Mexico–Romania relations refers to the diplomatic relations between Mexico and Romania. Mexico has an embassy in Bucharest.[1] Romania has an embassy in Mexico City.[2]
History of diplomatic relations
The first official contact between Mexico and Romania was in April 1880 when then Prince Carol I sent a letter to President Porfirio Díaz informing him of Romania's independence from the Ottoman Empire by the Treaty of Berlin in 1878.[3]
Both nations established official diplomatic relations on 20 July 1935, however, diplomatic relations were severed by Mexico on 24 December 1941 when Romania joined the axis powers during World War II. Diplomatic relations were re-established on 20 March 1973 by both nations and soon afterwards embassies were opened in both nations capitals respectively.[4] In September 1989, Mexico closed its embassy in Bucharest due to budget cuts. However, the embassy was re-opened in 1995.[5]
In July 2000, President Emil Constantinescu was the first Romanian leader to visit Mexcio and met with former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo.[6] In March 2002, President Ion Iliescu visited Mexico and held talks with then President Vicente Fox while attending a UN conference in Monterrey.[7] Both nations have worked together on several important issues and have supported each other diplomatically. In 1997, Mexico signed a Free Trade Agreement with the European Union (which includes Romania since it joined the EU in 2007).
Both nations are members of the United Nations.
