Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Poundon Hill Transmitter I'm not sure what is transmitted from here, but the site was surrounded by high fences with swirls of barbed wire (see 303757). However, the gateway was invitingly open !

According to the map there were numerous masts here, but this was the only obvious one when I took the photo. Earlier maps show the masts on the other (northern) side of the lane. [Edit Sep 07] I have been contacted by Bob Dray with the following information for which I thank him: "It was the receiving station for Century House (MI6) the transmitting station was located at Gawcott. I worked at both stations for many years." I've also had the following information from John Trimmer re the derivation of the name:

"A pound was the over-night stopping point for the cattle, and this site is on a route, to Barnet fair and Harlow. The Drovers used landmarks like hills, churches, windmills, and prominent trees. They planted Scot's pine in this region, so if you see any large single specimens (and threes and fives), on your travels, you will know who planted them."
