Backend as a service (BaaS, pronounced bæs or bɑs) is a type of software as a service which focuses preliminary on backend i.e. providing the server-side infrastructure for desktop, web and mobile applications. This space has also been called "Mobile Middleware" and "Context Brokers." In October 2012, MarketWatch reported the global BaaS market is expected to grow 104% by 2017 to $7.7 billion.[1]

BaaS usually provide: APIs, SDKs and code samples. Their main purpose is to let application developers and publishers focus on front end development saving time and money by using existent cloud hosted backend infrastructure which they provide.

The term BaaS has became especially popular with the growth of cloud services for mobile apps such as:

BaaS platforms usually monetize by providing a free tier of API calls and traffic per month after which the account is charged a subscription fee.
