Oliver Daemen (born 20 August 2002)[1] is a Dutch space tourist who flew as part of the 20 July 2021, Blue Origin NS-16 spaceflight.[2][3][4] He was 18 years old at the time.[5] He is the youngest person to travel to space as of July 2021.

Biography

Daemen was born in Oisterwijk, Netherlands.[6] He attended the Odulphuslyceum in Tilburg and obtained his high school diploma in 2020.[7] He is enrolled at Utrecht University where he is set to begin studies in physics in September 2021.[6][7] He also holds a private pilot's license.[8]

Daemen secured his seat on the New Shepard rocket through an auction, making him Blue Origin's first paying customer and the 8th person to pay for their spaceflight.[9][10] Initially a different person had actually won the bid for a seat on NS-16, but they decided to take a future flight, making Daemen's father, who had bid the next highest amount, the winner, and he in turn let Daemen become the passenger instead.[6][11][12][13] On 20 July 2021, Daemen became the youngest person to fly in space at 18, succeeding Gherman Titov's record at the age of 25 in 1961.[14][15]
