EVGA Corporation is an American computer hardware company that produces motherboards, gaming laptops, power supplies, All-In-One Liquid Coolers, computer cases, and gaming mice. Founded on April 13, 1999,[1] its headquarters are in Brea, California. EVGA also produced Nvidia-GPU-based video cards[2] until 2022.[3][4]

Products

EVGA products include motherboards, power supply units, and related accessories. EVGA initially made graphics cards, dating back to the RIVA TNT2 in 1999.[5] Some of their graphics card models included the SC, SSC, Classified, Kingpin (Stylized K|NGP|N) and FTW editions (as well as special KO editions in the past).[6] Other products, such as specialized VGA coolers and VGA water blocks, were also available from EVGA. [7][better source needed] However, in September 2022 the company ended their relationship with Nvidia and thus stopped manufacturing graphics cards.[8]

Initially, its motherboards were limited to NVIDIA reference designs, and expanded to non-reference designs based on NVIDIA chipsets until NVIDIA exited from the motherboard market around 2009.[9] EVGA motherboards have been based on Intel chipsets since then, starting with the announcement of the "X58 SLI" in November 2008, a motherboard supporting 3-way SLI.[10] In March 2009 EVGA released the "X58 Classified" (E759) that increased the PCI Express (PCIe) capabilities with both more physical slots and adding an NVIDIA NF200 bridging chip that increases the electronic PCIe lanes available (the E760 Classified does not have the NF200 chip), as well as other overclocking features.[11]

In September 2009, EVGA released a motherboard (XL-ATX form factor) that allows up to four GPUs to run in a 4-way SLI configuration. The first graphics processing unit to support 4-way SLI was the EVGA GTX 285 Classified; more recent GPUs like the GTX 980 also support 4-way SLI. The company released a dual-socket motherboard based on the Intel 5520 chipset with overclocking features. Named Classified SR-2, this motherboard supports dual Socket LGA 1366 Xeon-based Intel CPUs and 4-way SLI. It was the first HPTX form factor motherboard.[12]

In August 2010, EVGA released the Classified SR-2 power supply with 1200 watts of power at 6 +12 volts.[13]

In May 2011, EVGA entered the CPU air cooler market with the introduction of the Super clock CPU cooler.

In November 2013, EVGA released its first tablet computer, the EVGA Tegra Note 7, in the United States. It is a 7-inch Android tablet powered by a Tegra 4 processor.[14]

In May 2016, EVGA released its first gaming laptop called the EVGA SC17.[15][16][17]

In June 2021, EVGA announced its first AMD-based motherboards starting with the X570 Dark (A579), which was released in September.[18] Later that year, EVGA also released the X570 FTW (A577).[19]

Exit from GPU business

On September 16, 2022, EVGA announced that it would be exiting the GPU business and terminating their partnership with Nvidia.[5] At the time of the announcement, GPU sales accounted for 78% of EVGA's gross revenue.[20] EVGA's CEO, Andrew Han, did not express the company having interest in becoming an add-in board partner for other GPU vendors, such as AMD or Intel, nor did he have plans to sell the company or retire.[21] Han also stated that job losses caused by leaving the GPU business will be minimal. EVGA says it will continue to sell through its RTX 30-series stock through the end of 2022, and also keep additional stock on-hand to honor its warranty commitments through RMA requests. Han said the move happened because he wanted to spend more time with his family and felt that the way Nvidia as a company conducts its business is not worth it when graphics cards have a small profit margin compared to some of the other products that EVGA makes, including power supplies.[22] Nvidia sells its own GPUs (called Founders Edition) for the same or lower cost than competing add-in partner graphics cards, undercutting companies like EVGA and making it hard to compete in the market.

Customer support

As of January 1, 2009, EVGA agreed to honor warranties in the Asia Pacific region.[23]

Products purchased since July 1, 2011, are automatically covered by EVGA's 'Global Warranty Policy', which stipulates a minimum warranty period of 3 years for all products regardless of region or method of purchase. The warranty coverage is transferable between owners and product registration is optional. Warranty starts when the item is sold from an official re-seller to anybody else. If somebody buys from an unofficial reseller, warranty will be less than 3 years. Product can even come with zero warranty.[24]

On August 24, 2018, EVGA altered its warranty requirements for products purchased after May 25, 2018. A proof of purchase must be included for warranty purposes, even if within the manufacturer warranty period. An additional request from EVGA to secondhand owners is to prove that the product was bought from the original owner. It is still unknown how this change will affect the financials of the company.[citation needed]

EVGA offers a program whereby users of selected graphics cards purchased from certain vendors may upgrade their GPUs to the more advanced models at a discount equivalent to the cost of the original card.[25]
