Image:Adoptfirefox.jpg

Dear friend, hello how are you? :-)
Well, I'm fine. The question is: The ilustration "Image:Adoptfirefox.jpg" is OK? I ask it because I made other pic (see Image:Adoptfirefox-pt.png) based at it and I don't know if is OK. Please, try to tell with me, therefore my English is not ok. :-( Thank you! --FML hi 04:37, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it will depend on what happens with Image:Adoptfirefox.jpg. If that one can't be kept, unfortunately yours can't either. dbenbenn | talk 05:36, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
thanks! Can keep me informed please if you have news? --FML hi 05:55, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OpenTTD

Hello, i see some problems, OpenTTD is an open source game, but use to run the original game en:Transport Tycoon, than all graphics are copyrighted :)

I know u are not the uploader, but i dont exactely know what i must do when i see something like this. Thanks Bayo 12:16, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When you think an image should be deleted, write "{{Deletion request}}" on the image description page, then add an entry to the bottom of Commons:Deletion requests explaining your reasons for deletion.
In this particular case I think the images can be kept, since the graphics are not exactly the same in OpenTTD as in Transport Tycoon. dbenbenn | talk 14:47, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, next time i do it :).
but in http://www.openttd.org/downloads.php we can read
"OpenTTD requires the original version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe data files in order to function. Please refer to the readme for more information."
than the graphics are the same than Transport Tycoon Deluxe, OpenTTD just change binary of the game Bayo 23:18, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Look : Image:Adoptfirefox.jpg, and its history. I sent to shari the link to this page, explaining to him the situation. He answer on my gmail thant he agree to change in CC without conditions, so I think the 87.80.24.38 is his change. yug

Great! I'm glad he was willing to fix that. dbenbenn | talk 15:27, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all! --FML hi 16:11, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look

Please, take a look at Image:Wikifox.jpg and say to me if my change is correct. thanks! --FML hi 16:58, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alas, Image:Wikipedia-logo.png is not free. You'll have to ask the Wikimedia Foundation for permission to modify it. Where did you get the Firefox logo? I don't know what license it is available under, but that might affect your right to combine the two logos.
I think that User:Angela is a member of the Wikimedia Foundation, and should be able to give you more information. dbenbenn | talk 17:59, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Dbendenn, I need your help because my English is not good. The image Image:Wikifox.jpg isn't my (or mine?). I only think this image is not free, understand? And I talk (ask) to you for you see if it can keep in the Commons and, if not, what template must be need to put? thanks (if you understood me :)! --FML hi 00:50, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Platonic solids

Hi Dbenbenn, please feel free to put my images in whatever category you like ;) But please don't remove the header from the images descriptions, I'm used to do it this way for all my image descriptions. -- Thanks a lot, aka 17:13, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PNG versus JPG

Hi Nuno. I noticed Image:Pine cone with nuts.png, which you apparently modified with the Gimp. If you still have the original photo as it came out of your camera (probably in JPG format unless your camera is quite fancy!) it would be wonderful if you'd upload it with the name Pine_cone_with_nuts.jpg, then simply revert Image:Pine cone with nuts.jpg to your modified version. That way, people can see how you modified the photograph, and perhaps improve on your work. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 17:59, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Dbenbenn, i don't know what happened to that foto, but something wrong, for sure. The raw JPG photo (from the camera) is about 500KB/600KB, so this one is taking up 2MB i don't know why! I've requested it for deletion, there's no point at keeping it since it's quality will never be better than 500KB... Anyway, I can't save PNG using gimp, not sure what I'm doing wrong... it saves with huge file sizes... and preserves the layers (from a cut/paste op). Have to study it better, though.. -- Nuno Tavares PT 23:08, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't think you were doing anything wrong. PNG just isn't a very good format for photographs. I see that Image:Pine cone with nuts.jpg is still only 280KB. Could you upload the original 500KB version please? dbenbenn | talk 18:02, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Swedish Flag

Hi,

you put a tag on Image:Sweden flag small.png , redundant to Image:Flag of Sweden.png. The thing is, the colours are slightly different on the two flags, and until it is confirmed which one is correct I think they should both stay. In addition, I think the flags are both used, but on different wikipedias. I will bring this up with User:Thuresson.

Best regards, --Fred Chess 15:16, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I didn't notice the different colors. The monitor I'm using right now is very bad. I have nothing against multiple flags with slightly different colors (since the color is not objectively defined), but why resize to 80px? dbenbenn | talk 15:20, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

cleanup notices useful

Hi,

Rather than reply at the pump, I thought it would work better to reply here. Please see the discussion at Talk:Araneae. In the beginning there was only a "cleanup" notice, and the cleanup notice contained a link that didn't go anywhere and a second link that went somewhere but didn't seem applicable. I've seen a number of cleanup notices on the English Wikipedia, and I've usually been unable to figure out what the real complaint was. It's sort of like some bureaucrat coming into your restaurant, giving you a failing grade, and then just tossing the regulations book at you rather than saying that you have fruit flies hovering over your salad or whatever the real gripe is. Recently I tracked one cleanup notice to an unregistered user who had made some other questionable edits.

I was pretty irritated with the notice on the Araneae talk page, especially after receiving the ugly reply. I had reasons for the things this man didn't like. The means I chose may not have been the best, but it frequently takes a while to discover good work-arounds for wiki coding that doesn't quite get you where you want to go. When I found the Araneae page it was a sub-article to the page on wolf spiders and I put a lot of time into trying to make it a page where people could have some hope of inserting their own spider pictures where other people might find them.

By the way, going through hundreds of pix looking for the occasional spider picture that has no easy path toward it can take lots of time because all the thumbnails have to load. It could be very useful if there were a page where only the *.jpg titles were listed.

I hope this message doesn't sound angry toward you. I am still smoking a little from the other administrator's barbs.

Canon PowerShot A300

Hello Dbenbenn. I think the Canon PowerShot A300 is very very identical as A310, then, I propose you that will be created a category "Canon PowerShot A3X0", what you thing about it? Thank's, bye. --FML hi 20:23, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, they're different cameras, aren't they? I don't see any reason to combine the two. dbenbenn | talk 22:13, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the A310 is a "little upgrade" of A300, but the differences are very minimal. But, you know... Thank's, bye! --FML hi 22:18, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons e-mail

Hoi,

You as an administrator are involved in en edit war on Image:Dumper Truck.JPG

I have been asked to intervene and I did protect the article. By changing the picture you do something that is in my opinion not something that you have the right to do. By removing the picture and changing it, you are not able to attribute this picture. The picture is not yours; it is by Noorse.

The reason why many on the Dutch wikipedia use a marker is because of a fight with a wikipedia clone. The point is, the article was protected and it was not for you to upload without consultation.

Thanks, User:GerardM

Hi Gerard. I hope you don't mind I copied your email here. I prefer talk pages.
First, let me say I didn't notice that Dumper_Truck.JPG was protected when I uploaded the cropped version. As you might be aware, MediaWiki doesn't warn about that. I'm sorry; if I had noticed that you protected it, I wouldn't have uploaded a new version.
As far as "not something that you have the right to do": well, cc-by allows modifications. I do indeed have the right to modify the picture, including removing the watermark. I'm pretty sure that isn't vandalism. And as long as Noorse is attributed somehow (for example, in the image description page), it isn't a copyright violation either.
Finally, I'm surprised you deleted the image. The only effect of that action is that now you are listed as the original uploader in the image history, instead of Noorse. dbenbenn | talk 15:55, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I've uploaded the cropped version as Image:Dumper Truck, cropped.JPG. I suggest that Image:Dumper Truck.JPG should be unprotected. I won't be editing that page either way, but the protection stops Noorse from editing it. dbenbenn | talk 16:06, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Dbenbenn, I am deeply disappointed to see what happens here. You upset a user that made many useful contributions to several wikimedia-projects. Why? I cannot see any reason. Your behaviour is more like that of a vandal than the behaviour af an administrator. With every reply, you are making things worse. -- Quistnix 17:44, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Who have I upset, and how? GerardM? You? dbenbenn | talk 17:46, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SVG examples

Hi Datrio, and welcome to the Commons! I like the SVG examples you've been uploading. I'm pretty sure that although you used Firefox to render the images, you get to license them however you want. (Just like if you use a proprietary word processor to write a novel.) The copyright is held by you, not Firefox. I suggest changing Template:Svg example to simply use {{self|cc-by-2.5}}.

Also, I think it might make sense to merge SVG example - rectangle 1 and SVG example - rectangle 2 to one gallery page. I'll do that if you don't object. dbenbenn | talk 20:16, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for taking a look at these examples. First of all, regarding Firefox - I wasn't really sure can those images be treated as licensed, or can they not. I decided it would be the best to simply put information, that they've been rendered in Firefox, which is licensed under the MPL. That license template could be replaced... But personally, I don't think it's urgent to change it. If you wish to do so, please feel free to modify it.
As to the gallery, if you'll think of a way on how to add the SVG information to those files so it'll look good - also, feel free to change it. I played around with putting the SVG information on seperate pages, and decided that should look and work the best in the current situation. Also, if you'll think that'll be the most appropriate, the SVG information could stay on the Polish Wikibooks - but I've putted it on Commons, because it might get used on different language versions of Wikibooks.
Well, I think that's all from me. Best regards, Datrio 20:23, 31 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I merged all your example pages to SVG examples. This way anyone can see all the examples in one place. I also added the SVG code for each example to the image description pages. Now the image description pages have the same information that the individual example pages used to. Finally, I added all the images to Category:SVG examples, so they can all be seen there. dbenbenn | talk 00:00, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, this looks pretty good. I just hope the page won't get too big in time... But well, we'll see about that. Thanks for your help. Datrio 07:44, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Category Data structures and Datastructures

Hi David,

what's the intent of leaving these funny markers on the category pages instead of simply doing the move? -- User:Haui 06:27, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't have the time or inclination to move everything from Category:Datastructures to Category:Data structures. By adding {{Merge to}}, I added Category:Datastructures to Category:Redundant, so that others who do have the time to fix it can find it. dbenbenn | talk 12:33, 1 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
By the time of writing, there are exactly 5 (!) items (namely sub-categories) in category datastructures...

Heee...

Image:Commons-trans 135px ohne text.png already was deleted for several hours and so there were missing images on many hundred pages (incl. some main pages!) on different projects :-( Have a look to the logs if you don't believe. I just restored the image. --:Bdk: 14:34, August 3, 2005 (UTC)

User:DaB. shouldn't have deleted the image. I left a note at his talk page about it. The entire point of Category:Redundant is to hold redundant images that can't be deleted yet because they're used somewhere. I think the tag should be reinstated; hopefully no other admins will delete without checking for uses first. dbenbenn | talk 17:31, 3 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It happened again, see User talk:Paddy#Redundante Logos. What can we do that these stupid deletions don't happen any more? It's really frustrating and I got no time to restore these images now, therefore I hope you can help. Thanks a lot. --:Bdk: 09:41, August 4, 2005 (UTC)
I've modified Template:Redundant to be a bit more forceful. Perhaps that'll help. dbenbenn | talk 13:06, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

About transparency discuss

Hi again Gengis. Although transparent PNGs don't work in Internet Explorer, transparent GIFs do, as in the image to the right. What do you think? If I replace the large transparent PNG chess tiles with GIF versions, we won't need all the versions in Category:Chess tiles with different background colors any more. dbenbenn | talk 18:20, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You should know than GIF format is not free, and wikipedia has problems with this type of no free format.
--Gengiskanhg 00:16, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I am very interesting in collaborate with you in order to create a great chess board template. Now the big problem we face is the i-explorer incompatibility to png files, I can`t understan why if free software community supports their privative formats they can`t do the same supporting the great png format.--Gengiskanhg 00:20, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
GIF is free now. According to w:GIF, "the Unisys patent has ... expired". The Commons has no problem with GIF; see Category:Animation, for example. dbenbenn | talk 13:47, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian stamps

Hi Stan. I tagged Image:Stamp Canada 1942 1c.jpg as {{Unknown}}. Is there any reason to think the stamp is public domain? If all Canadian stamps are public domain, it might be a good idea to create a special template saying so. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 05:44, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Canadian stamps are Crown copyright and published by an organization rather than an individual, so they pass into the public domain 50 years after issuance. Stan Shebs 13:09, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Revert

Hi Paddy. I reverted you where you removed the {{Redundant}} tag from four logos. Even if a logo is used in a lot of places, it is still useful to have the redundant tag on there, so that users will know to use the other image instead. Perhaps we should have a new tag, {{Redundant with lots of uses}} that could make that clearer? dbenbenn | talk 21:26, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I put them on User:Paddy/TODO because they are IMHO highly critical! I did not want anyone to make the same mistake that I did ;-) And almost certaily they are used in Wiktionary too. I am not a fan of having any mor categories. I think about it. --Paddy 21:31, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree they're critical. If you merely want to get them out of Category:Redundant, I guess you could just subst: the template and remove the category. dbenbenn | talk 21:39, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanx for the help with the template. It seems that I am not in the best thinking mode today somehow (I do not know). I hope it works now. But I would have changed the template monthly though only to get it sorted by months. BTW the idea with subst is great. --Paddy 22:31, 10 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Here are two options. If you put [[:Category:Deleted duplicates, {{CURRENTMONTH}}-{{CURRENTYEAR}}]] in Template:Deleted duplicate, then every image will be in the current month and year category. But, because of MediaWiki bugs, each image will appear in the month and year that the image description page was last saved (which would mostly be when the {{Deleted duplicate}} template got applied). That might be good enough.
A more reliable method is to have Template:Deleted duplicate take a currentmonth and currentyear parameter. So you'd have to write
{{deleted duplicate|08|2005|IMAGE=foo|USER=bar}}
or
{{deleted duplicate|{{subst:CURRENTMONTH}}|{{subst:CURRENTYEAR}}|IMAGE=foo|USER=bar}}
dbenbenn | talk 13:38, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I had "Burma" replaced with Myanmar anything else to clean up? Thanx for the answers with the Template. greetings --Paddy 21:30, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Another question:

They seem different and I can not just change it on Template:Featured pictures candidates/Image:Central Park New York City New York 23.jpg --Paddy 22:15, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't noticed the difference before: the "cropped" version is a little brighter. I've reverted myself at both pictures. dbenbenn | talk 22:52, 12 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Higher resolution

Hi Kabir. Did you intend to upload larger versions of Image:Fireworks 5049.jpg, Image:Fireworks 5041.jpg, Image:French Park006.jpg, and Image:PioneerCemet033.jpg (which is almost identical to Image:PioneerCemet032.jpg)? dbenbenn | talk 14:55, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded the higher resolution files and took care of the French Park and Pioneer Cemetery images in a somewhat unorthodox way I but it seems workable to me. Thank you for your assistance with this. :::: Kabir | talk 02:32, 17 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good, thanks!
By the way, I think it would be good to put all the Pioneer Cemetery photos in their own category, say Category:Pioneer Cemetery, Cincinnati. Then you can make that category a subcategory of Category:Cemeteries and Category:Cincinnati, Ohio. dbenbenn | talk 18:43, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hello David. Thanks for the advice. I created the category as you suggested. However, I'm not sure how to create the subcategory, etc. Could you help me out with this? Could you also direct me to a site tutorial that could assist me with learning Wikimedia? Thanks. :::: Kabir | talk 12:57, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and made the category. See [1] for the page code, which puts the category in two other categories. dbenbenn | talk 16:06, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Duesentrieb. I notice you changed MediaWiki:Filedesc. Have you taken a look at Special:Upload since then? For me, next to the summary field, appears the text

[[Commons:Upload_summary|Summary]]:

Is there some other special page that also uses that message? dbenbenn | talk 15:55, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Huh, that's strange - I changed it, because the HTML was not interpretet either (the tags where visible). Feelö free to revert it, but i'm afraid that will not make it better. Apperently, this text is handled as literal ascii (i.e. it is escaped), not as HTML or Wikitext - which is kind of strange. Plase ask a developer about it. I would do it myself, but I gotta run... If I have time, i'll check back in a few hours. Oh, and thanks for watching out (and all your other great work on the commons) -- Duesentrieb(?!) 16:13, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. The HTML used to work. I've reset it to just "Summary", and filed bugzilla:3208. dbenbenn | talk 17:03, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I had this problem with non-interpreted html-source in Special:Upload before a few weeks ago. But it magically disappeared, so I didn't filed a bug report. --Avatar 23:44, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to work now - all is good :) Commons:Upload summary could use some more info, though. Some of the info given in Commons:Licensing, Commons:Criteria for inclusion and on Template talk:Information could be moved there. BTW: for media copied form wikipedias, it's important to copy all info, because the local duplicate may be deleted (there's a policy for speedy deleting such duplicates on some projects, like the german wikipedia). I have changed the text accordingly. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 09:54, 21 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Bryce Canyon Map

Did you really compared both? One of them is just a little bit brighter then the other, one of them is nut used. They both have the same source National Park service. These pictures are the same. Just load both of them in two separte windows and compare the, I will add the redundant over and over again. --Huebi 13:03, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you think the two maps are the same, then the smaller version is redundant to the larger. Feel free to add {{Redundant}} to Image:Map Bryce Canyon National Park.jpg, but Image:Bryce Canyon road map.jpg is certainly not redundant, since it is about 10 times as big. dbenbenn | talk 19:59, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
They are the same, believe me. Scaled down to the same size you can subtract them in Photoshop and mostly nothing is kept after subtraction. This is my suggestion: i will upload the original from NPS to the MAP, cause this one is referred twice in other wikipedias, the other is not. Is this a suitable suggestion for you? --Huebi 20:04, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Note that the Commons always prefers to have the largest possible images. I don't understand what your suggestion means. Please explain it more clearly. dbenbenn | talk 20:06, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I will upload the original from the National park Service in its original size to Image:Map Bryce Canyon National Park.jpg to have e bigger resolution there. This picture is referenced from other Wikipedies. At least, it will have the same or better resolution as Image:Bryce Canyon road map.jpg, which is not referenced. --Huebi 20:11, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Feel free to do whatever you want to Image:Map Bryce Canyon National Park.jpg. dbenbenn | talk 20:12, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

very nice of/from (don't know) you, that you've unblocked me. unfortunatley the blocking was while my windows(XP) got a big bug and I couldn'd go online. but all this doesn't matter now. I just want to thank you! regards, Schaengel89 @me 10:55, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the disclaimers have any bearing on the license. The images are still released under the GFDL. ed g2stalk 12:11, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ben, and welcome to the Commons! Just letting you know that I nominated Image:WMATA SmarTrip Card.jpg for deletion at Commons:Deletion requests. dbenbenn | talk 03:15, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Big "oops" on my part - I didn't realize I'd so badly botched it on that image. I uploaded the image to Wikipedia with the {{fairuse}} tag, which ought to straighten things out. Force of habit can be a real bother sometimes... Schuminweb 03:39, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nuvola images

Hi Alphax. It appears that Image:Nuvola 64 apps x.png, Image:Nuvola 64 apps xapp.png, and Image:Nuvola 64 apps xconfig.png, which you uploaded, are all the same. Any preference on which title to keep? dbenbenn | talk 23:26, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Also, instead of uploading the 64px versions, could you upload the 128px ones? The Commons generally wants the largest possible images. See Image:Nuvola 64 apps kcontrol.png, which I tagged as redundant. dbenbenn | talk 01:10, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Eh, I hadn't thought about it much... I originally went by a suggestion that en:User:ClockworkSoul made on w:en:, but yes, I can upload the 128 versions. If possible, I guess we can omit the image sizes from the filenames too. Alphax 14:41, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm uploading the 128 versions using Wikimedia Commonplace - Feel free to go and delete the 64x64 versions after I'm done, and then we can worry about duplicates :-) Thanks, Alphax 17:05, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I'd like to find out more about Nuvola this weekend. In particular, does the author have vector files for the icons? (Eventually we'll be able to upload resolution-independent SVG files.)
About the duplicates: perhaps it makes sense to keep them, with a note like "See also Foo and Bar, which are the same image but separate files in Nuvola." dbenbenn | talk 19:52, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I just checked - SVG versions are not available (well, the WMF might be able to buy them or something, since they are LGPL)... if image redirects work, that would also be an acceptable solution, with the most obvious (ie descriptive) name retaining the actual image. Alphax 23:55, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, the 128 versions of the apps set are uploaded... unfortunately, the 64 versions of quite a few are in use on fr:Accueil (and elsewhere). Time to start notifying and removing. Alphax 04:15, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Template:Cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0 has now a white frame around it when used with {{self2}}. It seems that it is because of your last edits, but I don't know exactly what it is. Could you take a look at it? Thanks in advance --Baikonur 20:22, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed now. dbenbenn | talk 21:32, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. --Baikonur 21:37, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

CC-SA in MediaWiki:Licenses

You're right, that's the latest version of the license; I misread it as CC-BY-SA 1.0. However, it should be noted that CC-SA 1.0 is deprecated, mostly because of the moral rights issues under some jurisdictions which make it impossible to give up attribution rights (even under US law, it's apparently difficult). In general, I think we should distinguish more clearly between "best practices" and licensing options which we mostly provide so people can upload works under them; see my comment on MediaWiki talk:Licenses.--Eloquence 22:54, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've never heard of this issue before, about cc-sa-1.0 being deprecated. By the way, perhaps you'd like to comment on my proposal at Commons talk:License selector. dbenbenn | talk 23:00, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ping

I wrote you a reply on User Talk:Gmaxwell which is so long I feel guilty. Feel free to not read the entire mess. :) Just writing you here so you won't miss it. Feel free to remove this note after you've seen it. --Gmaxwell 09:47, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

LU maps

I'm not 100% happy with the SVG renderer yet, so I'd like to keep the PNGs for now. I'll delete them when it's time. ed g2stalk 23:13, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. What's wrong with SVG rendering? Do you think it's a problem with inkscape that will eventually be fixed? dbenbenn | talk 13:08, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
One of the problems is that it isn't inkscape, but rsvg or something. Also I need to sort out a replacement font for my images, as we can't install Verdana legally (I think). ed g2stalk 14:01, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - i don't think the PNG version is redundant, because it was extracted from NASA's original, whereas the SVG version was created after that, by hand, trying to imitate the original. The images are also not identical, thus we should keep the PNG version. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 23:22, 18 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alright. Sorry about that. I removed the incorrect {{Redundant}} tag (you could have done so yourself, of course!). I can see that your original version was extracted from AC72-1338_a.jpeg, but I wonder how User:Jossifresco produced the high-resolution version. dbenbenn | talk 03:37, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

unlock a image page

please unlock Image:Commons-trans 135px ohne text.png. regards, Schaengel89 @me 17:42, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Perhaps now you see why I want the sister project logos that display at en:Main Page to be local duplicates (you asked about that at w:User talk:Dbenbenn a while ago). If the English Main Page used Image:Commons-trans 135px ohne text.png, it would now be unprotected. dbenbenn | talk 19:07, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki-commons.png

Please don't delete this image, it will replace Wiki.png. See the VP post. Dori | Talk 18:31, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. I didn't realize there was a new software feature, so I was deeply confused by your Village Pump post. dbenbenn | talk 19:18, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Not a problem, I didn't know that Commons images could do that until I tried it for the logo of sq.wikiquote and saw that I couldn't upload it. Dori | Talk 19:36, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Sorry for the copyright violations.I won't upload more images of this class.

P.D:Sorry for my bad english.

Help a newbie?

Hi. I noticed that Image:Kalimpongtown.jpg needed cleanup. I made a new version using the hi res version, then I clicked on "Upload a new version of this file" The new version is Image:Kalimpongtown2.jpg. I was just wondering, should I have saved over the first Kalimpongtown image, or did I do the right thing by giving the new version another name? Thanks for your help.--Shanel 22:45, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Commons, Shanel! Please save over the original picture when you have an improved version. But note that your new version is still scaled down. The purpose of the cleanup tag is that the cropped version should be higher resolution. dbenbenn | talk 14:21, 27 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dbenbenn! Thank you for your welcoming words. I am happy you liked some of the BurningMan pictures. I am going to India tomorrow so maybe soon I will upload some nice new pictures! You asked what camera I was using - I use the old good Canon Powershot G3. I will have a look at your galeries now :) Take care! Zoshi

The PowerShot G3 looks like a pretty good camera from a couple years ago. I noticed that all your pictures are low resolution. Maybe that's because you have the camera set to conserve memory, or maybe you're scaling the pictures down before uploading them here. Either way, larger pictures are always appreciated if you can do it! By the way, you can easily sign your name by typing ~~~~. Cheers, dbenbenn | talk 22:56, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed all my pictures are in low resolution. I scaled them before uploading in order not to stuff the wiki with too big pictures. I didn't know that pictures in higher resolution are in greater demand here. I will bear that in mind for the future and maybe reupload the Burning Man pictures in the original size as soon as I will be back home from my travels. Look! Now I know how to sign my name! :-) Thx for that! Zoshi 18:15, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to see a really big picture, check out Image:Africa satellite plane.jpg. dbenbenn | talk 18:19, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Language menu

Hi Martorell. I reverted your changes to the language menus at Commons:Village pump, Commons:Community Portal, and Commons:Administrators. The whole point is that if, for example, you know Chinese and no English, you can find your language at the top of those pages. With your changes, the pages said "chinese" in English, which wasn't helpful. dbenbenn | talk 17:57, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I understand so with your example. I think it could be fixed using the denominations in these own languages in the template, instead of the translation templates. I'm going to change the lang template, so see it and comment me again if it would be finest. --Joanot Martorell 18:08, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I reverted again at Template:Lang-VP-l10n. Although your solution with Template:MenuLang-i18n is clever, there's really no problem it solves, and it makes things more complicated. dbenbenn | talk 23:11, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please try to open this image? I can't do so even if this image listed in logs. --EugeneZelenko 18:12, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I can't. I always get a "Zero Sized Reply" error. Note that w:Image:Flag of Turaw, Belarus.svg works fine. I'll go try uploading a completely different SVG file with that name here ... dbenbenn | talk 23:05, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be fixed now. I don't know what the problem was, but I cleaned up the SVG by hand, and it works fine now. Strangely, the log shows that I reverted the image 6 times, though I actually never clicked "rev" at all. dbenbenn | talk 23:19, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for help! --EugeneZelenko 02:45, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings!

Hello! I hope you're well. I noticed that you have integrated an SVG version of the [Image:Flag of Japan.svg Japanese flag here] and on Wikipedia. Nice! I have made, altered, or appropriated a wealth of similar SVG images (e.g., Canadian flags) and have the ability to create them anew. How can I assist? Are there any naming or other conventions to follow? Pointers?

Thanks again! (If possible, comment on my Wikipedia user page.) E Pluribus Anthony 15:15, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think the best naming convention is to use "Flag of Foo.svg", where the Wikipedia article about the flag is at "Flag of Foo". For example, I put the flag of Washington, D.C. at Image:Flag of Washington, D.C..svg, not Image:Flag of the District of Columbia.svg or any other variation. Of course, there's no hard and fast rule, so it's all good as long as you upload your flags! (There's one technical issue: make sure your flags are at least "300 pixels" wide, since MediaWiki refuses to scale SVG up in most cases.) dbenbenn | talk 17:40, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Flags

Hi Anakin, and welcome to the Commons. Please use SVG format for flags, instead of PNG. I reverted you where you replaced Image:Flag of Bolivia.svg with Image:Bolivia 330 withoutcoat.png. dbenbenn | talk 18:16, 3 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi and thank you for your welcome ;-) I understand that SVG is better than PNG but can you just read this : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image_talk:Bolivia_330_withoutcoat.png ... i don't know how to create SVG files than i can't change the colors... but please don't delete my flag without changing the color of the SVG flag. I am a fanatic of Bolivia :-) and i just want to have a good flag. ;-) bye Anakin 23:44, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It's very easy to edit SVG files. Just open it in a text editor. Anyway, I changed to the colors you gave on the talk page. dbenbenn | talk 00:03, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be good if you uploaded the SVG flag serie with a standard width or height, like the Mark Mongenet's flag serie. The ratio and colors must be the official ones, but if there are no official laws, there was better to use a unique specialized site like vexilla mundi. --Sanbec 12:04, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why would it be good to use a standard width or height? SVG files have infinite width and height. By the way, the word is "series", not "serie". dbenbenn | talk 12:38, 4 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again! I hope you're well. I just wanted to let you know that I'll be uploading a revised SVG Flag for New Brunswick (to replace the one you placed in the commons recently). While the current one is very good, the one I have was extracted from an official New Brunswick PDF (I've more such images, too) and, methinks, is more accurate; there are slight differences between the two. Thoughts? Thanks, and more to follow! E Pluribus Anthony 21:41, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Please do! The quality of the flags at openclipart.org isn't that good. They're better than nothing, but they can usually be improved on. dbenbenn | talk 23:31, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
