A couple issues with Image:Interstate Highways.svg

The following roads are shown but are not Interstates:

  • US 60 east from Phoenix, Arizona

The following Interstates are not shown:

That's just from a quick look; there may be others. Do you know if the USGS uses an azimuthal equidistant projection on its topographic maps (and if that projection allows for rotating one map to match up with a larger one)? If so, I should be able to help with the missing ones. --SPUI 23:30, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info! I'll see if I can find any of these in the data I used from nationalatlas.gov. Also, I can easily change the map projection if that helps. User:dbenbenn 23:43, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Update: My data does have w:New York State Highway 17, which is the same as 86 east; it just isn't labelled as 86 east in the data. So that will be easy to fix. Perhaps the others will turn out to be similar. User:dbenbenn 01:55, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if you would be kind enough to look at User_talk:Huebi#Decategorizing_gallery_pages and give us some guidance, please? --Wsiegmund 00:30, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Replied there. User:dbenbenn 02:48, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your comments. I'm afraid that I inadvertently upset Huebi by asking where this was discussed. Wsiegmund 03:03, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I don't think you said anything upsetting. Huebi is just overreacting. User:dbenbenn 04:42, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but it seems I was too tired when I wrote the template; the wording was unclear. I hope you check the template again; I have modified the text, and added two more countries. thanks --Tarawneh 22:30, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

transwiki questions

Thanks for your example on Skymaster that had some transwiki and interwiki stuff.

  • Question 1: I see you have some text folding stuff in for the french example. Is this the way you expect translated versions will be done in the future (text for all version in one object?)
  • Question 2: Is the main purpose of the transwiki descriptions
eg {{en| foo fah {{ar| ...

to generate desciptions that native readers would view, or is the purpose to generate search terms that a searcher like Google would hit on. I ask because I have been grabbing text from Wikipedia for these and sometimes there is a lot of general information that should go in if it is for a search hit, but not go in if you just want to have a couple one line descriptions of the category or image.

-Mak 02:54, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Are you talking about Category:C-54 Skymaster? I don't see any French text there. About your second question, when I'm creating a category, I usually just copy the first sentence from the corresponding Wikipedia article, to define what the category is supposed to represent. User:dbenbenn 03:02, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I got it all mixed up. Sorry. It was the modification you did to template en. Your note says it the div desciption-fr tag is to hide text, but it is not clear to me when that happens. I changed preferences to French and everything displayed the same. Do I have to have a Quebec IP address for this to work?  ;-)
-Mak 07:35, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Because of the code I have in User:Dbenbenn/monobook.css, I only see what's in {{En}}, not {{Fr}} or other languages. More info at Commons:Multilinguality. User:dbenbenn 15:36, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help with templates

Hi. Many thanks for your help with templates. I'll change it soon in (most of) my already uploaded files and I'll do it this way from now on. But I can't understand very well why now the "begin-description" tag is in video info instead of in "page description" (in File:Dali-bai-danza-v04.mpg.ogg). I've created User:Colegota/Template:Video by-info based in Template:Cc-by-sa-2.5-es and this has no description template. Regards, --Colegota 06:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The templates {{En}}, {{Es}}, etc can only take a single paragraph as an argument. I made {{Description-begin}} template to do the same thing, but with multiple paragraphs. User:dbenbenn 15:45, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat

You are now a bureaucrat here on Commons. Congratulations! villy 12:52, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dbenbenn,

I've prepared a template update there : Template_talk:Lang-mp#&uselang=_links. Could you have a look at it - especially concerning the 4 languages I can't edit on my computer, and update the template ? Teofilo 13:30, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(nah, Category:Maps of New York City is for the city, so there's no ambiguity)

Thanks for the feedback, Dbenbenn, but I fear it may be U.S.-centric...?  In any case, I also suggest it's useful to remind or inform those folk not U.S.-savvy that there is a whole U.S. state called New York as well as that city crammed into its corner!   Regards, David Kernow 22:18, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I guess if you want to get it changed, you should see if others agree with you. (I disagree, but I won't stand in the way if I'm in the minority.) Probably Commons:Village pump is a good place to get some quick feedback. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 22:50, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in no hurry to make this move as (a) yes, it's not crucial; and (b) I'd prefer to find some bot to do the donkey-work. In the meantime, it's better I continue to continue trying to sort out the other maps and add some media. Best wishes, David 10:22, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't realize there was no picture there. I'll have to browse some other 14ers now. --Keflavich 05:31, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization in French

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Commons:Village_pump/Lang&diff=next&oldid=1623754

Language adjectives are never capitalized in French. But I don't want to quibble on that. Arnomane's resistance to change is a bigger problem. Teofilo 11:41, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I created a new user account in order to check the different steps a new user has to take when creating a new account in his own language. I found out that MediaWiki:Welcomecreation appearing at the end of the sign-up process has been translated into various languages, but has yet to be linked from the English (=language by default for Anons) message.

{{Welcomecreation/Lang}} should be inserted at the top, with links to the different translations.

MediaWiki:Welcomecreation/fr could be slightly improved by providing a Special:Preferences&uselang=fr link, and adding a sentence stressing the need to change the language preference into "fr", like this :

{| |bgcolor="#EEDDEE"|<h2>Bienvenue, $1!</h2><p>Votre compte d'utilisateur a été créé. N'oubliez pas de personnaliser votre {{SITENAME}} en consultant la page « [http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Preferences&uselang=fr préférences] ». En particulier, n'oubliez pas de sélectionner « fr - français » dans le menu « langue de l'interface », pour obtenir l'interface francophone. |}

Teofilo 14:58, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid the "$1" on the first line of MediaWiki:Welcomecreation/fr won't work. So it would be better to remove it. Teofilo 15:01, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

UED77's adminship

You are now an admin here on the Commons. Congratulations! Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops. Image deletions, however, are permanent, so please be especially careful with those. Cheers, User:dbenbenn 17:55, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Dbenbenn. I'll be careful with pic deletions! For now, time to try out my powers at the speedies! <evillaugh /> :P —UED77 19:20, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese translation

Hi, Dbenbenn. w:ja:User:NekoJaNekoJa translated MediaWiki:Captchahelp-text and MediaWiki:Captcha-createaccount into Japanese in w:ja:Wikipedia:井戸端, I came to tell it.

If you have already received them, I'm sorry to you.

OK, please add "(これは何?)" ( [[MediaWiki:Captchahelp-text/ja|(これは何?)]] ).

Knot images

Recently i noticed there have been removing the edge of two of the images i have done. now i do not know why did you removed the title on the image of the knot. is there a problem about having an edge? i am uploading the knots now as svg. when there is no reason for the edge then let me know now, so not to create a double work. here have a look at the other knots i have done:

i would prefer edges to stay becouse then i can have the same look on all articles and also allows me to recognise wich image is what and where should it go. so tell me why remove the edges?—LadyofHats 12:49, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most people here and on Wikipedia feel that images shouldn't have borders or captions built in. The MediaWiki software automatically adds a border, and supplies a caption as text. For example, see w:Adjustable hitch.
I guess the question is, where do you intend these images to be used? If you are making them primarily for Wikipedia, you might want to look at w:Wikipedia:Images for cleanup. The very first point says that images should not have borders.
You might want to ask at the Commons:Village pump for comments from more people. User:dbenbenn 17:58, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

templates

Hi, I have explained by point of view on the matter of template looks on Template talk:Information after more or less beeing cast aside. I see there is no way there is going to be any changes made to recent edits. I do want to be part of any kind of conflict and would rather avoid any contact with the editors since whatever I say will be dismissed. I have created a template using the style from the former simply because I, unlike the other editors, do not wish to impose my style. Please do not force me to talk measures such as not using any template by redirecting my recently created template. I appreciate your position but feel bullied into accepting this without my consent. Regards, Captain Scarlet 8 April 2006, 21:51 (GMT)

What are you talking about, "there is no way there is going to be any changes made to recent edits"? You have never edited the template, so you can hardly complain if it isn't the way you like. User:dbenbenn 23:20, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion templates

Hi dbenbenn. I see that we both edit on the deletion templates. So I will tell you what I was thinking about, when doing it... Basically I want to reduce and uniform all deletion templates. In the end there are only a few main templates left:

All other templates will be specific redirects or will give a further reason via a variable. I didn't take the old deletion request template layout as I think the new one with the direct resoning below is much more better (most people forget to add the reason). I was just in the work transfering the translations.... So maybe I can switch it back? ;-) Arnomane 23:40, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think I understand what you did (and I agree). I just wanted to get the page histories sorted out. I think I put everything back the way you had it, but now the history from Template:Deletion request is at Template:Delete, and the history from Delete is at Template:Speedydelete. Okay? User:dbenbenn 23:44, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion bot

...You have a deletion bot? Where were you with User:SportsPhotographer?! --pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:23, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's quite easy to do with shell scripting and wget. Tomorrow I plan to cleanup old uploads of User:MarketDataBot (see Commons:Deletion requests/Archives06#Category:Market data). User:dbenbenn 03:48, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, maybe that's the del request we were both thinking of re: weather bot del request. --pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:17, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
