Licence query

[edit]

Hi Vectormapper, just a query in regards to the licencing of the maps you upload: I came across File:Brisbane Australia street map.svg, which you licenced as Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Looking at the source however, it seems to state "Distributed with Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License". Are you sure your licence is correct? On another note, when uploading them, just place them in the correct category please, which is in this case Category:Maps of Brisbane, not Category:Australia, which is far to high-level. See COM:OVERCAT for more info. Calistemon (talk) 14:46, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments and recommendations. I have corrected the license on my site Now it is exactly the same there as on Wiki. Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication )))
Also thank you for indicating the correct category.))) Vectormapper (talk) 16:27, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I'd also like to thank you for the uploads, but also: right now there is certainy some work involved for several other contributors to correct the categories for each of your uploads. For larger cities (like here), you can just set "Category:Maps of <city>" and "Category:Street maps by Vectormapper" (yes: for consistent+unique series, we create new categories!). For smaller cities in the US, this might involve one straight category of the city, and one map-category for the county (like here). --Enyavar (talk) 22:56, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments and advice. I will try to correct everything and not make mistakes in categories and descriptions in the future. Vectormapper (talk) 23:17, 17 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree with Enyavar but, despite your above reply, you don't seem to have taken the advice and, for example, placed File:Sydney Australia street map.svg in both Category:Australia and Category:Sydney. I really do recommend you read COM:OVERCAT to gain a correct understanding as to what categories your maps should be in and why. Calistemon (talk) 01:11, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the clarifications. I will be correcting all categories of my posts in accordance with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Categories#Over-categorization - it's a shame that I didn't immediately understand what exactly the problem was with my categories Vectormapper (talk) 03:24, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are willing to learn, that is all that matters! Just also be weary of dismabiguation categories like Category:Oakland as these don't show up under the main categories once added, only the hidden ones. If you look at File:San Francisco and Oakland California US street map.svg you see what I mean.

OpenStreetMap

[edit]

Hello! Thank you for your contribution to Commons and for your files at vectormap.net. Nevertheless, it make sense to pay attention to licensing of uploaded maps. Some of them are evidently based on OpenStreetMap data, which is available under the Open Database License. It means, that your should mark, that your work uses data, which was created by OpenStreetMap contributors. I haven't found such marking neither description in Commons, nor at vectormap.net. In Commons it is possible to make reference by adding {{OpenStreetMap}}. Please, make in Commons references to OpenStreetMap at descriptions of all files, which were created with using OpenStreetMap data. I think, that OpenStreetMap contributors can ask you to do the same at vectormap.net site. Dinamik (talk) 14:22, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I see, that you've continued adding images, that were made with using OpenStreetMap data, with Vectormap.net watermark and without any notices about OpenStreetMap and ODBL. Really, community of Commons don't like any watermark, included directly to images. Other users can't force you no to add watermarks to your images, but anyone can delete watermark and uploaded new version of file. Your watermarks don't look good also because we know, that images are no fully yours, but are made from OpenStreetMap data, which was created by OpenStreetMap user via ODBL. It even looks like copyright violation. Please, add to all images, that you've uploaded to Commons and which have been created with using OpenStreetMap data, notices about OpenStreetMap contributors and ODBL license. 1. When creating maps, I use my own collection of geodata collected over more than 5 years of my work. Before Google maps, OSM maps and other online services appeared. I drew maps for Garmin, among other things.
2. What you call a “watermark” is the usual signature of a cartographer - similar to how my distant ancestor drew on his maps in the 17th century - https://vectormap.net/history-we-draw-maps-from-the-17th-century/
When using a map, any user can delete it and then use the card at their own discretion. Kirill Shrayber (talk) 17:43, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly, you started to create maps yearlier, even much earlier than Google Maps and OpenStreetMap appeared. But I see, that maps, which you've uploaded during several previous weeks, are based on OpenStreetMap data. Of course, if we have something in terrain, maps, which describe it with high quality, can look similar. But maps are not fully identical in details. It is evidently for me, that you have used OpenStreetMap data while creating of your maps, because your maps have the same details as OpenStreetMap database have. I didn't check all maps, which were uploaded by you, but all checked were based on OpenStreetMap. Please, specify your words „my own collection of geodata collected over more than 5 years of my work“. What are the sources for this collection? May you declare, that you didn't use OpenStreetMap data while preparing your maps and sources for your collection didn't use? Dinamik (talk) 21:51, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
