Two frame MastCam mosaic of the western flank of Mt. Sharp. This image was taken from the crest of Vera Rubin Ridge on Sol 1981, and primarily captures the Clay Trough and Lower Sulfate Unit. The Clay Trough is Curiosity's next target of exploration from Vera Rubin Ridge, which the rover will visit to follow up on orbital detections of clays in this region. Although clays have been previously detected along Curiosity's traverse, they were generally not visible in orbital imagery. Part of Curiosity's goal is to determine what makes this unit different. The overlying Lower Sulfate Unit is thought to capture the transition from the relatively favorable environment (long-lived bodies of near-neutral water) preserved in the lower Mt. Sharp mudstones to the more harsh (acidic and arid) environment recorded in the upper Mt. Sharp rocks. Image Credit: NASA / JPL / MSSS / Justin Cowart |
