Thanks for the explanation. For context, TheresNoTime-WMF did link to the page at Talk:Community Wishlist Survey#2023 survey timeline (perma/diff links so MusikAnimal couldn't have known), and I didn't realize you had backtracked on CWS going biennial because of the deletion (and the fact you announced going biennial in Tech News but not the retraction of that decision). The contents of the page is out of scope of user pages. Currently, this nonsense is being displayed from meta to the user's user pages in all other projects. Their user page has already been deleted here twice, but always recreated with some other nonsense contents, so I suggest its protecting from recreation. Note that the user seems to consider Wikimedia projects to be a toy, as he creates similar nonsense pages created across many Wikimedia projects or uploads nonsense files to Commons (see [User talk:Druryhunter36 here]). This is a walled garden of help pages, none of which are referenced from any standalone page. Meta is not a repository for random code samples, and its entire Help namespace is practically deprecated in favor of MediaWiki.org (in addition to being cluttered with junk I'm slowly cleaning out).   • Delete all most of these seem to have been test pages created as sandboxes, used for messing around then protected when admins got fed up with reverting the messes on them.   • Delete, not a useful page. The idea of a cross project manual of style is not feasible, there are such a variety of different types of projects in so many languages that it would be inappropriate to try to force uniformity. You cannot write a travel guide, an encyclopaedia, a dictionary, a media repository, a database and a news site using the same set of guidelines, what is required in one project would be inappropriate in another.   • Delete. This is just an unattributed copy of W:Wikipedia:Template index, specifically it's this version [1] of the page from 2008. I don't see a good reason for meta to host 15 year old copies of English Wikipedia pages. The contents of this page are simply not useful, it is not reasonable to assume that everyone using mediawiki (or even everyone within the wmf cluster of sites) is going to be looking to structure their project's templates around English wikipedia specific processes, policies and guidelines. 192.76.8.84 19:26, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Template:NOINDEX

Superseded by Special:TrackingCategories (MediaWiki:Noindex-category). I have reviewed the previous discussion and I no longer find even my own argument to keep compeling anymore. Any bot (I offer MABot services) can slowly replace this template with __NOINDEX__ where present over the course of one or two weeks, and get rid of a template with more than half a million transclusions. Category:News 2002 and all “News YYYY”

Categories “News YYYY” (from Category:News 2002 to Category:News 2022) in Category:News look pretty useless. Years categories (e.g. Category:2002) are sufficient, according to me. I ping Verdy p, their author. --Pols12 (talk) 14:04, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

They were categorizing by year, like all other years in the series. Note that there should be other members for each related year. This was done for some years, but the simple Category:2002 for example would contain things not related to (Wikimedia) news but also for other things or events. Many of these categories have multiple pages. But they may also be grouped in "News by year", to avoid overpopulating "Category:News". Over time, the number of pages has increased, and there are subtopic in "Category:News" that are also dated and could have also their members sorted by year. There's been an old project to trace the history of Wikiemdia and make it summarizable and easily searchable. verdy_p (talk) 21:03, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Yes. The main page Wikimedia Bangladesh/Chattogram Wikipedia Community has already been redirected, so there is no reason to keep the other related pages here. False vanishing

POINTy essay. This essay is originally created in zhwiki, and after one AfD and one deletion review, the zhwiki community still stands to reject having such essay in the Project namespace, see zh:Wikipedia:頁面存廢討論/記錄/2022/04/06#Template:假隱退, zh:Wikipedia:存廢覆核請求/存檔/2022年6月#Template:假隱退 and zh:User talk:Jusjih/假隱退. As community members continue to oppose having such essay, the author decides to "move it to meta so it also governs zhwiki", which smells POINT for me.

Apart from POINTy behaviour, while their point that "harassment after proclaimed retiring" is a problem that I acknowledge, there are still multiple issues standing out that would not disproves the validity of this essay as I have pointed out in zh:User talk:Jusjih/假隱退, of which the author simply neglects and proceeds to move the entire thing to Meta.

  1. Example given is the author themselves !voting to delete, then proceeds to delete it himself with a proposal that is brought out by him that hasn't reached community consensus.
  2. Example given is an example of false retiring, not vanishing.
  3. The topic of the essay is harassment while retiring and not false vanishing. False vanishing or false retirement itself does not have a direct correlation to "harassment" to me and other zhwiki community members who participated in the deletion discussions. Such "harassment" behaviour is unrelated to retirement or vanishing, and none of it needs retirement claims or vanishing to make sense.
  4. Giant logic jumps that makes no sense from "false retiring is dishonest" to "disadvantage to the condemned party", meatpuppetry and harassment. There is no description at all as to why there is disadvantage and what different does false retiring actually do to meatpuppetry and harassment considerations.
  5. Cherry specific points from local policies (which don't govern Meta for starters) and ignoring others. I assume the author translated the essay and used a enwiki link for a zhwiki policy since the enwiki policy doesn't have the part that they quoted. While the zhwiki user page policy disallows "campaigning with strong words", but allows "short one-sentence claims for each stance" and "no limitations if related to Wikipedia editing".

The entire essay is purely created to make their point and to work around zhwiki consensus, with major logic flaws and cherry picking policies. --LuciferianThomas 01:11, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

Also in the zhwiki diff I provided, you said "因此，不同意本站作站務論述，移入多語文且中文不能自動轉換的元維基也行" (therefore if [the community] doesn't agree to have this essay in the Project namespace [of zhwiki], it's also possible to import it to Meta wiki). You as a Meta sysop clearly understands that Meta affects global operations, and therefore you can enforce your point onto zhwiki even that the community doesn't agree. Oh...so people can't criticize about how the Wikimedia Movement/Projects operates, at least that's what I'm seeing from this essay. I don't think violating freedom of speech is a good idea, despite those people who are criticizing the movement may originally be Wikimedia editors. Certainly, internet hate speech shouldn't be tolerated, but I think that's a different case (and a much more extreme one). Providing inputs about what the movement or projects should improve are beneficial, in my opinion. If someone retires or vanishes forever, any criticism thereof should better be transferred to any active users who are willing to accept the responsibility, rather than kept in dormant users' pages. Criticizing about how the Wikimedia Movement/Projects operates requires caution on how to, neither unlimited freedom nor total ban. I prefer speedily keeping the essay in the content page from deletion, so anyone may make faithful edits, but renaming public essays started by others better be discussed first as good courtesy. Edit: author modified the content of the article. Despite still waiting for renaming, I would consider keep. Most essays, afterall, represent a small group of editors' (or a single editor's) opinion and don't necessarily reflect the policies that individual communities are willing to enforce. The latest version further supports my stance for delete.
  1. The author does not address the misleading parts that I have listed in my OP (point 4) regarding unacceptable logic leaps, quoting Harassment while false retiring or false vanishing makes the criticized and condemned parties in a clearly unfair disadvantage trying to answer and defend themselves.
  2. The new example further shows the lack of need for an individual essay for the issue. False retirement (in general) needs an essay, a combination of two concepts (i.e. false retirement plus harassment) doesn't.
    Everything that can be said for harassment while false retiring can also be said for harassment in general cases, making this a totally redundant essay. Do we need individual essays for "using AFD to make a point" etc. while we already have individual pages talking about AFD and POINT? All of the points that makes any sense are already fully covered by harassment policies, why is there a need for an individual essay?
Regarding your other points:
  1. Meta essays doesn't automatically govern over zhwiki: the Inclusion policy states the use of Meta:
    • Documentation and discussion concerning the Wikimedia Foundation and its projects (see some current discussions).
    • Documentation intended to help users contribute and collaborate in other wiki projects.
    • Multilingual cooperation of Wikimedia projects.
    • Relevant essays or advocacy (see some essays).
    • Primary research regarding the development of wiki projects.
    Every single point of inclusion are regarding Wikimedia projects. So is zhwiki not a Wikimedia project? As a global essay, is it counteractable and disagreeable by local community consensus?
  2. You have only retracted the inappropriate comment after I commented, so it was NOT a past misdeed at the time of writing; and now I am commenting on your current misdeed of making a false claim that it is a past misdeed. You have outright lied twice in this AFD already, of me stalking you and reminding a past misdeed.
One final note: stop telling me to retract my request so you can continue to make your point without even trying to face the problems I pointed out. zh:User:Ghren pointed out in zhwiki about the lack of direct correlation between false retirement and harassment, which you practically ignored; when I first opposed to your move request on zhwiki, you asked me to point out the issues in the essay, so I pointed out the five issues twice, once on zhwiki and once here, and you are still ignoring my main point.   • Didn't contribute to zhwp for long time but I do think such pages aren't that acceptable in zhwp in the last I had been there. But this is meta so I hope we can focus on meta arguments. I even cite Meta:Requests_for_deletion/Archives/2022#User:Kisnaak to thank your support to delete the problematic versions of a user page. This case to try suppressing an essay into a user page may become a dangerous precedent against free speech in the future. If so many users want to oppose new essays in main userpage, how about proposing a new guideline or policy to that effect? Yet existing essays in main namespace are not to be suppressed to avoid entrapping subsequent editors. This RfD has lasted over 4 months and I feel a closure is now needed. So, I'm deleting the article. Here's why:

  • I see a consensus that this would be better in userspace than in mainspace, due to the lack of relation to the title and being barely comprehensible.
  • The original creator of the page (Jusjih) has, however, expressed that they would not want this page in their userspace. I am not going to be moving a page to userspace, when the user themselves have expressed they don't want the page in their userspace. Therefore, I am deleting instead of moving to userspace. I am happy to restore the page into Jusjih's userspace, should they wish that to happen.
    • Regarding this, Jusjih noted that This case to try suppressing an essay into a user page may become a dangerous precedent against free speech in the future. However, I don't understand how this remotely relates to free speech. What you are adding is still visible, just on a different page on the same project.

/simple translations

These should ideally be deleted and translations into other languages should be encouraged instead. Meta-Wiki is a multilingual site and having a simple English translation doesn't really help as one can read and/or translate the page into their own languages. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 09:54, 4 August 2023 (UTC)

  • Weak Keep. As we have simple English projects it makes some sense to keep simple English versions of stuff here. These might be useful to non-native speakers or similar. 192.76.8.66 17:39, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
  • Keep We are not going to be able to translate for every language. There are going to be occasions where someone will have to read the English version. If we translate into Simple English (as long as these translations are simpler than their English counterparts!), it is easier to understand for people who would otherwise have to use the English version. --Ferien (talk) 21:23, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
  • Not done / Kept - without prejudice for specific pages being renominated. We now have local language variants working, so pages like /simple /en-ca /en-gb should be falling back to /en - meaning that we should be able to deprecate these if they are not actually localized (in this case, if it isn't actually simpler) - but that will require someone going through them, not deleting only because they exist based on this request.   • Delete When I first registered to be a part of it, I was unsure whether to join, as someone who had only recently started actively editing at that stage. The fact that user rights were listed on there probably contributed, as well as the fact you have to add yourself to a template. @Pppery: Worth while getting rid of the issue that populates first => Template:Red link. I am wouldn't recommend deleting a category that is still purposefully populating.  — billinghurst sDrewth 19:57, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Template:Pipe

Template:Flex columns and Module:Flex columns

Hi all

This isn't a standard undeletion request, more a request for information on deleted pages. I started a request here for Template:Flex columns to be copied over from English Wikipedia to Meta so I can use them. It seems as though the template was previously created but then deleted on Meta, however this appears to be because it was copied over incorrectly and didn't work, rather than any objection or technical limitation to stop the template existing. Does anyone know if there are any other reason this template shouldn't exist or any technical barriers on Meta that I'm missing? I'm also assuming the best way of copying the template is to simply start again rather than undeleting the broken page and then asking someone to fix it.

Copying templates from other projects is a huge pain, as they almost always rely on a variety of other templates and modules in order to work. On projects where I am an admin, I generally refuse to import for this reason. Unfortunately, until/unless we get universal templates (which could maybe happen because of f: some day), then it will be a huge problem. My personal recommendation is to forgo it entirely, but some admins or importers may be willing to put up with the headahce. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 11:24, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Koavf I've imported quite a few templates before from Wikipedia and agree it can be quite fiddly sometimes. This appears to have been the issue with the previous imports, rather than any specific issue with this templates function. John Cummings (talk) 11:39, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
I'm fine doing the import and letting someone work on this locally - assuming there isn't an overriding reason why these specific templates are unsuitable for this project (prior deletions were more that they were broken, vandal copies, etc). — xaosflux Talk 12:41, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Template:Tc was created as a simple example of template. It is used as such on several help pages about templates, and doc pages of template-manipulation templates. However, in 2017 it was recklessly redirected to the unrelated template:Tlc (while still in use) and its own doc deleted. FTR, this is only transcluded on one page and its translations anyway, see also Category:Pages recently transferred from Quality Wiki (a category that should at least be renamed if not deleted; imho it doesn't make a lot of sense to have this kind of category applied "manually" if the template is deleted). ~~~~

Template:Babel

Appears superseded by {{#babel:}} (by the way could someone perhaps link me its documentation?) as this just produces redlinks. Perhaps we could convert to wrapper but I’m not sure how. Aaron Liu (talk) 14:50, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Hmm, it seems like this used to be an (ugly) wrapper before User:NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh misguidedly broke it by importing from Wikipedia. There's also diff but the diff in the edit summary does not appear to exist. Aaron Liu (talk) 21:12, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
@Aaron Liu: I edited the template on June 22, 2022. All but one current user page transclusions of this template were introduced later to that (old usages were manually fixed). The only exception is this one which transcludes {{Babel}} without providing any arguments. That this template produces nothing but red links is merely the result of it not being used correctly and should not be a basis for deletion. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 05:08, 21 October 2023 (UTC)
@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh What is the correct use then? After you fixed them, new usages such as User:Rhyswynne have still popped up. The existence of this template is confusing and actively hurts those new to meta. Aaron Liu (talk) 14:14, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

Comment Comment The template and the updated module, both leverage the extension. If we delete the template and the module, then we need to go and edit all the pages that we've broken, which is pointless.
