Ms. Marta Santos Pais of Portugal born in the year 1952 was appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations as Special Representative on Violence against Children in New York at the level of Assistant Secretary-General.

Prior her appointment, Ms. Marta Santos Pais serves was the Director of the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre. She began her career at UNICEF in 1997 as Director of Evaluation, Policy and Planning and Co-Chair of the United Nations Development Group Working Group on Human Rights.

From 1991 to 1997, Ms. Santos Pais was concurrently Rapporteur of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child and Vice-Chair of the Coordinating Committee on Childhood Policies of the Council of Europe.

In her country in Portugal, as a passionate of all issues pertaining to children’s rights, protection and well-being, she occupied various advisory positions on human rights and legal issues. She also held the position of Special Adviser to the “Machel Study on children affected by armed conflict as well as the United Nations Study on Violence against Children.

Ms. Marta Santos Pais wrote extensively, and she is the author of many studies and publications. She graduated from the University of Lisbon and holds a law degree.

Ms. Marta Santos Pais is married and she has two children.
