Daniel S. Razón (Daniel "Kuya" Razon) is a television and radio host in the Philippines.[1]

Broadcast Career

From 1987 until 1988, Daniel Razon started as a FM disc jockey at KWKY and DWST . Then he shifted to television first as newscaster on PTV4’s Pangunahing Balita and Balita Ala-Una, and host of the public-affairs programs Ang Pandayan ni Mang Pandoy and Dakila Ka Pinoy (1993 to 1997). He was also the executive producer and director of the public-affairs program of IBC-13, Ikaw ang Humatol (1994-1997). [2]

From 1997 to 2003, Daniel moved to another TV station, ABS-CBN and became the host/newscaster of numerous TV shows such as Hoy, Gising (Hey! Wake Up!),Pulso, Aksyon, and Balita. Soon, he was seen worldwide via ANC (ABS-CBN’s sister station) as newscaster/anchorman for Dateline News (1998 to 2000) and as program host of Kumusta Ka, Bayan on The Filipino Channel (TFC). During those years he was also an anchor for the TV show Gising Pilipinas (1997-2003) and Usapang de Campanilla (2000 to 2003) over dzMM. [2]

In 2003 Daniel moved to rival network GMA-7 where he became one of the hosts of Unang Hirit and anchor of Unang Balita, the show’s news segment. He also co-anchored the primetime GMA news SAKSI/Frontpage. He left GMA in 2005. [1]

In 2006 he became the chairman and the chief operating officer of the Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International, Inc. (BMPI), which operates UNTV-37 and is self-titled “Your Public Service Channel.” [2]

Daniel, through his morning talk show, Good Morning Kuya) started many public service projects such as free medical/dental check-ups and medicines for the indigent (conducted in cooperation with the Philippine Movie Press Club, National Press Club, MOWELFUND and EMPRESS). He is currently constructing a free school for tertiary students (in Apalit). [2] [3]

Controversy

On February 22, 2008, Apalit Municipal officials led by Mayor Oscar Tetangco Jr. led the closure of at least four buildings inside the Members Church of God International compound in Barangay Sampaloc, Apalit, Pampanga. The buildings include a chapel, museum and two residential houses, which were constructed without building permits, municipal officials said. Previously, the Apalit Municipal council passed Resolution No. 15 requesting the Apalit mayor to enforce pertinent national and local status. The resolution further stated that, through reports, that the MCGI was violating these statutes.[4]

Aside from the buildings constructed without permits, the MCGI also failed to pay real property taxes for the years 2006 and 2007. A letter was sent to Eliseo Soriano stating that under the current law, the municipality had the power to sell the properties to pay the taxes. MCGI representatives asked for the time to settle the issues but these fell on deaf ears.[5]

These recent issues were criticized by Daniel Razon, the Vice-Presiding Minister of MCGI, on his daily morning TV show "Good Morning Kuya" aired over UNTV 37. He charged that the decisions of the Municipal Government were due to outside influences and that they were against the ADD (MCGI). This prompted the Apalit Municipal Government to declare Razon a "persona non grata". The Municipal Council approved recently Resolution 28 series of 2008 declaring Razon as undesirable person in the town. The resolution further state that "Razon's pronouncement in the said TV program has misinformed and misled the public and is meant to malign the wisdom of its officials and put them in a bad light". Although the Persona non Grata is still imposed upon Razon, he can still travel to Apalit.[6]
