This is a smooth bore muzzle loaded cannon. Located at Fort Knox, Maine, across the Penobscot River from Bucksport, Maine. The mechanism to set and retain the elevation is missing. This is an evolution of the similarly bottle-shaped Dahlgren cannon, improved with the large diameter handling ring that receives a rope sling when the cannon is to be lifted. The casting techniques were also improved with this type, resulting in a stronger device.
The fort was built to protect the river entrance. As the fort was located on a high elevation above the river the gun mounts were designed to point the guns downward toward ships.
