Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

The photo "Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces in Battle of Shanghai 1937.jpg" was taken by unknown photographer and does not actually have the original caption; it was the author of the book who added the caption for his book. The photo has been used in many places with added captions; I therefore use the description from the current version of the photo on Wikimedia Commons. STSC (talk)

The photo was taken by a Japanese photographer to be published by the Japanese Navy (probably for war propaganda). So we have to keep original caption. Probably you want to use this image to prove the usage of chemical weapon by Japanese Army during the Battle of Shanghai. But unfortunately this image is irrelevant of chemical attacks. As long as I understand, both China and Japan had chemical weapons and both sides used it in the Secpmd Somp-Japanese War. I read a document that says the Shanghai Naval Landing Force had chemical weapons in 1945. However I couln't find any documents and any reliable sources that says this unit had it during the Battle of Shanghai. In the Battle of Shanghai, both side had information that their enemies (China and Japan) had chemical weapon. So Chinese side send the Student Coprs of the Chemical Shool to Shanghai, Japanese side also used gas masks. As you know, the Shanghai Naval Landing Force was the garrison of Shanghai International Settlement and their primary duty was the defence of Shanghai International Settlement, where were densely inhabited area. The Chinise officials and Chinese amateur webcites created and are creating forged caption and pasted and are pasting them to published Japanese photographs, and their forgeries were reveled. They lost faces and people start thinking that even the usage of chemical weapon might be forgery. It's dangerous. We have to prove some event not by forged caption but with document and reliable sources. In conclusion, your cheating actions are harmful not only for readers of Wikipedia but also for history. The administrator who has started Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#File:Japanese_Special_Naval_Landing_Forces_in_Battle_of_Shanghai_1937.jpg (とある白い猫) has stated on IRC in #wikimedia-commons in relation to that discussion:

I want to stab someone

This administrator has been very vocal on conduct on IRC -- he claims that saying "bullshit" is harassment, but he obviously doesn't have the same thought of expressing to an open channel that he wishes to stab someone.

I am not getting involved in the nexus of that dispute at AN/U, but neither should this editor/admin. From here on out he should see himself as unnecessarily involved and should no longer use the tools in relation to you, or that file, given his "I want to stab someone" inflammatory commentary. 85.234.150.42 23:02, 12 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
