Unfortunately, this image isn't properly licensed by snl.no. This came up last year, and I wrote Derek Shapton, the photographer, at his web site, derekshapton.com. He wrote back and said it wasn't. Now it's come up again, and he wrote me directly this time. Here is our conversation:

Hi George,

Derek Shapton here, we spoke last year about an Alice Munro photograph with mistaken copyright information, see below.

It has come to my attention that the image has recently re-appeared on her Wikipedia page with copyright information once again indicating that it has a Creative Commons license, would you be able to remove it ASAP?

It appears to have been sourced once again from snl.no - - I have been in touch with them as well about it with a request to correct the information on their site.

Thank you very much,

Derek www.derekshapton.com

Thanks for writing back so quickly. But if you ever do get the urge to contribute to Wikipedia by releasing one of your excellent images for others to reuse and edit, we would be very happy! User:GRuban - Wikimedia Commons

Hi George,

The image in question is in fact subject to copyright (I am the copyright holder) and is NOT free to use under Creative Commons license terms.

I am well aware of the problem - the image was distributed with mistaken copyright information by one of her publishers a few years ago and this has come up numerous time since. The publisher reached out as best they could to correct the mistake but inevitably some users slipped through the cracks.

I will reach out to snl.no today and let them know. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Best,

I'm an editor of Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia. I saw your photo of Alice Monro on https://snl.no/Alice_Munro labeled CC BY SA 3.0, in other words free for everyone to reuse as long as you are credited. Is that correct? Because I've also seen it on many other sites without that license. If it is properly CC BY SA 3.0 licensed, then we can use it in Wikipedia, but if it isn't, we shouldn't, and you probably want to write snl.no and tell them they do not have the license right.

Thank you, George Ruban

I understand. My apologies for uploading it. I wonder if we can make a note on our side to deter future would be uploaders from making the same mistake? Auguel (talk) 22:58, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Guessing when someone does or doesn't actually own the copyright to something can be hard. All we can do is make a best effort, and repair when things go wrong. I was suspicious, so I wrote the photographer, but I've been doing this for a while (see my user page, I think I've uploaded several thousand images here), and even so I still make occasional mistakes (see a few instances on my talk page!). --GRuban (talk) 23:08, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted per above. (Apparently a webpage formerly had an incorrect license, since corrected. Apparent good faith upload to Wikimedia, but never actually authorized under free license by photographer/copyright holder.) -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 16:19, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
