Description

Mars Express HRSC image of CO2 frost deposits in unnamed midsouthern craters. These craters are located in the western Hellaspontes Montes, a mountain chain composed of jumbled ejecta deposits of the Hellas Basin.

During the winter season, the surface becomes so cold at night that the atmosphere freezes out on the surface. This frost typically sublimates back into the atmosphere during the day, but can last through the winter in shaded alcoves. In the large crater at bottom right, a sand dune reaches high enough above the crater floor that it catches a small amount of sunlight during the winter season, which keeps the peak of the dune frost free.
