Description On April 12, 2003, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured the beginnings of Tropical Cyclone Kujira. In the image, Tropical Cyclone Kujira whirls over the northwestern Pacific Ocean toward the Philippines. Kujira was packing 55 knot winds (1 knot = 1.15 mph) at the time this image was acquired, and within 24 hours had ramped up to 90 knot sustained winds with gusts up to 110 knots. Over the next three days, Kujira was expected to strengthen to 125 knot sustained winds (150 knot gusts), making it into a Level 4 cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
