Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra popularly known as BIT, Mesra is a college of engineering and related subjects, located in Mesra, near Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, India. It was established in 1955 by Mr. B M Birla. It is a "Deemed University" under Sec. 3 of the Indian U.G.C. act, 1986. BIT sits in the heart of the 'powerhouse region' of India. Located in a highly industrial place with many heavy engineering companies helps in developing the outlook of the students enrolled in the college. Ranchi is home of engineering consultants Mecon & SAIL-CET. Industries like Usha Martin, SAIL - research & Development center for iron & steel, HEC, INDAL resides in the Ranchi region which is also the capital of Jharkhand. Other industrial cities like Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad are within 200 km from this place.

Path to progress

BIT houses PARAM super computer to cater to the super computing needs. BIT was recently Wifi enabled. With excellent infrastructure and serene environment it presents an ideal environment for studies, grooming leadership skills and overall presonality development.

Extension centres

The college has extension centres in India and abroad at Ranchi, Allahabad, Kolkata, Noida, Jaipur and Chennai.

Annual festivals

  • Unnayan - Biennial Technical meet.
  • TechnIEEk - BIT's annual monsoon session technical extravaganza.

Student community

Students from all walks of life and from various places from Indian convene at this place for the undergraduate and graduate studies. About 3% of the students are from Nepal, Bangladesh, SriLanka, Middle East and Africa. Student community is largely know for the actively participating in the cultural activities and community service along with the studies.

Hostels

Hostel 1,2,3,4,5,5a,5b 6,7 are the men's hostel of BIT. On an average about 300 students reside in each of these hostels. Hostel 8, and 9 are the women's hostel. Another hostel for men is nearly completed and is expected to be ready in February 2006.Hostel 4 is also known as the NRI hostel.This hostel is allocated to only those who had come from outside india or are foreigners.

Clubs

Many clubs in BIT work to enrich the creativity among the students.Each club is distinguished and has a purpose. The clubs are guided by a professor and have a student body.

Placement

The placement cell of BIT works to invite leading companies to visit for campus placement. The college has an excellent placement record.

The placement team is headed by the T&P officer currently Mr. B.B.Pant and he has a team which comprises not only of the office staff but also a student placement co-ordinators team to assist the entire placement process run as smoothly as possible.A unique contribution by the placement team at BIT Mesra is the alumuni mentorship programme through which the batch undergoing placement is guided by the alumuni of the college already working in the corporate world to understand the needs of the corporate world and to make a correct decision before actually taking ajob offer
