The International Freeski Film Festival (IF3) is a Film Festival dedicated to freeskiing movies. The IF3 was created in 2007 by JF DuRocher, Felix Rioux and Doug Bishop and is held annually in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. [1] As its world premiere every major ski movies, IF3 is considered the Cannes film festival of Ski Movies. [2] [3] In addition to IF3 Montreal, the International Freeskiing Film Festival goes intercontinental this year with its announced expansion to Europe. IF3 Europe will be held from September 30th to October 2nd in Annecy, France. [4]
History
Festival’s origin
IF3’s mission comes from the growing need to gather all elements that compose freeski culture in one place, including cinematography, music and photography. IF3 is the biggest gathering of independent producers and directors in skiing, with people coming from over 10 countries and participation growing every year, proving what a fast growing discipline freeskiing is in sliding sports.
"IF3 and its long list of powerhouse sponsors are reflections of a sport that is the fastest rising in skiing.” – Montreal Gazette
The festival gives the opportunity to the freeskiing community to share and exchange their passion for the sport by attending film screenings and other activities. It is also an event which promotes directors and athletes alongside the general public. There is no equivalent event in the world. [5]
IF3 Team
The birth of IF3 came from a common idea shared by Félix Rioux, JF DuRocher and Doug Bishop in March of 2007. Thanks to the brands, producers and athletes from the ski industry, the first edition of IF3 took place in September of 2007. In 2009, after the third edition of the festival, Bishop left the team to concentrate on Newschoolers.com and other projects.
Nowadays, Félix and JF work together, with Rioux as the President of the festival, in charge of administration, programming and branding, while DuRocher is in charge of sales, marketing and social networking. The website and graphics are done by Cresus Design. The company runs year round in order to make the festival grow. Four months before the event, additional staff members are brought on to the project, including Charles Boileau, Philippe Benjamin, Jason Woolf, Charles Mercier, LP Sansfaçon and Jeff Schmuck.
First edition [6]
The first edition of IF3 took place on September 14th and 15th 2007 in Montreal, with the premieres of 11 professional and five amateur films at Cinema L’Imperial in Montreal. The event focused on the cream of the crop of the freeskiing film industry, but also on the strong presence of amateur filmmakers. The audience gave a warm welcome to the first edition [7].
Evolution
Every year the festival grows [8] and develops new concepts such as free outdoor screenings. The number of screenings and activities at the festival began to take more and more importance and time over the years, and as a result, the length of the festival was extended. New film categories have also been added in recent years to adapt with the development of the freeskiing world, social networks and the web. This mainly refers to the Webisode category, which first appeared at the 2010 edition of the festival, which was prompted by the success of various web edits posted by athletes and producers online. This award for Best Webisode was determined by the public after they voted for their favorite webisode series on www.newschoolers.com [9].
The success of IF3 Montreal contributed to its evolution in 2010 when Annecy, France welcomed the European version of the event. This first edition of Europe IF3 (which took place on September 30th to October 3rd, 2010) was a great success [10] and will see its second and third edition take place in 2011 and 2012.
