In July 2024, for the second time we are embarking on a three-month translation contest or "translatathon" focused on the translation of biographies of women from other language versions of Wikipedia. For each of the three months, July, August and September, there will be virtual awards for the top three contributors of acceptable new translated articles as well as awards for totals over the full three months. If they wish, contributors may translate from the same foreign language throughout the contest. (Translations from English into other languages are not within the scope of this contest.)
We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in translating biographies of women from the other language versions of Wikipedia. While our top priority is new biographies, translations of articles about the works, organizations or achievements of women are also welcome.
The main goals of the event are:
- to extend coverage of women on the English Wikipedia
- to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of prominent women
- to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action on this specific area
- to support Wikipedia in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
- to promote new articles and images through social media.
Rules and FAQs
editBefore you start translating, you should check to see whether a biography has not already appeared in English under another title, for example as a variant on a woman's name (e.g. maiden or married name, additional given names or initials or with further details in brackets). You can usually find out whether a pertinent English version exists by checking whether English is listed as one of the other languages on the biography page itself or by consulting Wikidata.
What are the contest rules?
editIn line with other Wikipedia contests, articles must have at least 160 words or 1,000 characters of running text (excluding references, lists, boxes and headings) and should have at least two reliable secondary references (three for biographies of living people). Articles translated from shorter versions in other languages will qualify only if they are extended to meet these requirements.
When translating content from a foreign-language Wikipedia, you must provide attribution to the original contributor(s). This is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've translated content, disclosing the translation and linking to the translated page, e.g., Content in this edit is translated from the existing French Wikipedia article at [[:fr:Exact name of French article]]; see its history for attribution.
It is good practice to also place a properly formatted {{translated page}} template on the talk page of your translation. In this connection, see the adjacent box "Add to article talk pages". Further guidelines on translation are available at Help:Translation.
Can I use Google translate?
editIdeally, contributors will have at least a reading knowledge of the language. However, for some language combinations Google Translate and other machine translation tools provide a level of translation which can be used as a basis for producing articles of acceptable standards for the English Wikipedia. Articles which do not reach these standards are likely to be deleted. It is therefore important for contributors to ensure machine translations are fully checked and copy-edited.
Do all languages qualify?
editTranslations from any other language versions of Wikipedia are welcome. On Wikipedia, the most popular languages for translation into English have been German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese and Czech. Further details can be seen under Category:Translated pages.
Can I make changes to the page after translating it, e.g. to add more sources?
editYes, you can definitely improve the page after translating it, e.g. by adding more sources or changing the structure, presentation or wording of the article. All contributions should however be based on articles published in other language versions of Wikipedia.
If an article appears on another language Wikipedia, is the subject automatically deemed "notable" on English Wikipedia?
editA foreign language bio does not guarantee notability for English Wikipedia. Check the guidelines before you start.
Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)
editRed-link lists on women from a wide variety of fields can be accessed from the WiR Redlink index. Our Wikidata-based redlists (generally marked WD) are likely to be useful in identifying articles which exist in other language versions. These are usually indicated as site links although such links can sometimes refer to images and other items rather than articles.
- Listing on a bot generated redlist does NOT imply qualification for inclusion in the encyclopedia. Please read Primer for creating women's biographies.

Newly created articles which meet contest rules: July
edit- Remember articles need to have a running text or readable prose size of 160 words or 1,000 characters. Articles which are not long enough may be listed separately under "Newly-created articles which do not meet contest rules: July". You can check the length of any article by using Xtools article info and looking under "Prose" for characters and words. (Please do not use this tool to check more than two or three articles at a time or you will overload the system.)
