i ono jest: « ptica », – s dopuštenjem Božjim –

Ja liječim slijepog i leproznog; ja uskrsavam mrtve – s Božjim dopuštenjem –

Ja vam govorim što jedete i što krijete u svojim boravištima.

58 Evo jednog dijela Znakova i mudrog Podsješanja kojeg ti mi priopćavamo.

Pozovimo naše sinove i vaše sinove, naše žene i vaše žene, nas i vas, izrecimo jedno uzajamnu kletvu pozivajući prokletstvo Božje na lažljivce. »

62 Evo priče, Istine: Nema Boga osim Boga.

Ili pak, oni će dokazivati protiv vas glede vašeg Gospoda. Reci: « Milost je u rukama Božjim: on nju daje kome on to hoće. » – Bog je nazočan posvuda i on zna –

74 On posebice dodjeljuje svoje milosrđe kome on hoće : Bog je Gospodar neizmjerne milosti.

Oni propovijedaju laži protiv Boga, dok ustvari oni znaju.

Vjerujte u njega i pomažite mu. Jeste li vi odlučni i prihvaćate li moj savez pod tim uvjetom? »

Oni odgovoriše: « Prihvaćamo! »

On reče: « Budite dakle svjedoci, a ja, ja sam s vama, među svjedocima. »

Oni kažu, kad ih vi susretnete: « Mi vjerujemo!

On oprašta kome on hoće; on kažnjava koga on hoće.

Možda će on učiniti milosrđe.

Oni nisu slabili, oni nisu ustuknuli. –Bog voli one koji su strpljivi –

147 Njihova jedina riječ bijaše : « Gospode naš! Oprosti nam naše grijehove i naše neumjernosti u ponašanju. Učvrsti naše korake. Pomozi nam protiv nevjernog puka. »

Reci: « Posao u cijelosti pripada Bogu. »

Nek načini od toga predmet straha u njihovim srcima! Bog stvara život i on usmrćuje.

Reci: « Izbjegnite dakle vi sami smrti, ako ste vjerodostojni! »

Odgoda koju im mi dodjeljujemo povećava njihov grijeh.

Vjerujte dakle u Boga i njegove proroke.

Naslijeđe nebesa i zemlje pripada Bogu.

Reci: « Prije mene, došli su proroci s odlučnim dokazima, i s onim o čemu vi govorite, Zašto ste vi njih ubijali, ako ste vjerodostojni? »

189 Kraljevstvo nebesa i zemlje pripada Bogu.

» i mi smo povjerovali.

Ja ću njih sigurno uvesti u Vrt gdje teku potoci.

Budite strpljivi! Uzajamno se ohrabrujte u strpljivosti!

Budite čvrsti! Bojte se Boga! Možda će te vi biti sretni!
