revdel?

Would it be all right to revdel this as a copyvio? Whilst there doesn't appear to be a revision deletion policy here, I saw that admins here have the capability to do so. Thanks. Sonia (talk) 08:55, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sure. I took care of that for you. We are admittedly lacking in policies in certain areas but instead develop conventions organically in many cases. I have noticed your efforts against vandalism in the period where those in the US are asleep. Excellent work. – Adrignola talk 11:58, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
There are 11 other revisions by the IP that contain the same copyrighted content. Please delete those as well. Thanks Kayau (talk | email | contribs) 13:18, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
That IP also has edited WebMonitor as well and may be User:Leonard64 logged-out. People are complaining that WebMonitor is a copyvio as well. These revision deletions are either an over reaction or not enough reaction to the larger situation. – Adrignola talk 13:23, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Query

It would be off-topic to ask at the reading room so I'm asking here. When may WJ be moved to wikijunior.org? When and where was the proposal made? When did wikijunior.org start to exist? Just some curious quesitons, thanks. Kayau (talk | email | contribs) 04:12, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

A recent discussion is Wikibooks talk:What is Wikijunior#Relationship with Wikibooks. Relevant background includes m:Wikijunior. --Pi zero (talk) 11:30, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, I didn't know that Wikijunior was never supposed to be a subproject. Interesting. Kayau (talk | email | contribs) 12:45, 2 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Starting a workspace for my book co-op

I would like to mark my wiki as workspace for my book co-op, and would like to be instructed how do this properly. If not here, where? Brotonamobay (talk) 22:10, 5 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Are you working to create a new book? If you are trying to coordinate the completion of several books by a group of people, you can follow the lead of our Wikibooks:WikiProject page and create a page in the Wikibooks namespace, assuming that what you are thinking of matches what is described on that page. Perhaps if you created your user page with some information on this co-op I would have a better idea of how to assist further. – Adrignola talk 23:43, 5 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

We are trying to start a writing project, any writing project. I've created my user page to more specifically say what me and my group says. Brotonamobay (talk) 17:28, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template:Rquote modifcation and protection

Your modification of Template:Rquote removed my edit and now the template is protected. My edit (incorrectly shown here, by the way) was:

http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3ARquote&action=historysubmit&diff=1794044&oldid=1888273

My edit added the option to give the 3rd and 4th parameters as named parameters instead, which is necessary if a URL in the 3rd parameter contains an equal sign. --Bernhard Fastenrath 17:32, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not sure why you'd need named parameters to overcome that. You can name numbered parameters. For instance, you can use {{rquote|1=blah|2=blah|3=blah|4=blah}}. – Adrignola talk 18:38, 1 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I forgot that you can list numbered parameters with their number. Thank you. --Bernhard Fastenrath 11:40, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Another Help

Hi,

I'm back for a help. pls compare these 2 pages

Here,

Wikijunior = කණිෂ්ඨ_විකි
Alphabet = හෝඩිය
A = අ

It seems something missing. We have the new name space called "කණිෂ්ඨ_විකි". But When we dig into one of the article pages (like Alphabet/A) it should show < Wikijunior:Alphabet section in top of page. But it doesn't work in ours. What do you think? Do we need any mapping Wikijunior & කණිෂ්ඨ_විකි(Sinhala name-space). Thanks! බිඟුවා (talk) 07:19, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I got it. :) I'll take necessary actions. --බිඟුවා (talk) 14:37, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Atlas

Hello! As you saw, I made an atlas. How may I update this page with my atlas? Thanks! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 12:12, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Greetings. It appears that your book is already shown at Subject:Astronomy. If you add "?purge" at the end of the address or choose the gadget in Special:Preferences to add a purge link to your buttons at the top, it should show up for you. I did put the contents at the root of the book per Wikibooks:Manual of Style. I know there are some old books that don't comply, but I'm working on correcting those over time too. Thank you for your contributions! – Adrignola talk 12:16, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok now it is visible. I tried to purge using ctrl+r, now I'll install the tabs as well as I did on en.wikip and it.wikip. About formatting, I saw your changements, thank you for your helping. Bye! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 12:19, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Usurpation

Dear Adrignola, I'm Lucas, sysop on italian Wikipedia and editor on many other Wikimedia's projects, included en.wiki, en.wikinews and en.wikiquote (with more than 30'000 total edits). I would like to take my username here too. I often add images, fix links, and fight inter-wiki spams. The user Lucas here has just 4 edits, 3 in 2005 and one in 2006 and no one in NS1. Could you please change the name to another one and reassign it? Thanks in advance. In case of doubts please leave me a line on my italian discussion page too, thanks! ;) --Lucas2 (talk) 12:20, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Done. You probably already know you can unify at Special:MergeAccount. – Adrignola talk 12:25, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Atlas II

Hi, the wiki version of the atlas is almost completed. Do you have any suggestion concerning formatting, quality, etc? Thank you! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 08:59, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Instead of adding the category with [[Category:Blah]] which sorts all subpages by the same first letter of the book, please use {{BookCat}}, which will sort subpages by the first letter of the subpage name and not the first letter of the book. Also, I changed Template:Observing the Sky from 30°S to add that category automatically for any pages it's on. – Adrignola talk 12:44, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I'll keep in mind for the future. Thank you for your helping! Ah, in the main page there is a version to check (there is a banner, on it.x we don't use this system). After that, what can I do? --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 12:58, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't see any other problems. You're free to decide where you want to go from here. – Adrignola talk 13:03, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
that's good. May I look for the good/featured books? This atlas was developed mainly for the printed version, so "wikiformattation" of this atlas can be hard. Bye! --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 13:09, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
If you're asking whether you should try to get it featured, it would seem to me, in my own opinion, that the amount of content in the book would need to be expanded further. However, you are free to post at Wikibooks:Featured books/Nominations if you so desire. – Adrignola talk 15:05, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Uhmmm I will not do it, so. This atlas IMHO doesn't require more contents because I conceived it as an atlas, not a book, so the maps are the core of this work. And of course there are many maps there, 2+24+8. Thank you for your helping, again, because this project has many differences with it.wikibooks. --Roberto Segnali all'Indiano 15:27, 10 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

RFP for RR

Don't you think we have sufficient consensus on making User:Recent Runes an admin? I hate to see things like this drag out. I would close the discussion myself, except that I made the nomination. --Jomegat (talk) 00:16, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay, since you asked. People've complained about not waiting a week after the last comment to close an RFD, which can be reversed, as compared to an adminship, which can't. But since it's universal support it should be all right to close it sooner. – Adrignola talk 00:57, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm. If we followed that guideline when we have unanimous support, it would mean that every supporting voice would delay implementation. I figure that one week without dissent sure ought to be sufficient! Thanks for executing! --Jomegat (talk) 01:48, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Printing

Hi, I used PediaPress to print my book. I like the look of it overall, EXCEPT, where I have a section like this:

Oracle and DB2, Comparison and Compatibility/Storage Model/Physical Storage/Oracle

PediaPress prints the whole string. I'd like to at least suppress outputting the entire book name in each section header, and preferably be able to edit this to something more readable and well formatted overall.

How do I do that? Thx --Scifipete (talk) 20:23, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

You can see how chapters can be created for a PDF/printed book and how titles can be customized via the corrections I've made to User:Scifipete/Collections/Oracle and DB2 Comparison and Compatibility. Load the printed PDF again and you'll see the difference. – Adrignola talk 20:37, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Fast response, just what I needed - you guys are good --Scifipete (talk) 22:04, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I just uploaded a graphic that I want to use on the cover of the book. I can't see it when I try to select images from PediaPress - is there a time delay? Is there a way that I can explicitly state which image I want (rather than selecting it from an out of date list of my contributions)? Thx --Scifipete (talk) 22:21, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The images shown are those used in the book itself. You want to put the cover image on the title page of the book. Size it and float it to the right of the contents. Then it will appear in the list and make the book look better. – Adrignola talk 23:57, 11 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Index. I notice that there is an index generated at the back of the book. It is very sparse (less than one page), and contains some weirdo entries (i.e. a reference to None on page 91). How is the index generated? How can I influence it's contents? If I'm asking noob questions that are covered in a FAQ / HowTo doc, could you point me to that? Thx --Scifipete (talk) 13:02, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I do not have much experience with the PediaPress system. I do not know how you could influence the index. I don't particularly make much use of print versions or PediaPress. I usually like to create collections just for the PDF generation rather than the creation of printed books. – Adrignola talk 17:33, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

File does the same thing

Hi, I used [[Image:.. to put an image on my cover, and you changed it to [[File:.., saying 'file does the same thing'. I'm OK with the edit, can you give me a guideline on when I should use Image vs. File, because every other picture in the book is referenced with Image, and this is the only one you changed. Thx --Scifipete (talk) 14:35, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Image" is deprecated in favor of "File", as you can include images, PDFs, sound files, video files, and more in your books. You mustn't let your creativity by stifled by the subconscious limitations imposed by "Image"! In all seriousness, though, they do in fact do the same thing and are interchangeable. It's worthwhile to use "File" for new pages just to keep in mind the possibilities, but it's not worth it to go back through all the old ones and change "Image" to "File". – Adrignola talk 14:41, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thx for the quick response. Any limits to my creativity (subconscious or otherwise) are something I can ill afford :-) --Scifipete (talk) 17:07, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

CK12 High School Trigonometry

Thanks for your note to me on Trigonometry Plan. I did subsequently download the ck12.org book from their site, all 85.2Mb, and am pleased/relieved that there are sufficiently large differences to the Trigonometry book and the plans for it. It will be good to have both.JamesCrook (talk) 21:09, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll do my best to help. --Stepheng3 (talk) 20:16, 14 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Everything you've done so far has been excellent. Blender 3D: Noob to Pro is quite a book to try to take on. – Adrignola talk 19:07, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

mysql print version

Please fix the print version wrt the language section: MySQL/Print_version#The_language

It is updated. – Adrignola talk 17:32, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

But check the result: the Language subsections are now considered top-level sections and are messing the numbering. Beuc (talk) 19:54, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

The automatic contents does not show up when printing, so it should not be an issue. – Adrignola talk 23:43, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Of course it is an issue, the headings presentation is not the same and will confuse the readers. Please fix it correctly. Beuc (talk) 18:14, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Every transclusion on a print version page uses a first level heading. That's what each one on that page is using. I've notoc'ed the page so that it properly displays what the reader will see when the page is printed. I feel nothing further is necessary. – Adrignola talk 18:54, 18 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Bot

What do you think of this edit? Methinks it be a bot, and for some reason, I think I've seen a spate of these in the past. But my memory is not what it used to be. If I am correct, we will probably see a rash of these in the next few days. I have not blocked the ip, but I prolly should have. --Jomegat (talk) 11:16, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't remember seeing any recently, but I found information at http://www.janhvizdak.com/doorstxt6-spam.php suggesting it is in fact automated. So you are correct, but this time we're ready. I've deployed an edit filter that will stop it in its tracks. Fighting automation with automation, fire with fire. – Adrignola talk 12:39, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm all for that! Thanks! --Jomegat (talk) 13:23, 20 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

WJ page configurations

Can you suggest a feasible way to produce a list of unreconfigured pages in any given namespace? --Pi zero (talk) 14:05, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I wish I could. At this point it'd only be feasible with a toolserver/database query. I don't like that Special:ConfiguredPages doesn't put the pages in alphabetical order either. It's definitely a limitation. Ideally, we could set default stability settings per namespace. The developer of the extension was asking Darklama if we really needed stability settings. I think it was having to do with a concern that it would cause performance problems with pending changes at Wikipedia. Well, if we could set per namespace, we wouldn't have to set per-page, and that would not only avoid the issue that prompted you to ask this question, but it would also increase performance for Wikipedia. – Adrignola talk 14:10, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I hope this helps, I went ahead and generated a list of all configured wikijunior pages (see User:Thenub314/WJC) and all wikijunior pages (see User:Thenub314/WJA) and ran a diff, cleaned up the output (removed configured redirects etc.) The resulting list, is at User:Thenub314/WJD. Consider this list my apology for not being more helpful when it was actually time to configure them, maybe I can be a little useful now. Would it be helpful to have a bot that did this? Thenub314 (talk) 17:44, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. Looks like Pi zero took care of the last of them. – Adrignola talk 22:28, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
If configurations were by namespace, in order to cover templates for WJ we'd have to configure the entire template space that way. Hm. Templates being the special creatures they are —pretty much all higher-than-average impact— I wouldn't have a problem with that. --Pi zero (talk) 00:00, 22 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Table of Contents from SPM book

Hi there Adrignola, you recently removed a Table of Contents which I added to the front page of the "SPM" wikibook. It's a very long page without it. I was wondering why you removed it? The URL of the change is http://en.wikibooks.org/w/index.php?title=SPM&diff=1952318&oldid=1951721 . Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterz1 (talkcontribs) 19:20, 24 October 2010

Maybe you might consider having chapters for the book, with contents for those chapters themselves on a page away from the main contents, with the main contents as the summary. I've done something like that with Foundations of Education and Instructional Assessment. You have the chapter contents listed on the main contents, and then each chapter has its own contents. There is also an expanded table of contents linked from the main page with all pages listed (quite a few for that book, too). If you really would like the table of contents, feel free to add it back. However, as you say, it is a long page and it seemed to me that the table of contents just made it longer and it was odd having a table of contents for your table of contents. Consider having a summary table of contents on the main page. It's definitely something I've encountered more than once with my physical textbooks. – Adrignola talk 22:09, 24 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
