Description |
English: This image of the graduates of Seattle High School Class of 1898 includes Mamie L. Keen. Seattle High School, or Central School, opened in 1889 at Seventh and Madison, after a previous building was destroyed in a fire. At the time the city's population was growing fast, and there were six public elementary schools, although just one high school. Mamie Luella Keene was born in Minnesota to Albert Gardner Keene (1854-1924) and Lura Ella (Kelly) Keen (1857-1929), moving from Minneapolis to Seattle sometime before 1900. After high school Mamie worked as a bookkeeper, then in 1906, married her father's business partner Melvin Albert (Bert) Weed (1882-1964). The Weeds had one daughter, Luell Weed Guthrie (1910-1987). The Weed family was well known in the Seattle community thanks to their involvement in many community associations: Mamie was a member of the Leschi Heights Improvement Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution; Bert, a pharmacist, was a member of the Freemasons, the Nile Temple, and the Sons of the American Revolution.
