Sir Indur Ramphul (10 October 1931 – 2024) was a notable figure in the Mauritian banking and financial sectors. After 16 years at the Accountant General Department and the Ministry of Finance, he joined the Bank of Mauritius in 1967 as a Manager. He was subsequently promoted to Chief Manager, managing director, and finally, in June 1982, to the position of Governor of the Bank of Mauritius.[1] Additionally, he served as an alternate Governor for Mauritius at the International Monetary Fund.[2]
Ramphul has contributed significantly to the development of the banking sector in Mauritius and the modernization of the country's banking legislation. He played a pivotal role in the development of offshore banking in Mauritius and was the Chairman of the Offshore Banking Technical Committee until 1996, a body established by the Government to oversee various aspects of offshore banking, including the issuance of offshore banking licenses.[2]
Recognition
In recognition of his services to banking in Mauritius, he was knighted on 31 December 1990, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, based on the recommendation of the then Prime Minister of Mauritius.
Personal life
Ramphul was born on 10 October 1931.[3]
He pursued studies in Public Administration at the University of Exeter in the UK from 1962 to 1964 and attended Central Banking Courses at the Bank of England in 1969 and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 1976.[2]
Ramphul was proficient in both English and French, and his leisure activities include reading and swimming. He was married with two children.[2]
