Summary
[edit]DescriptionHellfire Pass Thailand P1150486.jpg |
English: Rail bed of the former Burma-Siam-Railway (the famous Death Railway) at the Hellfire-Pass. The Japanese Army needed the railway to connect Bangkok and Burma. The railway track was built 1942 and 1943 by British, Dutch, Australian and American Prisoners of War and by Asian Forced Laborers under terrible conditions of life - many of them died. This cutting in the rock was excavated with nothing else but hammers and chisels. Work continued at night, lit by fires and lamps; that’s where the name “Hellfire” comes from. |
