Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 19:09, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no info as to what the copyright status is of the picture on the cake. - Vera (talk) 22:51, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Vera! Thanks. I added source information to the image. But I am a bit puzzled why this notice was added... there was already a clear link to the flickr photo page, where the image is licensed CC-BY 2.0? In any case, would be a pity to lose that photo of that very awesome cake (it was delicious, too). Spinster (talk) 09:54, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Spinster (talk) 13:33, 17 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong description for photos "Siboga expedition" in category Jayapura?

[edit]

Hello Spinster,

I think something must be wrong with the 7 photos you uploaded in the category:Jayapura. To my knowledge the Siboga expedition

was far away from that location during the Siboga expedition. May be later, on a different journey after 1900? Or the photos come from de:Arthur Wichmann's first Dutch New Guinea expedition to this location in 1903? Do I see in this photo (File:UvA-BC 300.383 - Siboga - het eiland Metu-Debi, gelegen nabij de monding van de Humboldt Baai.jpg) a US-flag? It would be great if you could clarify this and correct accordingly. Thank you. -- Der Regenbogenfisch (talk) 17:49, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Temminck Groll Collection ‎

[edit]

Hallo Sandra,

These files was initially attributed as buildings in Kralendijk, but really these buildings in the Paramaribo, Suriname. See location (I gave the coordinates) and Google satellite view etc.

I notice, that accession numbers for these file is wrong - all three leads to other photos. Maybe this is the reason of incorrect attribution. --Kaganer (talk) 23:16, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers

[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gra Rueb

[edit]
Gra Rueb and statue by Gra Rueb

Dear Spinster, You removed Category:Gra Rueb from several images also depicting a statue by Gra Rueb. I disagree. These pictures both depict the person Gra Rueb and the statue she made, so there are good reasons to use both categories. Vysotsky (talk) 21:18, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vysotsky, I expected that you'd ask me this question. According to Commons policy, adding the Gra Rueb category to both images is over-categorization, as they are already categorized with a more specific category in that tree. However, I do agree with you that we need a way to be able to say that the images depict Gra Rueb personally, and for that purpose I have added structured data statements to indicate that. With kind regards, Spinster (talk) 06:39, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have to disagree. If Gra Rueb would be standing next to a statue by Antoine Bourdelle, two categories would be attached: Category:Sculptures by Antoine Bourdelle, and Category:Gra Rueb. Because these pictures depict both entities (Gra Rueb ánd the statue she is making), both entities should be described, and the rule of overcategorisation doesn't apply because it would create a mistake: these nice pictures of Gra Rueb would't show up in the Category:Gra Rueb. Addition of structured data doesn't help to let these good images of Gra Rueb show up in this category where now only a very mediocre photograph of Rueb appears. Or do they? Vysotsky (talk) 19:31, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jede Konsequenz führt zum Teufel. Look at these two nice photographs of Michiel Hendryckx, by ... Michiel Hendryckx. Exactly: in both categories, and rightly so. Vysotsky (talk) 21:07, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiflix time windows

[edit]

Fascinated as I was when you presented Wikiflix last night, I noticed that one of my favourite early films, the splendidly-named Wordsworth Donisthorpe's adaptation of weaving technology to record Trafalger Square, wasn't showing on the page for either the 1880s or 1890s. I think this is due to its vague date evading the pubdate range check. Maybe worth changing the lower dates to be ?pubdate > "1889-12-31", etc.? AllyD (talk) 17:07, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AllyD, apologies for the very late reply and thanks for being so observant! I added a very small modification to each query (from > to >=) and it seems to be fixed now - films published in the first year of each decade are now also listed, including the indeed very nice one of Trafalgar Square :-) Cheers, Spinster (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. In 2014, you made a category for the images in the book Category:The History of Japan (Engelbert Kaempfer). Some time ago, Leiden University published the images of the 1729 Dutch version of this book on Commons. Do you think I can add them to the category you created, and add some data regarding the Dutch version to it? I already made a category for the Dutch version, but it is no trouble to make a redirect of it. I think that is the right way, but what do you think? File:Louise Bourgeois (8522988358).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 06:07, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Grts. Lotje (talk) 15:47, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wat cool! Goed gevonden! 💪 Spinster (talk) 15:49, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please ignore this thing. The source URL still functioned, and I re-uploaded the damaged picture. KittenKlub (talk) 12:04, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, KittenKlub, I'm really grateful that you (1) discovered there was an issue with this file and (2) took the effort to research and fix it! Thank you! Spinster (talk) 13:14, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Issues of the kvg namespace error

[edit]

Hello, Spinster! Sorry to bother you, but I would like to ask you one question. Many of the svg images you have uploaded to commons, showing the stroke order of the kanji is specified the kvg namespace, and causes an error when we viewed with a browser. How should we do to solve this issue?

WikiFlix needs a future

[edit]

Hi there. I'm one of the "film guys" at Wikisource as I've once been called, and an administrator there as well. I remember meeting you briefly at a WMF virtual meetup a couple months back, and wanted to reach out and say once again that I'm quite impressed with your proof of concept of a WMF app that functions like a streaming service.

I wanted to first say I think it's super cool that some of the first sound films lapsed into the public domain by default this year, like Don Juan, and a test short film for The Jazz Singer, a feature talkie which will be PD next year. We're going to start seeing lots of the popular talkies go into the public domain from here on out, and I personally believe that this will bring up the demand for a freely licensed streaming service like WikiFlix—that and the fact that Steamboat Willie and other early Disney hits will go PD soon as well.

Our video player (even the recent update) could use some new features to put it on par with most modern video streaming sites, though. Hopefully that will be done in the near future.

Do you intend for this project to one day have a next step? Like a wikiflix.org site on WMF, or something else? Personally, I think it'd be the best thing since bread for it to become a reality one day, and have many ideas myself on things that could be included in this service at the end product, which I'd definitely be willing to share, on talk pages and/or perhaps more fully in userspace drafts.

I'm a coder myself as well as an enthusiast for old films, so I'm willing to help out with or support the project in any way I can. Would love to keep in touch. PseudoSkull (talk) 04:27, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @PseudoSkull, apologies that I'm getting back to you so late! I'm really happy with the interest you have in WikiFlix. I haven't given the project much attention in the past years, but I was thrilled to see that it still received some attention even this year, and am currently revisiting it a bit. I've just added a dynamic map of filming locations to the homepage! I have written down some thoughts here; curious what you think about them. I may experiment with WikiFlix a bit more during a small Wikimedia hackathon on November 12.
That said, I think it's quite likely that WikiFlix will stay a prototype for me, mainly intended to inspire others, not something that will become a main project for me. I will probably also redirect (and spread) my interests and time to other, similar portals on other topics. Not sure, I'm doing it as a hobby / in my free time! That said, I want to re-emphasize that I'm very happy if you (and others) take the idea and run with it. I do hope that, in the future, I can dedicate a bit more time to projects like this. Cheers! Your art map

[edit]

Hi Spinster! You probably saw that we used your map as an example on https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Kartographer#Via_Wikidata_query. I just wanted to let you know that we have now extended that example to show how images and descriptions can be shown on the map. Hi, why did you remove so many taggins? Please help and explain. thanks Qwertzu111111 (talk) 20:00, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Qwertzu111111, you will find some explanation at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Depicts/de. I see in the file history that you are using the Computer-Aided Tagging tool, but that is unfortunately a bit a controversial tool which may introduce 'wrong' depicts statements.
As described in the Commons:Depicts community guidelines I linked above: it's best to only add the most specific "thing" here in the Depicts statement. If you are concerned that less people will find your photos if you add less tags: you don't need to worry about that, because you already describe your files very well by giving them good file names and (text) descriptions, so they will be well discoverable via the Wikimedia Commons search.
Thanks for your contributions! :-) Spinster (talk) 17:07, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WikiFlix

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for WikiFlix. This is very useful. But User:Spinster/WikiFlix/Films from the United States is becoming quite long. Should it be split? Yann (talk) 11:10, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Yann, thank you and best wishes for the new year! I don't look at WikiFlix very often, I really consider it an experiment. Splitting that page sounds like a good idea, perhaps by date? Feel free to do it yourself if you want, I don't mind at all. Spinster (talk) 11:22, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Since it is updated by ListeriaBot, I don't want to break anything. It also could be split by film duration or animated/non-animated. I am interested as a list of public domain films. How to generate such a list where the video is not on Commons? Some films are missing: Night of the Living Dead, probably the most famous post-1964 public domain film. Yann (talk) 11:56, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a query for a list of public domain movies that do not have a video (P10) value. You also get the Internet Archive URL for the video, where known to Wikidata. Right now, it's over 32K. Happy uploading! --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:13, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnus Manske: Thanks, that's useful, but it contains films which are not in the public domain yet (for Commons at least, i.e. Metropolis, first published in Germany, not PD there until 2047). Also the IA link is not very useful, as YT versions are usually of better quality. How could it be ordered by date? Yann (talk) 22:12, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ooo, that's very nice, @Magnus Manske, thank you so much. Hey @Yann - this actually comes at a perfect time, since I'm currently rewriting OpenRefine for Wikimedia Commons documentation and I could use this dataset as an example! So I'll take a shot at batch uploading these files. May not be immediate though, I may run into problems, etc.
I will also look into splitting the US WikiFlix list. Technically I think it will be easiest for me (with my limited SPARQL knowledge) to split it by date, but maybe I'll change my mind.
All the best! Spinster (talk) 18:01, 4 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnus Manske: (A current, and sad, issue with that query would be that a good chunk of those films are now lost, so couldn't have a video.) PseudoSkull (talk) 06:38, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WikiFlix Tool

[edit]

I made a thing... Work in progess but I'm happy with the result so far. Stole your project name but maybe we should find a new one before I upgrade this to a "full" tool (if you think it's useful). Also found ~1K WEBM files with PD movies, we should upload the ones we don't hasve to Commons. --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:45, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Magnus Manske OMG I am blown away!!! I love how you link to the Internet Archive, even if there is not a video on Commons. Those individual film pages are super cool. Yes, I think I'm mainly hesitant about the name for legal / trademarking reasons - should we check with someone who's knowledgeable in this area? I'm not very inspired re: other names at the moment, and a bit busy with other things :-D
Maybe we can check in with film lovers here on Commons to gather some ideas and feedback? Spinster (talk) 17:05, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happy to hear that you like it. Still a lot missing from your project proposal page, but it's a start. Yes, let's get some more feedback from Commons, you probably know better who to ask for this field. I'll announce it on social as well, but I want to "upgrade" it to a full tool once we settled on a name. I like WikiFlix but yes, there might be trademark implications. Wikinema (wiki cinema)? WikiScreen (WikiWatch is sadly taken...)? WikiReel? --Magnus Manske (talk) 09:39, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
WikiKino? WikiFlicks? Or let go of the Wiki-prefix because it refers to many more platforms? FreeKino?
How about WiKino? --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You Tube? We Kino! Will people get this pun? :-D Spinster (talk) 14:49, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I asked @Gnom for some legal input via another channel and according to them we should not be too scared about the trademarking issue.
I'll ping interested people in various places. Wikidata's WikiProject Movies is also one of these. Where would you like input/feedback to be written down? Spinster (talk) 11:07, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about here? --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:20, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnus Manske: Great! I don't know how the list is built, but the first film (A Boy and His Dog) is not in the public domain. Yann (talk) 11:54, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann: Source. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:15, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Magnus Manske: The quality is horrible, and it was probably copied from YTn where there is a copyright notice at the end (at 1:25:58). Yann (talk) 13:28, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As always, we work with what we have... Magnus Manske (talk) 13:40, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
