Horatius Cocles was an officer in the army of the early Roman Republic who famously defended the Pons Sublicius from the invading army of Etruscan king Lars Porsena of Clusium in the late 6th century BC, during the war between Rome and Clusium. By defending the narrow end of the bridge, he and his companions were able to hold off the attacking army long enough to allow other Romans to destroy the bridge behind him, blocking the Etruscans' advance and saving the city. This fanciful engraving of Cocles was produced in 1586 by the German-born Dutch printmaker Hendrick Goltzius. The full-length portrait shows him holding a raised sword in his right hand and a shield in his left. In the lower right of the background, Cocles takes on an army by himself.Engraving credit: Hendrick Goltzius

At first I thought it was aurora borealis, but it's actually our Sun brimming with solar activity.
And here we always thought a black hole was an invisible orb floating in space that would vacuum us into another dimension or wormhole us to another galaxy. Thanks Hollywood...

Still frame from upcoming Star Trek film depicting disruptor fire from Klingon warbird to Federation outpost. The bunker glows red-hot just before it explodes. Gotcha again! You're so gullible! It's actually lasers from Starfire Optical Range.

The filament (normally protected in a vacuum of inert gas) has been exposed to oxygenated air by a breach in the bulb allowing it to burn up when turned on.

3 suns of Tatooine as seen in the new Star Wars TV series. Fooled ya again! Tatooine has only 2 suns. This is an atmospheric optical illusion.
Now I know why they call them "hooters". Look at that "owl face". lol
This is here to remind me I found out art is more interesting than I thought when I happened to notice the author had painted her since early youth, and it was a somewhat common practice to do so. Seeing the development of these ladies portrayed by these artists reminds me of popular age progression videos. The evolution of copy culture is here...

Hand painting circa early 2000's on entrance to primitive communal public toilets. This penis shaped figure and other overtly sexual depictions of female genitalia were frequently displayed in this manner during the period. It was a barbaric and hedonistic age so it is believed the paintings may be representations or symbols of the many gods they worshipped which might have included phallic and fertility god worship. It is also believed the privacy features built into the public lavatory may have been included so patrons could also use the time as a private place of reflection or prayer to these gods as they paid tribute to them with their devotional paintings in a sacred ritual known as the Bathroom Graffiti.{{cetacean needed}}

Any article with more than three headings automatically gets a table of contents (TOC). The TOC is placed above the first section heading. All text above the first section heading is commonly referred to as the lead section. Depending on the overall length of the article, this introduction should not exceed one to four paragraphs in length and should summarize the article's key points.
If you do not like the TOC placement in an article, you can move it by inserting __TOC__ where you would like it placed. If you do not want a TOC on a particular page, add the text __NOTOC__ anywhere on the page; if you, personally, do not like the TOC feature, you can disable it in your user preferences.
