Description

Mars Express HRSC image of eastern Elysium Planitia and the large oval basin Orcus Patera. The origin of Orcus Patera is unknown, with multiple hypotheses for its formation. It may be a large, low angle impact, a volcanic feature, or a heavily modified fault valley related to the Elysium Mons volcanic center.

This image was taken during Mars Express 16,580th orbit of Mars, April 16, 2016.
