Deterioration is due to a variety of causes: air pollution, dilatation of extraneous materials used during previous restoration work, problems of the stability of the monuments and the rock platform itself, wear and tear caused by tourists. A number of urgent measures are going to be taken and an international campaign to save the Acropolis was launched on 10 January 1977 with an appeal by Mr. Amadou-Mahtar M'Bow, Director-General of Unesco. Small factory as seen from the Ceramic Museum. The factories chimneys are an important factor in the pollution and degradation of the marble. French transcr.: L'Acropole est en danger.
