Meurig ap Arthfael was King of Gwent in the mid-ninth century. Thomas Charles-Edwards states that he may be the Meurig whose death is reported in the Annales Cambriae dated 849.[1]
Brochfael and his brother Ffernfael ap Meurig were sons of Meurig ab Arthfael.[a] The historian Wendy Davies states that Meurig appears to have died in 874, and dates his reign as 848-874.[3][b] but Thomas Charles-Edwards thinks that he may be the Meurig whose death is recorded in 849.[1]
