Droners is a French animated series that premiered on October 19, 2020. The series is produced by Cyber Group Studios, La Chouette Compagnie and Supamonks Studio, with the participation of TF1, WDR ARD and The Walt Disney Company France, in association with Sofitvcine 6, Sofitvcine 7 and Pictanovo.

Plot

Droners takes place in the world or ocean planet called TerrAqua – which is 95% covered by water with islands (from atolls to archipelagos) as the 5% land. Team Tiki – Corto, Mouse, Enki, and Oro – need to win the Whale Cup, the most intense drone racing competition of all time. They'll compete against other teenage teams from all over TerrAqua, with most flying their G.E.N.I.E.-powered drones through dangerous territory and avoiding even more dangerous creatures. But failure isn't an option for Team Tiki: the fate of their home island, Nuï, relies on their victory!

Characters

Main

Team Tiki

• Corto Heilani is the 13-year-old female main character and Tikis' pilot. She's hardheaded, confident, and a talented pilot who would do anything to save their team's home island, Nuï. She is loyal and generous, sometimes do things that cause her trouble just so she can help her friends, even if they are her adversaries. However, she can be impulsive and sometimes does or says things without considering the consequences. She is also very competitive but is willing to give up winning a race to do the right thing. She really likes oromos as food. She has a crush on Sun in season 1, and during season 2, Sun grows distant and Corto warms up to Manta. While she competed to save her island in season 1, in season 2, she enters the Rotor Punch to win access to the Rust Queen's treasure chest, so Wyatt Whale can use Aquae Crystals to power his latest project, the Polar Shield, to stop the polar ices from melting, thus saving more islands from the rising waters.
• Mouse Ruto is the 10-year-old mechanix for the Tikis. She is also the daughter of the Shorescrubber Ruto Clan leader, Big Moe, and she has an older brother, Vago. Mouse became the Tikis mecanix because her brother had scared off all potential Shorescrubber teammates and Corto was the only one not to be scared of him. Mouse is knowledgeable about Shorescrubber culture and is very defensive of her fellow Shorescrubbers, such as the Pirates. Mouse also frequently tries to be the voice of reason whenever Corto gets any ideas that could get them in trouble.
• Enki is the 13-year-old enginerd for the Tikis. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about nature and wildlife, frequently taking inspiration from different animals to modify Maroro for different races, but has difficulty understanding relationships with other people. He has a crush on Flora.
• Oro is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Tikis and powers their drone Maroro. He is later revealed to be an Aquae, which allows him to survive underwater while regular G.E.N.I.Es dissolve upon contact and give him a stronger form. However, he had lost his memories before meeting the Tikis. During season 2, Maroro is modified to take advantage of Oro's new form to make the drone less agile but much faster, called Mega Aqua Mode.

WhaleCorp

• Wyatt Whale is the owner and founder of WhaleCorp, a tech manufacturing company that creates drones and uses/creates G.E.N.I.E.s to power them. He's also the drone racing competition's financer and promises the pilot of the winning team will become his new apprentice. His headquarters is on Whale Island, where season 1 takes place. In season 2, with the help of the Tikis, Whale seeks to ask a former friend of his, Scarlet, the Rust Queen, to provide enough Aquae crystals to power the Polar Shield and help stop the rising sea levels. He is unsuccessful, however, forcing the Tikis to compete in the Rotor Punch to get them. While Scarlet is not thrilled, she allows him and Neptune to act as commentators for the races of the Rotor Punch.
• Neptune is the G.E.N.I.E. for Wyatt Whale. Like Oro, Neptune is immune to water because she is also an Aquae. Neptune will usually take charge when Wyatt Whale is away. Neptune is stricter than Wyatt and thus the droners usually take precautions so she won't find out whatever they are scheming behind her back. In season 1, Neptune was annoyed every time the library's windows were broken, a usual occurrence. While more serious than Wyatt, she is not above doing silly things once in a while, such as accepting strange race conditions to get unbreakable glass for the library.

Team Pirate

• Shark is a Shorescrubber and the pilot for the Pirates. He was raised on Paroa by his Mami Kiki and even made a shady deal to protect her sanctuary from being destroyed. He was Paroa's best courier before this incident. He ends up befriending the Tikis in season 1 and, along with the Bees, he and his team were on Nuï to help Wyatt Whale install a barrier to protect the island from the rising waters at the start of season 2. They accompanied him to Tortuga and entered the qualifying round of the Rotor Punch. However, they would be eliminated and they would open a spare parts store on Tortuga.
• Max is a Shorescrubber and the enginerd for the Pirates. During the Whale Cup, she would occasionally be the team's pilot, mostly when racing at Paroa.
• Ed is a Shorescrubber and the mechanix for the Pirates.
• Patch is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Pirates and powers their drone Claw.

Team Starfish

• Deejay is the pilot for the Starfishes. He is a D.J. and cares more about his popularity than racing.
• Debbie is the mechanix/enginerd for the Starfishes. She is very enthusiastic, but hints she wants more recognition within the team. In season 2, she left the Starfishes and joined Manta's new team, the Pack, as both an additional enignerd/mechanix and White Tiger's social media manager.
• Shiny is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Starfishes and powers their drone Aquablaster. She is self-centred and vain, and like Deejay, she cares more about popularity than winning.

The Tao Twins

• Sun is the pilot for the Tao Twins who develops a crush on Corto. He's blind, but the red gem on his forehead allows him to link to Lotus and see through his G.E.N.I.E.'s eyes. Sun seems to know martial arts and used it to defend Wyatt Whale and Corto in season 1's final episode. In season 2, he grows distant from Corto due to the dire situation his island is in, but he agrees that Wyatt Whale's idea to save all Terraqua is needed.
• Monk is the mechanix/enginerd for the Tao Twins. Though they are close and he loves his brother, Monk sometimes feels overshadowed by his brother. Just like Sun, he knows martial arts. He also teases his brother and Corto about their crush on each other. He apparently trained Lotus when they got him.
• Lotus is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Tao Twins and powers their drone Wushu. Lotus is older than most G.E.N.I.E.s. He is wise and considerate. If the bond between Lotus and the twins is jeopardized, the connection can be lost and render him unable to see for Sun.

Team Bee

• Flora is the pilot for the Bees. She has a crush on Enki. Her island thrives on beekeeping, but climate change has caused the bees to be unable to return to their hives, necessitating the assistance of beekeeping drones to help them. She participates in Whale Cup to impress Wyatt Whale with her repurposed beekeeping drone in the hope he can build more. In season 2, with her team and the Pirates, she and her team were helping Wyatt Whale on Nuï when they learned about his Polar Shield. The Bees failed to qualify for the Rotor Punch, but remained on Tortuga.
• Fuzz is the enginerd for the Bees. He is supportive of Flora and Enki's relationship, but this does not stop him from teasing Flora about it. In season 2, he helps Wyatt Whale with his drone, Moby, so he can compete with Scarlet, Lavinia and Corto and he ends up pretty exhausted as a result of fixing the old-generation drone.
• Buzz is the mechanix for the Bees. He is supportive of Flora and Enki's relationship, but this does not stop him from teasing Flora about it. In season 2, he helps Wyatt Whale with his drone, Moby, so he can compete with Scarlet, Lavinia and Corto and he ends up pretty exhausted as a result of fixing the old-generation drone.
• Jelly is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Bees and powers their drone Bumblebee, which is a repurposed beeekeeking drone.

Team Siren

• Mina is the pilot for the Sirens. She can be mean and vain, but she has to fight for her place in Maelstrom since she is not actually part of the upper echelon of high society. In season 2, it is revealed that her family has been searching for an old relic of Maelstrom that was lost near Tortuga for generations, with some from her own island believing it never existed in the first place. She strikes up an odd friendship with Enki when he is the only one to really get intrigued by the story and willing to help her.
• Victoria is the enginerd for the Sirens. She is from a high society family and is happy with her role in the team, however, this is not how her mother, Lavinia, likes it.
• Laurel is the mechanix for the Sirens.
• Nemo is the G.E.N.I.E. for the Sirens and powers their drone Nautilus. He has a nasty temper.

Teach Tech

• Gavinda Teach is the owner and founder of Teach Tech, a tech manufacturing company that creates drones which are powered by nucleum, an element that is toxic to the environment. She is Adam and Hannah's employer. She mainly asks them to spy on WhaleCorp and steal G.E.N.I.E.s to study so she can destroy her competitor.

The Cold Kings

• Manta is the pilot for the Cold Kings as Polaris Academy's representative. Their drone, named Sub-Zero, is provided by Teach Tech. He is aggressive and competitive. He wants to become Wyatt Whale's apprentice so he can convince him to build war drones as he thinks G.E.N.I.E.s are useless. He tends to enjoy freezing things over. His spare time is spent playing video games. Due to their allegiance to Teach Tech, they tend to strike alliances with the Mirages. In season 2, Manta dissolved the Cold Kings and started a new team named the Pack, with Shino and Debbie, and a new drone, Jaws. He has a successful pit fighting career under the name of White Tiger, but enters the Rotor Punch to defeat his former superior and bully, Pavel. His alliance with Hannah remains strong as the droners discover during a course royale. He is less mean and actually has friendly interactions with the Tikis, and especially Corto who he develops a slight crush on, though they are still competitive with each other.
• Shino is the enginerd/mechanix for the Cold Kings. He also represents Polaris Academy in the drone racing competition. He is more sensible than Manta and often tries to be the voice of reason to him. While unhappy with Manta's tendencies, he dislikes Pavel even more, warning Corto about Pavel's dangerousness after she tried to stand up for Manta and sending Manta Pavel's plans allowing him to stop the sabotage of a race and allowing the Tikis to win a fair race, thus sending Pavel back to Polaris.
• Pavel is Manta's previous superior at Polaris Academy. He would temporarily replace Manta as the Cold Kings' pilot but would be sent back after losing to the Tikis. He bullied Manta in the academy and the latter could not say anything due to the strict hierarchy of Polaris. The Tikis, Manta and Shino dislike him, but Manta and Shino are forced to go along with whatever he says, until they see an opportunity to get rid of him, by disabling his bombs during the race. In season 2, Pavel returns as the pilot of a new team called the Blizzard Bosses to compete in the Rotor Punch with his drone Gungnir. He treats his teammate, Cold, badly. He is happy to finally be able to attack drones contrary to Whale Cup where it was forbidden.

Team Mirage

• Hannah is the pilot for the Mirages and is the younger sister of Adam. Their drone, called Fatamorgana, is provided by Teach Tech. She and her brother are working directly for Gavinda Teach to help her uncover to secrets of G.E.N.I.E.s so she can destroy WhaleCorp. However, her hypercompetitiveness and pride often get in the way of their plans and she would rather win races. Contrary to her brother, she does not bother with a nice facade. She returns in season 2 as pilot of a new team called the Falcons to represent her island, the Sun Empire, in the Rotor Punch.
• Adam is the mechanix/enginerd for the Mirages and is Hannah's older brother. He is more willing to follow Gavinda Teach's orders than his sister, though this is mostly out of fear of defying Gavinda. He acts nicer to lower the vigilance of his opponents. In season 2, he is revealed to be in hiding and working for Pavel under the pseudonym Cold due to Gavinda Teach's actions and thinking he won't be accepted anymore.

Tortuga

• Scarlett "the Rust Queen" is the strict but fair leader of the Zealots, a Shorescrubber clan that made their home in and around the colossal Aquae Turtle Titan, Bedawang. She was previously a pilot and actually still participates in underground races under the false identity of the Aquae Knight. She was involved with Wyatt Whale when she was younger, but their relationship soured after he refused to help her by making war drones. This is why she refuses to give him the Aqua crystals he needs for the Polar Shield. However, she does accept the Tikis volunteering to win them in the Rotor Punch and Wyatt taking the role of commentator for the races. She warms up to him as time passes and the droners actually take note that they are happier when they prepare some sort of surprise for the racing teams, like the labyrinth. She eventually warms up to Corto in private, though it does not stop her from punishing her when she gets into trouble. She is also not above using her status to get what she wants, such as when she orders a race to be centred on taking a picture of a mysterious creature not many thought real or when she decides the teams were to find an old relic so she could add it to her treasure, ignoring the fact one of the team considered it a national treasure to their home. She can fight with the relic she always yields.
• Basuki is an Aquae who is loyal to Scarlet. He was sent to stop Antaboga and struck an alliance with Scarlet. He is needed for Scarlet to keep control of two of the three control centers of the Turtle Titan, the throne room and the treasure vault. If Antaboga took control of either one, he would be able to use it against the Terraes by taking control of the automatic drones of Tortuga.

Team Zealot

• Ifa is the pilot of the Zealot, Saatchi's younger brother and the Rust Queen's grandson. He flies the drone Squeele. He wants to make his grandmother proud and sometimes thinks he is failing at it which leads him to make life-threatening choices. While he already disliked Corto, as she frequently teased him for his size, her talents being recognized by his grandmother just made him jealous and even more competitive whenever she was involved. As the chosen pilot of the Zealot clan in the Rotor Punch, Ifa is trusted with investigations and is well-loved by the inhabitants.
• Saatchi is the enginerd of the Zealots. She is Ifa's older sister and Scarlett's granddaughter. She is more stoic than her brother and usually tries to reason or calm him down. She is protective of her younger brother.
• Baba is the mechanix of the Zealot. He is very old and only speaks in an old Shorescrubber language dialect which sounds like gibberish to most. He once lost his drone saving Scarlet.

Team Falcon

• Hannah returns in season 2 as the pilot of the Falcons with her own G.E.N.I.E., Kami, which was given to her by Wyatt Whale when she returned to the Sun Empire after season 1. She works for the Sun Empress. She is now on friendly terms with Corto but they still tend to be very competitive with each other, most to their respective teams' annoyance.
• Hilal is the enginerd of the Falcons. He tries to reason with Hannah but mostly puts pressure on her.
• Lila is the mechanix of the Falcons. She is among the youngest participants of the Rotor Punch. She strikes up a friendship with Mouse.
• Kami is the very young G.E.N.I.E of the Falcons who powers their drone Horus. Kami appeared in season 1 after Adam and Hannah stole him from WhaleCorp, but he escaped when one of the Tikis' attempts to make modifications to their drone caused a power surge in the hive. But his playfulness eventually led to him bonding with Hannah, and later Oro, with the latter even acting like somewhat of an older brother to him during the Rotor Punch. However, Kami's playfulness can lead to him getting distracted during races.

Team Plankton

• Lemanja is the pilot of the Planktons. She is actually an Aquae in a Terrasuit, an android body that can mimic the appearance of a Terrae. Her team lost their ship and their leader around Tortuga years ago. With their ship locked in the Rust Queen's treasure vault, the Planktons cannot go back home to the Aquae cities in the deep sea. Lemanja is creative, talkative and can think outside the box.
• Scylla is the mechanix/enginerd of the Planktons. He is actually an Aquae in a Terrasuit, an android body that can mimic the appearance of a Terrae. His team lost their ship and their leader around Tortuga years ago. With their ship locked in the Rust Queen's treasure vault, the Planktons cannot go back home to the Aquae cities in the deep sea.
• Luska is the G.E.N.I.E. of the Planktons who powers their drone Platypulse. He is actually an Aquae posing as a G.E.N.I.E., much like Oro, Neptune and Basuki, Terras don't question wether a G.E.N.I.E. is an Aqua or not since the latter is supposed to have gone extinct hundred years ago. His team lost their ship and their leader around Tortuga years ago. With their ship locked in the Rust Queen's treasure vault, the Planktons cannot go back home to the Aquae cities in the deep sea. Luska is calm and nonchalant.

Other

• Big Moe is Mouse's father and the leader of the Ruto Clan. He was once a mecanix in his youth like Mouse, but gave it up when he became Chief.
• Vago is Mouse's older brother and Big Moe's son. He loves his sister and Buzzball, and is very supportive of Corto.
• Loopi is a champion Buzzball player hailing from Nuï, but left it to pursue her dream. Corto admires her a lot and she was Vago's rival on the island.
• Gato and Emilia Heilani are Corto's parents. They have a grocery store on Nuï where Corto used to make drone deliveries. Emilia is a former champion Buzzball player.
• Kass Krane is a shopowner from Paroa and a recurring antagonist. He returns in season 2, though he has to hide due to his actions during season 1's finale.
• Lavinia is Victoria's mother. She was a pilot and wished for her daughter to be one, no matter her thoughts on the matter, going as far as pushing Mina out of that role. She returns in season 2 and reveals she, along with Wyatt Whale and Scarlet, the Rust Queen, were known as the Boomers in their youth, named as such because all their races would end up in explosions.
• Jeroboam is an old Aquae living in the Pagurd titan close to Paroa and Whale Island.
• Otaqua is the chef and owner of the Pit Stop, a popular restaurant in Tortoga where many of the teams often hang out. He was a participant in the Rotor Punch's final qualification race, but he was eliminated partially due to the Tikis.
• Antaboga is an Aqua general who wishes to continue to war against the Terraes and attempts to gain control of the Bedawang Titan to do it. He lives in a forbidden area of the Titan due to its intense cold and controls an Aquae knight suit he uses for combat and to patrol his territory. He will also consider any Aquae not willing to exterminate all Terras as a traitor.

After a race, the Rust Queen compliments Corto, which pleases the young girl but irritates Ifa. During an official dinner, Corto's words trigger an argument between Lavinia, Wyatt Whale and the Rust Queen, which ends up with a race; the three older pilots against each other and one younger pilot: Corto. Oro accidentally angers the Planktons and they cause Maroro to crash in the frozen area of Tortuga. Even if the Rust Queen forbade them from going there, the Tikis would not abandon Oro, and the Planktons would tag along.

Enki's curiosity is triggered by Mina's explanation about a lost relic of Maelstrom. However, he accidentally catches the interest of the Rust Queen in the relic so that she can add it to her treasure. The Tikis will have to find a way to fix this mess without creating too many waves.

For the next race, the Rust Queen announces it will be a game of hide-and-seek between two teams, the predators and the prey. Corto is not thrilled at being a prey, but she is even less happy to be teamed up with the Planktons. However, Lemanja's ideas might be what they need to win this game.
