History

edit

They were founded in 2006 by Omar Abu Sharia (Arabic: عمر أبو شريعة).[2][1]

The Mujahideen Brigades are the military wing of the Palestinian Mujahideen Movement, they split from the Fatah Movement, and its forces represent a former brigade in Fatah's (now rogue) militant wing the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which was called the Brigade of the Martyr Jihad Al-Amarin (Arabic: الشهيد جهاد العمارين) before the schism.[17]

Soon after the split they called themselves "Al-Aqsa Brigades - Mujahideen Brigades", and then they became "Mujahideen Brigades", and later took to calling themselves, "Palestinian Mujahideen Movement - Military Wing of Mujahideen Brigades".[18]

Militant activity

edit

The Mujahideen Brigades took part in the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis,[19] and later in the Israel–Hamas war, attacking Israeli forces both in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.[20][21]

Kidnapping of the Bibas family

edit

Shiri Bibas and her two young children, Ariel and Kfir, were abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz on 7 October attacks.

On 23 November the homes of the Al-Hasayna (Arabic: الحساينة) and Abu Sharia (Arabic: أبو شريعة) families were hit by an airstrike, local media named 93 Palestinian civilians in a list of martyrs from the event, 38 from the Abu Sharia family, 54 from the Al-Hasayneh family, and one person called Walid Ziara (Arabic: وليد زيارة).

Then on 29 November, Hamas claimed thsr Whiri Bibas and here children had been killed in an Israeli air strike while in captivity.[22]

The IDF eventually disclosed that the group who had been holding the Bibas family were the Mujahideen Brigades, based on CCTV footage they claimed they found in Khan Younis during their invasion of the Gaza Strip.[23][24] But the IDF maintained their claim that entire family had initially been kidnapped by "Hamas" (which they use to refer to both the political wing of Hamas and the Qassam Brigades), without explanining their evidenced that a hand over of Shiri and the children had occurred.[25] But Israeli media said that that Shiri and here children had been kidnapped by the the Mujahideen Brigades originaly.[26]

In a trilingual video (Hebrew, Arabic, and English) the group spelled the family's name "Pibas" in English, an erroneous transliteration of the ب used in Arabic, which is pronounced as somewhere between B and P on Palestinian names like "Al-Mabhouh" (Arabic: المبحوح or Hebrew: אל-מבחוח).[b][27]
