peaks,now breaking into fissures, now presenting dark frowning cliffs,bold promontories, and headlands sculptured into grim fantas-tic forms by frost, storms, and blows of Atlantic billows. Atintervals these rocky walls are cleft by deep bays running manymiles inland, studded with verdant islands of all shapes andsizes, and often fringed by dark green forests. These greatfiords, strikingly resembling those of Norway, are scenes ofbeauty such as are rarely surpassed in the most favored lands ofthe globe. On leaving the rugged coast-line we find the outerinterior to be a hilly country with eminences of no great eleva-tion. The inner interior is a elevated undulating plateautraversed here and there by ranges of low hills, the surfacebeing diversified by valleys, woods, countless lakes and ponds,and numerous marshes, which are generally shallow and couldeasily be drained. A large part of the surface of the island iscovered with these lakes and lakelets, abounding in trout andother fishes.
