Speaker of Toronto City Council

The Speaker of Toronto City Council and Deputy Speaker of Toronto City Council will become the presiding officers at the sitting of Toronto City Council, Canada, beginning December 1, 2006. The two full time positions were recommended by the Council appointed a three-member volunteer advisory panel and their report The City We Want - the Government We Need in 2005. The two positions will be elected by city council and replace the Mayor of Toronto as the convenor and chair of council meetings. The mayor remains the Chief Executive Officer of the city.

The speaker will be elected to serve a four year term and can only be removed by a vote of 75% from City Council.
