Corruption in Brunei

Political corruption in Brunei has been fought however it is not fully eradicated, with corrupt officials being called out by Bruneian politicians.[1]

Overview

Brunei did not have data in the 2023 Corruption Index by Transparency International. However, in the 2020 Corruption Index it scored 60/100, on a scale of 0 (“highly corrupt”) to 100 (“very clean”) ranking it 35th out of the 180 countries surveyed.[2]

Anti-corruption efforts

According to the 2023 Freedom in the World report, conducted by Freedom House Brunei was given 3/4 in the section stating “Are safeguards against official corruption strong and effective?”.[3].

Cases of corruption

In 2020, two former judges were convicted for embezzlement of over millions of dollars from government controlled accounts.[4] [3]
