The European Cooperative for Rural Development (EUCORD) is non-profit organization whose mission is to increase farmers’ capacity to sustainably grow quality crops matched to the commercial needs of the agribusiness sector and in doing so, increase food security, develop the local private sector and improve the livelihoods of rural communities[1].
History
editEUCORD was registered as cooperative in the Netherlands in 2003 and has an office in Brussels. EUCORD promotes Public-Private Partnerships between civil society organizations, public agencies, and companies in the field of sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa.
Approach
editEUCORD’s goal is to develop an efficient and competitive agri-sector benefitting farmers, agri-enterprises and consumers. EUCORD plays the role of trainer (in good agricultural practices), facilitator (in helping farmers to access agricultural inputs and credit), and honest broker (organizing contract farming). These arrangements provide a secure market for farmers, which makes it more attractive and less risky to invest in improved agricultural practices.
Projects
editExamples of projects implemented by EUCORD:
- The West African Sorghum Value Chain Development[2] project, funded by Common Fund for Commodities, Diageo and Heineken, supported the development of sorghum supply chains in Ghana and Sierra Leone.
- The East African Sorghum Value Chain Development[3] project, funded by East African Breweries Ltd., Diageo, Common Fund for Commodities to develop a sorghum supply chain to increase incomes of sorghum farmers and enable beverage industries to substitute imported grains by locally produced sorghum in Kenya and Uganda.
- The Barley Organization of Supply and Training (BOOST)[4] project in Ethiopia, funded by IFC to improve the supply of locally produced malt barley.
- The Uhira Wunguke[5] project, funded by Achmea Foundation, supported cooperatives with the introduction of irrigation technologies in Eastern Rwanda.
Awards
editThe World Business Development Award (2010)[6] looks for organizations and companies demonstrating clear connections between their business practices and achieving the MDGs[7]. This was awarded to Heineken in partnership with EUCORD for their project in Sierra Leone. EUCORD’s role in this project was to assist Heineken with the development of a sustainable sorghum supply chain in Sierra Leone.
