Lorenc Antoni, born in Skopje on September 23, 1909, was a Kosovo Albanian composer, conductor, and ethnomusicologist. He died in Pristina on October 21, 1991.

Early years

Antoni was raised catholic in the Albanian catholic community of Skopje, and was reportedly childhood friends with Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu (Mother Teresa). [1] [2] [3] [4]. Since a child, he was active in various musical ensembles of the Albanians. He studied music privately in Skopje and Belgrade. After completing his education at the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje, he returned to Ferizaj.

Music School Teacher

In 1941 he started to teach music in Ferizaj, Prizren, and Prishtina. In 1948 Antoni established in Prizren one of the Josip Slavenski music schools of former Yougoslavia for beginners and intermediate music performers. He led and conducted the choir of the school. He also conducted the artists of the cultural society "Agimi" and the Symphony Orchestra of the city of Prizren.

Contributions to the Albanian folklore

In the study of folklore, Lorenc Antoni wrote a seven volumes work on Albanian folk music from Kosovo, Macedonia, the Montenegro and South Morava. He also composed music, mainly vocal compositions. [5] [6] [7] [8]. Antoni also composed around 200 musical pieces. [9]

According to Prof. Engjëll Berisha, L. Anthony is currently working on the general Albanian musical idioms as outlined by Lorenc Antoni.
