Laurens~commonswiki
Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 16:09, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Blank map
editHi Laurens. What is the blank map from which you produced Image:250px-Old norse, ca 900.png? dbenbenn | talk 20:54, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
- Hi - have a look at en:Wikipedia:Blank_maps Laurens 15:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Could you be more specific please? dbenbenn | talk 15:54, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- I didn't create the image - the original which is now referenced points to this page - I assume the creator used the en:Image:BlankMap-Europe.png on en:Wikipedia:Blank_maps. Laurens 16:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

Soyuz rocket.jpg
editImage deletion warning | Image:Soyuz rocket.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

- Hmm - think I just copied the Copyright info from the en: page. Laurens 15:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
You asked why this image is tagged for cleanup. The original image is five times bigger (see here), hence this thumbnail will be deleted and replaced by the original map. Thuresson 16:06, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Cool - I made mistake at the time. Is there not an easy way to move or copy images from the language specific wikis? Laurens 16:16, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
Hi Laurens, thank you for moving pictures to the Commons. But remember, if you are not de:Benutzer:ChiemseeMan, you can't use the PD-self tag with his pictures. Please always include a link to the user page of author. --Fb78 10:20, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
- I understand, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way of dealing with this for images that were released as PD by someone on a language specific wiki. I did include links to the original image as far as I can remember. What do you suggest I use when uploading images like this? Laurens 17:44, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
- There is a template called Template:PD-user-wikimedia that can do this. In this case, you'd use it like this: ChiemseeMan --~~~~

Image Tagging Image:Tocharian1.gif
edit
Thanks for uploading Image:Tocharian1.gif. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use to release it under the Creative Commons or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. - I am afraid with the deletion of the image on the Japanese wiki we may have lost the information about the source of the file. Perhaps someone from the Japanese wikipedia might know where it cam,e from. I assume it was deleted because of the avialability of the commons version rather than there being a problem with copyright. Laurens 08:45, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Heads up
editI apologise for my edit summary here. I was rash and assumed that you wrote some nonsense and blanked the page. On further investigation, I noted that you were trying to list File:Finnugor nyelvek.png for deletion. However, something went wrong: your entry was like this, and I had to manually go and correct it to this. This is the second time I encountered this problem. Were you trying to manually nominate the file for deletion, or did you use the "Nominate for deletion" option on the toolbox on the rightleft? Jappalang (talk) 10:02, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- No problem. I probably did something wrong while trying to manually add the deletion request. I was editing the section on File:Jarchbold.jpg to create the new section for File:Finnugor_nyelvek.png when things got weird. I didn't know about the new tools for adding requests but will be sure to use them in future. The request still looks a bit weird on Commons:Deletion requests/2009/01/06 - don't know if it is because the deletion request subpage is wrong. Laurens (talk) 10:07, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- You might need to refresh the cache for the Deletions requests page (transclusions tend to hang around). Try clicking the following link to purge the cache — http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/2009/01/06?action=purge Jappalang (talk) 10:45, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, that worked. Laurens (talk) 10:48, 6 January 2009 (UTC)
Critically evaluate Flickr licenses | File:Monks in street 1.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid.
Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters.

Tip: Categorizing images
edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:00, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Your account will be renamed
editHello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Laurens. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Laurens~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
