The map does not cover the whole Exclusive Economic Zone. Several Marine Protected Areas fall outside the margins. Can this be fixed? (EEZ extends 200 nautical miles offshore) Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 14:30, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This was designed to have identical extent as File:South Africa location map.svg so it can work as a drop-in replacement for that. It's also used in many templates in many Wikipedias that would all have to be edited if the extent changes. I could upload a version under a different filename that extends further into the sea. As a matter of interest, what MPAs fall outside this map? (I presume we're not including Marion Island in this.) - Htonl (talk) 22:40, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Htonl, Alternative map would be just fine. I would do it myself if I knew how. I have not done all the MPAs yet, and there are a few more that would fall outside, but all except Marion/Prince Edward are inside the 200 nm continental EEZ, so that is the extent to use, as it future-proofs as long as EEZs stay at 200 nm, which is a reasonable expectation. There is an MPA off the Orange River mouth that will extend past the west side of the map, there is iSimangaliso on the east side, which displays at the edge, but the actual MPA goes off the map, and Agulhas Front MPA which goes right out to the southern edge of the EEZ. If you do a new map I suggest naming it South African relief location map with EEZ. Continental EEZ is sufficient.
As I add the MPAs I put positions of their approximate centres in the infoboxes, so clicking through the bluelinks will show where the little red dots fall so far. It is theoretically possible for a future MPA to be anywhere inside the EEZ border, and of any size, so scaling to show the EEZ border within the map should be best. There is supposed to be twice the current protected area by 2020, so more could come soon. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 07:24, 11 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
