no indication of early enough PUBLICATION to be PD PlanespotterA320 (talk) 15:55, 17 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is 'early enough'? --CiaPan (talk) 21:40, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Without attribution - before 1946 to be PD in both Russia and US, 1946-1949 for PD status in Russia but not US. With attribution - it depends when the author died.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 00:22, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PlanespotterA320: Thank you for the reply. --CiaPan (talk) 15:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The bio at Math.ru The History of Mathematics, which looks like it might be a source of the image,

does not give any source info apart from the БСЭ acronym. That is almost certainly ru:Большая советская энциклопедия = en:Great Soviet Encyclopedia. Its first edition took place in 1926–1947, which seems on the edge, but...:

  • I have no idea which year was the 'sha' ('Ш') volume published,
  • and whether that would affect the PD status (does the year of edition of the first volume, the last one or the specific one count, when it comes to determining the PD threshold?),
  • and even whether the image was actually included in that edition of the БСЭ/GSE.

:(

I have put an invitation to this discussion at the Shnirelman's bio at Russian Wikipedia (ru:Talk:Шнирельман, Лев Генрихович), hopefully we'll hear from them soon. --CiaPan (talk) 15:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the logo in the lower-left corner of the photo contains Russian letters IPPI, which is probably an acronym of Institut Problyem Peredatchi Informatsii – an Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ru:Институт проблем передачи информации имени А. А. Харкевича РАН, no enwiki counterpart), but that doesn't help in determining the original source or a date of first publication. --CiaPan (talk) 16:02, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
