Hydrocarbon that has some double bond between carbon atoms. The simpliest alkene is ethene, which is also knows as ethylene:

Alkenes are stable compounds, but are more reactive than alkanes. Some of their reactions are vinyl polymerization and addition, for example addition of gaseous chlorine.
