Self-Portrait is a 2022 documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Joële Walinga. It premiered at the 2022 South by Southwest Film Festival,[1] won the Special Jury Prize for National Features at the Montreal International Documentary Film Festival in 2022,[2] and was released on Mubi in the US and Canada on March 20, 2023.[3]

Synopsis

Made entirely of unlocked surveillance footage from around the globe, director Joële Walinga takes viewers on an abstract journey through the seasons, observing humanity through the things it has chosen chosen to point its cameras at.[4]

Reception

Self-Portrait was described as "pure cinema" by the head of film at South by Southwest Janet Pierson in Realscreen[5] ahead of its world premiere. The film screened to mixed reviews, with some critics finding it aimless and boring, and others describing it as "mesmerizing,"[6] "a remarkable achievement."[7][8] The film was included as a New York Times pick of international films to stream in spring 2024.[9]

Awards and nominations

Self-Portrait won the Special Jury Prize for National Features in 2022 at the Montreal International Documentary Festival and was nominated for the 2022 SXSW Adam Yauch Hörnblowér Award.[10]

Film festivals

Self-Portrait had its World Premiere in March 2022 at the South by Southwest Film Festival in the Visions section.[1] The film screened at festivals and programs including Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival,[11] Prismatic Ground,[12] the Montreal International Documentary Festival, and MDFF Selects[13] among others.
