The 2017 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) rookie draft was an event that allowed teams to draft players from the amateur ranks. The league determines the drafting order based on the performance of the member teams from the 2016–17 season, with the worst team picking first. The San Miguel Beermen selected first overall after a trade with Kia Picanto.
The event was held at the Midtown Atrium, Robinsons Place Manila on October 29, 2017.[1]
Draft order
The draft order is determined based from the overall performance of the teams from the previous season. The Philippine Cup final ranking comprises 40% of the points, while the rankings of the Commissioner's and Governors' Cups are 30% each.

Controversy involving Kia's first round pick
On October 27, 2017, PBA Commisioner Chito Narvasa approved the trade that sent Kia Picanto's first round pick (first overall), which is used to draft Christian Standhardinger, in exchange of Ronald Tubid, Jay-R Reyes, Rashawn McCarthy and San Miguel's 2019 first round draft, with minimal revisions from the original trade proposal that originally involving Keith Agovida, Reyes, McCarthy and a San Miguel draft pick.[2] The trade proposal already earned the ire of the fans as well as Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, team owner of the Alaska Aces,[3] and Dioceldo Sy, team owner of the Blackwater Elite[4], since Kia is trading their opportunity to pick a potential starter in exchange of role players.
In defense of approving the controversial Kia-San Miguel trade, Narvasa cited that TNT KaTropa also tried to made a deal with Kia's first round pick. Narvasa also stated that TNT's manager Magnum Membrere submitted draft application papers on behalf of Standhardinger, even if Standhardinger already submitted his own papers three weeks before the September 4 draft application deadline for Fil-foreign applicants.[5]
TNT management then released a statement hours after the 2017 draft concluded, blasting Narvasa for being biased and questioned his credibility as the league's commissioner. TNT also clarified that the actions done by Magnum Membrere when submitting Standhardinger's draft application papers were done as the representative of Gilas Pilipinas.[6][7]

- a On October 27, 2017, San Miguel acquired a 2017 first round pick from Kia in exchange for Rashawn McCarthy, Ronald Tubid, Jay-R Reyes and a 2019 first round pick.[8]
- b On March 14, 2015, Alaska and GlobalPort swapped their 2017 first round picks when the Aces traded Gabby Espinas in exchange for Nonoy Baclao.[9]
- c On September 11, 2017, Phoenix acquired Justin Chua and a 2017 first round pick from Meralco in exchange for Ranidel de Ocampo.[10]
- d On May 6, 2017, GlobalPort acquired Jonathan Grey and Meralco's 2017 second round pick, which was originally from Kia (Mahindra; see note G), in exchange for Garvo Lanete, who was acquired from NLEX in an earlier trade for J.R. Quiñahan. GlobalPort then sent Larry Fonacier, Meralco's pick (from Kia [Mahindra]), and their 2019 second round pick to NLEX in another subsequent trade in exchange for Sean Anthony and Bradwyn Guinto. TNT re-acquired its 2017 first round pick along with Anthony Semerad by trading Fonacier.[11] Previously, on September 22, 2014, TNT ceded its 2017 pick to GlobalPort in a trade that also involved NLEX.[12]
- e On February 3, 2015, Barako Bull (Phoenix) acquired Justin Chua and San Miguel's 2017 first round pick in exchange for Dorian Peña who went to Barangay Ginebra along with a 2015 second round pick, while San Miguel sent Jay-R Reyes to Ginebra via Barako Bull.[13]

- i On March 28, 2017, Blackwater re-acquired its 2017 second round pick from NLEX in exchange for Rabeh Al-Hussaini, who was earlier sent from Meralco in exchange for Blackwater's 2018 second round pick.[16] Previously, on September 12, 2014, Blackwater traded that 2017 pick to NLEX along with Juneric Baloria and a 2016 second round pick in a trade that also involved Meralco.[17]

- p On November 3, 2013, GlobalPort acquired the draft rights to third round pick LA Revilla and second round picks for 2016 and 2017 from Ginebra in exchange for its 2014 first round pick.[24]
