Talk:Grand Admiral Thrawn

The name Thrawn

edit

It has a meaning, unlike most Star Wars names. My entry left it open whether this is a coincidence or not. But readers would surely wish to know.

It is also not the first use in SF. Julian May uses it, as I note in my reference.

As I noted in my most recent edit summary, this "fact" is WP:Original research since there is no source connecting the character's name to the real world Scottish/Irish word. It may be interesting but it does not meet the criteria for inclusion. The Julian May usage is connected to the Scottish word, so would only possibly be relevant in a wiktionary entry about that. Thanks.— TAnthonyTalk 17:30, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Please stop restoring this unsourced tangential fact to the article. You will not find such unsourced name definitions in any other GA or better fictional character or biographical article at Wikipedia for a reason.— TAnthonyTalk 17:50, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Its inclusion would suggest that the meaning of the word has something to do with the character. It doesn't.— TAnthonyTalk 17:53, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
Um, you cannot cite a message board response from fans as a source, which you just did here. One user (Andrew Lim) seems to have explained WP sourcing to you in much detail. The "Full-time Star Wars geek" you've cited as saying "I recall from the annotated edition of HTTE that he mentioned being aware of the Scots meaning of 'thrawn'" is NOT a reliable source. But assuming she is correct, I'm going to have to insist on a page number from that edition if you can find one, thanks so much.— TAnthonyTalk 19:29, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
I would also like to note that Zahn being aware of the word doesn't necessarily make it relevant to this article unless he is suggesting he intended the connotation of what it means to reflect on the character. Lim also believes the connection to be a coincidence. Perhaps he will let you add this to Wookieepedia?— TAnthonyTalk 19:38, 21 July 2017 (UTC)Reply
