Description

Mars Express HRSC image of Arabia Terra. This region is located along the boundary between the Martian highlands in the south, and lowlands in the north. Water flowing across the surface early in Mars history carried large amounts of sediment through this region as material was eroded off the highlands.

An example of this sedimentation is visible in Henry Crater (central). Fog fills the low areas of this crater, highlighting a large central mound. This mound consists of layered sediments, similar to Mt. Sharp in Gale Crater. Another sign of the activity in this region is Naktong Vallis at center left. This fluvial channel flows into Arago Crater, which has been filled with so much sediment that it is nearly invisible.

This image was taken on Mars Express' 15,940th orbit of Mars, March 21, 2016. This image was constructed using HRSC's GRN and NAD filters. These filters were used to make synthetic blue and red filter images, which were then used to simulate this natural color view of hte Martian surface.
