Naming of the flags

[edit]

Following the idea of User:WhiteWriter I renamed all files in the same manner:

Now we have to decide how to handle the redirect File:Flag map of Serbia.svg. Delete? Move to neutral target? But how to determine "neutral target" ... #sigh# a×pdeHello! 20:39, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If the image Serbia stub.svg renamed to Flag map of Serbia (with Kosovo).svg why did you use Flag map of Serbia.svg instead of Flag map of Serbia (with Kosovo).svg? That's the source of this problem, IMO. Of course, you can fix it, and if the local communities decide that they want map of Serbia without Kosovo instead of map of Serbia with Kosovo, let them to change it. And I think that, after all replacements, Flag map of Serbia.svg should be deleted to avoid further problems (as you did with GLBT Serbia.png). mickit 22:12, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The idea of User:WhiteWriter having brackets to determine the depicted area came later (too late for me). I just reverted the (potentially offending) edit by Fry###, now please decide locally what file to use. a×pdeHello! 07:06, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The solution is to self-revert on all local projects (of course to use this new file name Flag map of Serbia (with Kosovo).svg) and without any canvassing comment. Than the local wiki communities will decide (if they care) which file will be used on their wiki. But first we must achieve status quo.--В и к и в и н др е ц и 22:30, 25 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As said elsewhere, wikimedia doesn't make facts, we just report them. It's a fact that 81 states recognize the Republic of Kosovo, and it's a fact that the UN doesn't. So I decided to remove the redirect and added a file that voices the message to choose which file to use. I hope this is ok for you! Later more, I got to hurry to school now ... a×pdeHello! 05:46, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: Thank you for coming here to find a solution everyone can get along with! a×pdeHello! 05:48, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is a good solution. As said by other participants on different pages, you should let local communities to decide whether they want to change the images. Not to bring decisions for them nor forcing them to choose by putting a new image that says "this is an error". I can not believe that we are talking about this, because these are the basics. You should only rename the files and let CommonsDelinker to do the rest. mickit 07:24, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think there are some other cases (nothing to do with Serbia) which would benefit from this general approach! AnonMoos (talk) 18:12, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try to explain one more time and then I'll give up. We had an image A and an image B. Some other user renamed image A to image Aa (A-->Aa). That's fine. Then you renamed image B to image Bb (B-->Bb). That's fine too. But then you're on different projects replaced image B with image Aa (B-->Aa) ????? This causes the entire problem. However, it seems to me that you do not understand that. Whenever we try to get an answer why did you do that, you say: "The name of the image B was not good". We do not talk about the name, we ask you why did you, as the Commons' administrator, replace image B with image Aa (B-->Aa instead of B-->Bb). mickit 15:07, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Finally, you made an image C and so forced local communities to choose whether they want an image Aa or an image Bb. You're only supposed to change the image name and don't do anything else. mickit 15:11, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  1. First I replaced "Image B" with "Image A".
  2. Then User:WhiteWriter renamed "Image A" to "Image Aa" (which I should have done first).
  3. After that I renamed "Image B" to "Image "Bb" and and replaced the old "Image B" with "Image C".
  4. Finally I replaced "Image A" with "Image Bb", actually reverting the initial replacement.
Now the old "Image B" is used but with a new file name "Image Bb" which is no more offending, "Image C" isn't in use anymore (aside on talk pages) and nominated for deletion (don't want to delete it myself, in this situation this might look as if I want to hide something).
My fault was the first step where I didn't care enough about the depicted area, which should have been discussed first ...
I apologize for causing so much trouble and hopefully now everything is named fine. a×pdeHello! 21:17, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is all your fault and I didn't comment on this page because it's about Serbia, a country where I currently live. I wasn't even advocating any of these two versions. My only complaint was that Common's administrators should not make decisions for local communities. And if an administrator make a mistake, he only needs to correct it and move on. Thank you. mickit 15:06, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
