So can someone explain to me why this template and any others like it are not blatant wikispam? Wikimedia do not exist to promote commercial products, however useful they may be to someone. <grumble, murmur, lumber back into cave> — SMcCandlish [talk] [contrib] ツ 10:20, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

Logo
[edit]{{editprotect}} The old official logo Inkscape logo 2.svg: has been superseded by the current official one Inkscape Logo.svg: . In the source plz replace "Inkscape logo 2.svg" by "Inkscape Logo.svg". --Tomchen1989 (talk) 12:34, 3 November 2011 (UTC)

- Both these logos are somehow blurred, in that small size, compared to Inkscape.logo.svg: which seems better.
- Now we use these three logos: Inkscape-yes.svg: – Inkscape-un.svg: – Inkscape-no.svg: .
Cats and Interwikis
[edit]{{Edit request}} Hello, I just moved all templates from Category:SVG software marker templates to Category:SVG created with ... templates because the templates in the old category where a subgroup of Category:Created with ... templates and should be also named like the parent. Per Commons:OVERCAT Category:Created with ... templates and Category:SVG marker templates should be removed and the new category should be added. The interwikilink ka:თარგი:Created_with_Inkscape should be moved from the /doc page to the template like the other links. Thanks. --Pyfisch (talk) 12:22, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
- The /doc umentation is not protected to make it possible for users who are not administrators to categorize the template and add language links. -- Rillke(q?) 22:24, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
Grey box too damn long
[edit]Why is the grey background box in this template so long? It is far longer than needed to contain the English text. Is this a bug as a result of internationalization, perhaps to accommodate an equivalent character string in another language that requires much more space? — Quicksilver@ 22:08, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- You are right, the box is indeed too long. It is coded to use 100% of the width currently available, i.e. the remaining space in the {{Information}} box. It is longer if you use it outside; when you set erroneously taggings like {{ValidSVG}} (or others like {{Inkscape}}) as parameters to the
Other fields
without {{Information field}}, the boxes are created unavoidably advancing the 'Informaton' box, above of it. - You may see an example of the intended correct use at IEC-906-1-plug.svg.
- Because of the templates protection state it is not so easy to find a swift solution; as it would be to allow a new parameter e.g.
width
. You can always write an embracingdiv
statement, like<div style="width:40%">{{Created with Inkscape}}</div>
. This would shorten the box, with the (not so bad) consequence that text in more talkative languages than English will need two lines. - At the moment we have these languages for {{Inkscape}}:
- They all got a width of 40%, except the English version which got 60% to highlight it. You see that for most languages 40% is enough to express everything in one line.
- If you think it useful, make a suggestion for the implementation of an additional optional parameter for this template which will overwrite the 100% value. Sorry, my English is not so good, I am not a native speaker sarang♥사랑 07:51, 21 March 2014 (UTC)
Edit request
[edit]{{Edit request}} This highly used template ({{Created with Inkscape}}: 57 000 + {{Inkscape}}: 41 000) needs some correction and expansion:
- The width as required above #Grey box too damn long
- The parameter expansions I inserted in the documentation.
Admin, before you change the protection status to "frozen" you may discuss with me how to ensure that no errors will occur. Thanks sarang♥사랑 09:37, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
- The complete source code to be copied:
{{#ifeq:{{{2|{{{1}}}}}}|v|{{ValidSVG|opt=&ss=1}}|{{#if:{{{err|}}}|{{InvalidSVG|opt=&ss=1|err={{{err}}}}}}}}}<!-- -->{{Autotranslate|1={{{1|}}}|2=Inkscape Logo.svg|3=Inkscape|4={{{IMPORTANT|}}}|base=Created with Inkscape|width={{{width|}}}}}<noinclude> {{documentation}} </noinclude>
- In {{Created with Inkscape/en}} the parameter |width= needs to be inserted too. sarang♥사랑 09:20, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- Done, though the new version comes with a slight problem: {{v}} display the valid SVG tag but also displays as "...created with Inkscape by v". We should either check for v and then supply an empty author or just make v the second parameter and not look at the first param when deciding whether to display the valid SVG tag. More parameters
[edit]Since it is possible to use {{ValidSVG}} / {{InvalidSVG}} as sub-templates, it seems an advantage to pass parameters to them. Additional to the width and style parameters for Inkscape, it should be possible to set independent values to the width and style parameters for Valid/InvalidSVG.
It is now mentioned in the documentation, but because the template itself is protected it is not yet implemeted there. --- Now Done
- See e.g. {{Created with Sodipodi}} how the additional parameters are passed to Valid/InvalidSVG. sarang♥사랑 16:41, 28 June 2014 (UTC)

[edit]The current version distributes to the different categories. The parameter "IMPORTANT" is properly handled in the sandbox but not yet there. When used without the Template:Igen the file extension must be evaluated; it is done trice: for the logo (parm. 2), the category (parm. 7) and the "what"/W3C (parm. 12); when used with Igen it is done only once by Igen.
The huge amount of files in this category is now a bit better diffused:
- many files are erroneously directly categorized, with
[[Category:Created with Inkscape]]
instead with the template. - another large number uses the template, but without any W3C-validation tag;
- vector graphics are now contained in Unspec SVG created with Inkscape, a maintenance category;
- raster graphics are in PNG created with Inkscape.
- W3C-tagged files are in either Valid SVG created with Inkscape or Invalid SVG created with Inkscape and their subcategories.

Reparation request
[edit]{{Edit request}}
Was meinst du?

W3C-unspecified
[edit]We now either have a "W3C-unspecified" text or very visible
template added.
Is there a way to add the template without either? Could {{Valid SVG}}
be replaced by text like "This W3C-valid vector image was created with Inkscape"? And could "unspecified" be made not bold text? The RedBurn (talk) 07:55, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
- Done Unbolded the word upon your request -- sarang♥사랑 17:05, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
{{Created with Inkscape|vopt=none}}
keeps the box away, but the "W3C-unspecified" will still be shown. These templates used to serve a single purpose, which was just fine. I see the additions as inappropriate advertisement for the concept of W3C validity. If someone wants to categorize SVGs by validity — fine. But that is no reason to prominently display information almost no one cares about below every single SVG file. Watchduck (quack) 14:01, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
@Sarang: Would you be willing to restore this template to its original form, without reference to the SVG's validity? I would like to add a simple "This vector image was created with Inkscape" to my files, but I stopped using this template after you expanded it. I would never add a template that says "This W3C-unspecified vector image...", and I would also not add that information. (Not just because it takes time to add, but also because I regard it as noise.) I don't mind if {{Igen}} is verbose and complicated, but it would be nice if {{Created with Inkscape}} a.k.a. {{Inkscape}} could just do what it was initially created for, and nothing else. If this is not possible, or if you don't want it, I will create an alternative template. Greetings, Watchduck (quack) 19:08, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hi @The RedBurn and Watchduck: when I saw it about ten years ago, the Category:Created with Inkscape contained much more than 100.000 files, which seemed to me highly overcrowded. I tried to diffuse that a bit, and used the W3C-validity as a possibility; later I invented the "topics".
- By the validity, we have now without any stated validation or topic Category:Created with Inkscape-undef with 14.841 files; unspecified without topic Category:Unspec SVG created with Inkscape with 54.584 files; valid files without topic Category:Valid SVG created with Inkscape still 10.161 files – these look all too overcrowded! Besides of unspecified, valid and invalid there exist also the files with uncheckable code, which are collected in the maintenance category Uncheckable SVG where they are patiently waiting for being repaired to W3C conformity.
- Of course, SVG files can be uploaded without any mentioning about their creation and the used tools. When somebody made a long time ago (long before my time!) the SVG created with ... templates it seems to me of not much use when only a small part is tagged, and all the others are not. So I spent a lot of time for that categorizing, and useable templates to do it. When it will make you happy, I can reduce the boxes and lines created by the templates, or even suppress them totally. But when you are thinking of avoiding the category diffusion, or the whole categorization, I won't agree to it, and many others won't. Kind greetings, -- sarang♥사랑 11:28, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- I think the categorization is a great idea, the only annoying thing is the added text in the Inkscape related message itself. It should only show up as an option, instead of having to add a parameter to hide it. The RedBurn (talk) 12:57, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- @The RedBurn: when you want another appearance, sure it can be done by a special new gadget, that the output becomes suppressed for your viewing. It might be also possible when you write your own Java script for your display. For a general gadget, you can ask at the appropriate portals, and explain your urgent need for another view (good luck!). When it should be necessary, I will add my part to such an action. -- sarang♥사랑 17:05, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Sarang: Obviously the point is to make the file pages look clean to others, not to ourselves. As RedBurn says, there is nothing wrong with the categorisation you added. This is just about what is shown on the page. I simply want a template that displays nothing but "This vector image was created with Inkscape." If it can display that in different languages, or if it adds some categorisation, that is fine with me. I think the information shown should correspond to the information in the source code. If nothing about validity is in the source, nothing about validity should be on the page.
- BTW: I would not be so adverse to your visible additions, if they were more modest. A green/yellow/red triangle in a corner would be perfectly fine. And the text could be shown in a mouseover. What do you think about that possibility? We could do some CSS tinkering. Greetings, Watchduck (quack) 20:22, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

- I have created {{Inkscape basic}} as a simple alternative. @The RedBurn: Maybe that is what you were looking for. Greetings, Watchduck (quack) 21:19, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Now this template uses a red background, when the validity is not specified. This draws an inappropriate amount of attention to a template that shows additional information. I brought it up on the talk page of {{Created with}}. Watchduck (quack) 13:01, 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Language icons
[edit]What on earth is the point of replacing the software logo with an icon for the user language? Most people know which language they speak, and don't need to be told by an icon. (Not to mention that symbolizing languages with country-based icons is a bad idea anyway.) And what is the point of showing the generic SVG icon instead of the Inkscape logo, when the tool used is clearly specified as Inkscape? The code in this case in {{Igen|Inkscape|+|%|s=d}}
. The overengineering of this template is getting from annoying to ridiculous. Watchduck (quack) 17:28, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
