First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

How to repair media file?

Before the video starts, one cannot see a starting image. Please compare (the second video is good):
So, because of the red x, the visitor will think that the first video is not working. I don't know myself how to fix that. Davin7 09:31, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to recat games videos :P A suggestion, is better "Game Videos" like Category:Music videos or Category:Adult videos or is better "games videos" like all others? Bye, and thanks again Libertad y Saber 02:32, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your support and your suggestion. You're right indeed and I'll change it into Category:Game Videos soon. There'll be some other category names too where I did not consequently follow one line, I've seen yet, and I had yet been thinking to review it all when I'm done. Don't hesitate to share other views as well. Muchas gracias y hasta luego Davin7 09:20, 19 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Video repairing

[edit]

For video repairing i'm rebuilt file from source data. I'm not sure, that it's possible in other cases. Serguei S. Dukachev 18:42, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know ho to do that. Maybe it's possible to download video and to repair source data? Davin7 16:49, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tinma&Elias&c. "Songs from Jerusalem"

[edit]

Hi,
do you have at hand the name of the (actual) caribbean (Trinidad/Tobago/.../I'm not sure) percussionist? I think that the ensemble had changed quite a bit, during last years, and that is why I did not set up any category [maybe, also because I'm too lazy ;]]] AND also, because I did not find information on the Brauer website[s].

I'm going to upload a few more pics of yesterday's T+E "Songs from Jerusalem" performance, within ca. next 4 hrs. Please be as kind as to improve on descriptions, if possible. Best, Wolfgang WeHaWoe 12:55, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you can do it correctly at once, because I not often around heren. Maybe reverting my last action on Category:Timna Brauer‎ is an idea, so that you can put the photographs in there? Davin7 18:53, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's OK by now. TX, WeHaWoe 15:51, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Transfers to Commons

[edit]

Hallo Davin7,

if you transfer files, please make sure you transfer the original size. Do not change licences. Using the Commonshelper is also advisable. --Nachcommonsverschieber (talk) 11:26, 24 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Nachcommonsverschieber, I don't know which one it was, but I usually do so. I'll search the Commonshelper you mention. Maybe the problem will be solved in that way. Regards, Davin7 (talk) 09:15, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was talking about this File:Freiburger Domsingknaben - Australien 2006.JPG. Regards --Nachcommonsverschieber (talk) 21:54, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see what I did wrong. I should have clicked on the image one time more, before saving it to my lokal disk. I'll take care next time. Thank you for mentioning. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Davin7 (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't change a license by the way. Davin7 (talk) 16:21, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Davin7!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Losang Samten.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Pay attention to copyright
File:5462064 Dieter Schuh und tibetischer Frabrikant.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
