The modern "cimbasso" is an instrument similar to the trombone contrabbasso Verdi, with 4-5 usually rotary valves. The original 19th century cimbasso was an upright serpent, similar to a Category:Basson Russe. German makers in the 1960s and 70s (e.g. Kunitz, Thein) called their F slide contrabass trombone with two in-line valves based on the Dehmel design a "cimbasso", seemingly just to confuse everyone; see Category:Contrabass trombones.
